Anyone tried it?
I was wondering if it was any fun.

I enjoy it. It doesn't have quite the depth as some systems, but it is enjoyable. It is pretty easy to set up. It can be competitive, but is still pretty much a beer and pretzels kind of game in my mind. One expansion gives rules to create your own survivors and another has campaign rules. But I haven't tried either of those yet.

I like it. It is very solo friendly which helps me out. It is also easy enough and fun enough I can get my daughter to play.

Simple and clean rules, with just enough tactical depth to actually make a good competitive game. I'm setting up some "competitive" scenarios/errata right now, and with minimal work you can get to some very akin to X-wing, with quick-playing rounds, but players usually feeling like they had to win with skilled play, and not just at the list-building level.

Also, pretty cheap to keep up with even if you do feel compelled to buy everything.

It's fun.

Good points: Rules are simple, but it has just enough depth to make the games interesting and not just a dice fest. There is constantly rising tension. The minis paint up nicely. Each zombie is unique.

Bad points: some of the components are, erm, sub-standard (the rulers in two different products are different sizes, and the spinner for keeping track of that tension moves by itself if you look at it funny). Not enough official scenarios.

I think it's worth playing if you like zombie games.

I've got a few questions myself, while there's a thread open:

I've never followed the Walking Dead comics or TV series. How badly am I going to be put out by the premade characters given that?

How nicely generic zombie apocalypse is the game with the make-your-own character expansion?

How well do the make-your-own character expansion and the solo play expansion mix?

First, the game is based on the comics rather than the show. I have never read the comics. I have only seen the pilot episode of the show.

That said, I really enjoy the mechanics of the game.

I divide the "post apoc" genre into near- and far-PA. Near-PA means some/most of the characters lived in the pre-apocalyptic society. Mantic's TWD All Out War is the best near-PA themed game I have come across. That said, it only really works if the apocalyptic scenario you want is zombie-centric.

The chargen system is very good, which was my main concern about the game.

There's only one problem - in the core and first two expansions, the scenarios are overwhelmingly solo or co-op. IMO the game does not live up to its potential outside of PvP scenarios. This is because, maneuvering the walkers into your opponent's characters is really the heart of what works about this game.

I have heard the latest expansion has more PvP scenarios but cannot confirm (don't own it yet). If that's true or you like to write your own scenarios, don't hesitate to pick up this game.

Just FYI the campaign rules in Miles Behind Us are very streamlined/robust. With every expansion so far, I have only found more and more to like about this game.

I am still trying to grow the community here where I live. So far I have only played against my wife, my son, and one friend. I have demoed the game to three other people, but not played a game with them outside of the demo. There has been no campaign or custom survivors used yet. I have read those rules and they seem pretty good, but I won't know for certain until I play with them. I am not sure if they are official or not, but Beasts of War has made available recently two different scenarios that they have used in two recent Walking Dead All Out War battle reports.

Sorry for the necrotic reply re-animating this thread but TWD is the best game I own. I've virtually frozen all hobby funds that would've gone on GW product and poured it into this system for far more bang for my buck. Why?

1) It is fun to play solo, PvP or co-operatively. The only time I've ever played co-operatively in 40K is in a doubles game, and it was still against other players.
2) Set-up, play and put away time is way quicker with a game typically going for between 30 minutes to an hour and half.
3) Each expansion intuitively adds to the rules and game experience as your survivors get better/worse during campaigns with carry over injuries, improving skills, better equipment, supplies, etc.
4) Players alternate their model activation. Each action taken feels like it has real purpose and has tactical benefit. Players have a lot of choices for actions. They are not hamstrung by a move-shoot-assault series of pre-determined choices.
5) The danger from the environment changes depending on how threats are managed. The boards are only 20" x 20" in standard games so the action is quite claustrophobic. Event cards can swing a game from "piece of cake" to "holy moley!"

In summary, do you want a game with more tactical depth than 40K? An expansion price point like X-Wing, except where all models can be made relevant and useful? Would you like some roleplay-lite characterisation like DnD? I firmly believe that Mantic have hit this out of the park. Get into it!!

Can you handle the jandal?

I agree wholeheartedly. The only thing I find missing is miniatures in the same scale and style to represent my custom made survivors. I eagerly await each new expansion. I can't wait to see what comes after the Woodbury expansion!

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Am just painting up some of the minis for this game and will have a go at playing soon.

What are people's thoughts about order of collection for the expansions, at least to begin with? I'm a fan of the comics so wanted to follow that chronological order in terms of introducing new stuff if possible.
1) The Equipment Booster (because why not have more items? I'll remove cards which are inappropriate for a certain part of the story, if they are too OTT)
2) 'Days gone Bye' - very early days for Rick & Atlanta camp
3) Prelude to Woodbury - not sure where the Governor's rise to power falls chronologically (around the same time I guess?) but like the idea of the solo set and this story.
4) Miles Behind Us - For Hershel and the green family and the events on the farm.

Does anyone have any thought on what booster packs might go well with these?

You need several of them to follow the comic scenarios in the expansion. Off the top of my head, you definitely need the Glenn and Shane ones to play a few of the scenarios in the Days Gone Bye expansion. And you need the Greene family booster for some of the Miles Behind Us scenarios.

