I apologize if this is a little more strightforward, however I was recently involved in a game where a guy had 3 Earthshaker batteries with no crew and was just laying the wood on me.

It has been my understanding (I've never really been digging) that artillery pieces need someone manning the gun in order to fire it.

Can someone confirm for me either way?

Earthshaker Platforms are artillery, but do not require crew. The requirement for crew is listed on the individual unit, there is no overarching requirement for artillery to have crew.

However, if they were Earthshaker Carriage Batteries from page 16, then they need crew.

Also keep in mind that these batteries haven't received errata yet, so are still ap -2.
