Hi,
I am super new at 40k and have zero plastic/paints/whatever. My D&D gaming group is going to start playing 40k every once in awhile and everyone is planning on building an army of around 1000 points.

The other players are going with Space Marines, Necrons, Chaos, and Tyranids so far.

Can I get advice on a decent 1000 point list that does not cost that much? Its more important that its cheap ($) and fun. It being super min maxed is secondary.

I was looking at those AM Starter boxes that come with a tank, but I am not sure if they are a good value or not.

Hopefully this is the correct place to put this post, if not have mercy.

Thank you!!

Hi daggertx, and welcome to a clever and horribly expensive hobby :-D I'm not entirely sure if this is the right subforum to ask, but I'll give some general advice.

Start with buying stuff from ebay and simliar. Models that are badly painted are the cheapest, you can strip the pain, or simply spray them over and pratice your painting on them. (AM recently got a new codex, so they might be a bit more rare/expensive on ebay these weeks.)

In my very humble opinion:

Build an army out of what you can get your hands on cheap. 1000p could be about 50 infantry models with some special weapons and three or four standard Leman Russ, one that should be a tank commander. (That is a good default tank that is both durable and dangerous.)

Next step, after you have played a couple of games, is to add some Chimera transports and more special weapons (plasma!), such as command squads, veterans and/or militarum tempestus. Then later add more infantry and something spectacular and potentially more tricky, such as flyers, artillery and hellhounds.

The best way to get a feeling for what is useful is to read this subforum. Find AM-lists that are followed by discussions. There you can often find interesting arguments for various units and themes and such.

Also, check out the 40k-strategy forum, there is a looong thread about the new AM-codex there. Read it slowly now, and again after you have played a couple of games.

hint: The BattleScribe Roster Editor makes it easy to play around with different lists to learn what your models can be.

Best of luck!

First of all: AM is one of the pricier armies out there, just because you need far more models. You will notice that a space marine player getting the start collecting box gets about double the points in models as a AM player.

Still, AM is a great choice, as the army is fun to play, and can be played in various ways (full infantry, full vehicle, flyer-heavy, stormtroopers attacking from the sky...).

If you're interested in starting AM, the start collecting box is a great way. Actually, I would advise to get the box 3 times! This way you could do something like:

Tank Commander
Leman Russ Battletank
Heavy Bolter Sponsons

3 x Infantry Squads
Autocannon
Grenade Launcher

2x Leman Russ Battle Tank
Heavy Bolter Sponsons

This will put you at 753 Points, and leave you with 3 commissars and 6 infantrymen (who could make a great special weapons team with flamers).

That army would have a lot of bodies already, and IMHO you can never have enough russes (I have got 13 :3 ) !

From that point on you can expand on what you like to fill your 1k points.

Hope that helps

Imperial guard is probably the most expensive army in 40k. With money being an issue my advice is to find an age of sigmar army to kit bash with cadians, which will probably require you to give your soul to the chaos gods. Kits like skaven plague monks are $35/20 models instead of $29/10. A Cadian box comes with a lot of extra bits that can be passed down to the age of sigmar minis for conversions. HWS boxes can make a 3 mortar team HWS and 3 lascannon teams for your infantry squads. Learn to scrounge bits like bolt guns from marine players for your sergeants.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Ebay is good, finding someone who is just getting out of the hobby on craigslist or through your local game store is even better.

In terms of competitiveness combined with cheapness, I'd go with Valhallans. This is about 1000 points, and one detachment, either battalion or the heavy support one whose name I forget:

Tank commander
Tank commander
Commissar
Conscripts
Conscripts
Leman Russ or more conscripts or infantry
Leman Russ
Leman Russ

Hide behind your conscripts, and when they (the conscripts) inevitably all die, send in the next wave and stick them in front of your tanks again. It's a simple tactic, but will play pretty well pretty quickly, and will take a while to refine.
Then, when you're bored with that tactic, you can experiment with the dagger relic and/or Tallarn tactics, to avoid your opponents rather than hiding behind conscripts.

Good on you choosing the Guard! Glory and extra rations awaits for you to claim.

Like everyone said ebay will be your friend. Fully assembled sqauds that is possibly painted will be selling cheaper than the box from GW. Obviously some rarer models are expensive but that goes with every other army aswell.

I personally like to play deepstriking shocktroopers behind enemy lines (or where objectives is needed to be secured/ lines reinforced) and blasting away with plasmaguns. Here's what I play most of the time. Equipment varies quite a bit between games but plasma is your friend. Mostly play with what I have amd I like convert stuff quite a bit. Getting a second Russ next month.

Commissar Yarrick
Company Commander
Tempestor Prime

Infantry squad
2-3 Militarum Tempestus squads

Militarum Tempestus Command Squad
Officer of Fleet
Master of Ordanence

Hellhound
Armored sentinel

Heavy weapons team
Leman Russ

0-2 Valkyries

Chimera

1-2 Vindicare Assasins

Assasins are great addition to your army to take out those pesky psykers and characters.