There is no need to follow the show or the comics to like or dislike the premade characters. Each character has their own strengths, weakness, etc. in the game. Once you understand the rules and the game...you begin to see how it all fits. You really don't need to know anything about the TV show or Comic to enjoy this game.

The make your own characters are well balanced IMHO. I almost exclusively use my own characters. Making them is fun. It's like building an RPG character. You can make expensive characters, but all that does is either: reduce the number of models in your survival group OR just add more walkers to increase the difficulty.

How well do the make-your-own character expansion and the solo play expansion mix?

It works fine. In some missions, if your character is particularly powerful...just add more walkers than what is normally recommended. I will also note, some equipment cards are really powerful in some solo missions. But it's a feel thing. The more you play the better idea you have on if you've taken it "too far".

Warlord games has some plastic minis that are the same scale as TWD. They are also zombie genre. Also, Reaper has a selection of figs that can work. I use some old metal Escher models for some of my custom survivors. The juves are particularly useful as they mostly have a type of basic melee weapon and a pistol.

This place has some cool figs.

The Project Z minis by Warlord Games are not the same size or proportions to TWD miniatures. I have both games and in my opinion they do not look right next to each other. The Warlord sculpts are more realistic proportioned and are not as tall. If I had to guess I would say Warlord is true 28mm while TWD are more like heroic 30mm.

Thanks for all of the info guys but I'm wondering how the expansions work.

First, it doesn't seem like you get many zombies in the base game and it looks like the expansions only add 1 or 2 zombies. Does the game just not use that many?

Second, does it matter what order you buy the expansions in?

Third, what kind of stuff do the expansions add?

Lastly, do the little character expansions add anything or just the characters?

There are two boosters of 5 walkers each that can add to the amount of walkers. A typical competitive game starts the play area with a walker for every 15 points each player has to make their group of survivors.

In order to follow the comic story, the expansions should be purchased in the order they released. If you don't plan on playing the narrative scenarios based upon the comics, you can buy the expansions in any order.

The expansions usually add some new rules, terrain types, and event deck cards. For example the first expansion adds custom character creation. The second adds campaign rules and burning terrain/walkers. The third added some indoor fighting rules and armored walkers. While the fourth added night fighting and additional indoor fighting rules.

The character boosters will give you four additional equipment cards to use when making your group of survivors and sometimes they give you an upgraded character card of a character from another set.

That being said - I would definitely recommend the comics if you have the opportunity, they're great.

I read them years ago with borrowed copies, but have now got hold of the compendiums (they're big & expensive but you get them cheap if you shop around or are prepared to wait on Ebay).
I'm reading them fairly slowly as I paint the minis from the Mantic game and play through some of the scenarios - the narrative (and feel that you have the back story involved) - it's great fun!

Interestingly the Days Gone Bye expansion (which seems the best place to start) is sold out literally everywhere in the UK. Even the Mantic store itself doesn't have them.

Tempted instead to start with The Prelude to Woodbury for the story of Brian/The Governor as I guess chronologically that would be playing out at a similar time to the Atlanta camp, and it includes the solo play rules. Plus, guess having the extra walkers can't be a bad thing.

FYI, the Prelude to Woodbury set contains just three scenarios. It isn't really much of a campaign. I prefer to think of it as a tutorial that adds something new with each scenario.

A small warning... Don't use the Prelude to Woodbury measuring tools. They're famously incorrect, and unless fixed in a later print run, they should be thrown out.

I've been looking at this in the last week or so and have some questions:

What are the differences between the regular edition and the "Collector's Edition" and are they worthwhile? Moreso from a miniatures gamer's perspective rather than just a board gamer's one. There's a HUGE price difference between the two.

Also, is it worth getting into if you skipped the Kickstarter? There's that FOMO thing that often makes me say "feth it" and just skip any board games that I missed in the KS. Zombicide S1 being pretty much the main exception.

So first off, this is a miniatures game and NOT a board game. It has a bunch of boardgame-like components but it's not like Zombicide or some other dungeon crawler.

The Collector's Edition is the core box plus a bunch of stuff, including some convention exclusives.

I love this game and have bought a ton of stuff for it from various discount sites, almost certainly paying KS prices or, more probably, less than KS prices.

Made in au

I don't have the luxury of US discounters, so I'm looking at it with much more of a critical eye, as I'm not going to be able to find the stuff for KS prices, let alone less.

The Collector's edition box costs 3x the price of the regular one from the local place with the best prices so ideally, I'd like to find out from someone if the extra stuff is particularly useful or not.

Well the first thing it comes with is Prelude to Woodbury, which is a solo expansion. It's fine for the extra characters and walkers and item cards but hardly essential. The same can be said for the con exclusive character packs.

What is very nice is the scenery set which comes with barricades, objective markers, and some wrecked vehicles. Next up is the item card booster pack, which I'd say is pretty essential.

All said, I wouldn't start with the collector's edition. Aside from the core box, the most essential expansions are probably a walker booster, the item card booster, and Miles Behind Us (which has rules for character advancement).

After those things, I'd advise picking up the Days Gone Bye expansiom (rules for character creation) and the scenery booster although maybe you already have scenery to use in your collection.
