Maybe this is old news but it looks like the "console" release is PS4 only as there is no mention of or use of the xbox logo at all. That sucks for the xbox community.

Why is SH: deathwing so unloved, vilified ? I didn't play or read a lot about it, but it seemed like a great game, what went wrong ?

I'm finding it difficult solo. Your teammate AI isn't that good. I'm stuck on the 2nd mission.

It had a lot of promise, but released very unfinished, and overall as a massive let down. The AI is garbage, massive weapon imbalances iirc, and VERY scripted gameplay unlike the game it wanted to be (L4D).

It was also pretty buggy iirc, and the equipment unlock system was garbage (done in a moba style when it released, where you rank up then equip whatever on the fly as you want)

And now, is it better ?

I guess a bit? I mean the AI still is bad, and it's still pretty scripted iirc. The damage was done with the launch though and
I doubt it'll ever recover.

It wasn't a great game. It was pretty, but it wasn't even a good game. Another poor implementation of an easy concept.

Warning full review happenin' here!

It kinda has a Left 4 Dead vibe to it using terminators but you have to micro manage you two dead meats in single player campaign. Particularly the Apothecary who won't heal unless you say so literally to save his own life. It doles out the standard terminator weapons at a trickle but you will get all of them well before the end of the campaign. Which is fine and the weapons each have their pros and cons, but since the as mentioned AI is pretty bad you really can't take melee weapons and expect to do all that well. Funny enough you are much better off giving the assault terminator (which starts with an assault cannon and be upgraded to a plasma cannon in your command skill tree) a melee weapon to act as rear guard since most gene stealers will be behind you by the time they spawn and track you down. Despite the weapons having their pros and cons once I get the plasma cannon that is what I use for the rest of the game as the bigger nids can be a slug fest otherwise. Until then I usually stick with the storm bolter mk1 since it keeps its accuracy at long range.

The level design is labyrinthine to say the least. And that is just for the single player campaign. When it gets to special missions I believe it goes all procedural generated. Which matched the Space Hulk theme but will involve a lot of back tracking after you find a couple of dead ends. Additionaly, campaign missions are usually made up at 3 objectives in which you are informed of the next after completing the previous. I can't complain about the art direction, the devs really did a great job making the game feel 40K and inside a huge yet claustrophobic space.

The terminators look and feel like terminators for the most part. Big, lumbering deadly masses stalking the tight corridors of the hulk in a very plotting manner. There is a run action that quickly uses stamina. Depending on the difficulty is better to use to dart between kill zones or get to the next defensive position as much as it is used to just leave the genestealers behind you. I still haven't figured out how to read your health as it show an image of your terminator and the damage it has taken. Obvious red is bad, but I have also had the almost dead beeping when many areas are orange too.

The tyranids are pretty diverse given that the whole game takes place in a space hulk. You got regular genestealers, big stealers, little stealers, warrriors, psyker stealers, acid bomb stealers, prometium spitting stealers and few cult hybrids such ones with heavy stubbers or missile launchers. However, they don't have much in the way of tactics beyond swarm you or juke right, left or duck down. Given the basic story of the Dark Angels finding an old ship among the hulk, I was kinda hoping there would be some Fallen in there too. Especially since Master Belial makes mention of them. But no, just gene stealers and more gene stealers.

While the multiplayer has classes, you only play the librarian in the single player campaign. Which is fine, but doesn't really help you learn how the powers of the other classes work when you make the jump. Speaking of which, I played multiplayer for the first time today.

Half the 4 player squad was an Apothecary. Which makes sense since in this game terminator armor is about as useful as wrapping your 'asterisk' in a napkin to 'asterisk' a chain sword. Rarely have I played a game an went, I really think it would be improved by the Gears of War hiding somewhere until you can wipe the raspberry jam off your face mechanic of healing, but I think Space Hulk: Deathwing could definitely use it.

I chose the Tactical class, because when I get to play a terminator I want to shoot things with my bolter and punch things with my fists. Oddly, the classes powers don't really fit that. My 'first' power allows me to resurrect a fallen alley. Which is fairly useful you can manage to not be the first one to fall. A quick side note. It takes like 4 minutes to return to the game if you die. During that time, you get a 3rd person view anyone in your squad you want to watch with a little message saying you brought shame to the chapter by dying. That is why reviving fallen downed allies is so important. However, it takes like a minute and a half to cool down your revive which starts the mission cooling down. It isn't like the long cool down change anything. Anytime the squad lost some one to the point they couldn't continue, they would post up and wait out the timer. Which just stretches out the mission for nothing. Back to the tactical class powers. My 'second' power allows me to place a shield around an ally. I call it my quote second unquote power since it is number 2 but cools down at a third less the time than my other powers. I can't really see why it isn't my first power. My third and final power (there is a fourth I don't have it unlocked) I believe increases damage me and my squad does for a few seconds. This has a crazy long cool down of like 5-6 minutes. I am not exaggerating, it is several hundred seconds of cool down and it lasts maybe 10 seconds.

It looks like all the powers cool downs are decreased as you level up as well as perhaps by equipping certain bling to your armor. I haven't looking into that aspect too deeply yet. Which is fine and good for a game like Diablo which has like 30 to 100 different levels and 1000s of differing enemies to fight. Space Hulk has less than 20 levels and a few more than a dozen enemy types. I don't see a whole lot point to grind for experience to get said gear to make these few levels and enemy types worthwhile. And I certainly not going to spend money to speed up the process. I am going try multiplayer a few more times and play around with the different classes, but certainly don't see me collecting all of some 1000 unlockables introduced with Enhanced Edition. Given that I got one from a single 45 minute mission that my squad and I ultimately failed, I don't see me getting more than a dozen of them.

TL;DR:
Deathwing Space Hulk looks and feeling like what I imagine a squad of terminators moving though a hulk would sans the squad micro management. It is a slow, heavy first person shooter versus tyranids uncounted that are dumb as rocks. The levels themselves are a bit confusing and require a lot of back tracking for their overly long missions. There aren't really that many missions which isn't that big off an issue until you jump into multiplayer and level grinding to unlock powers and gear which appears will take way too long to get anywhere. Speaking of multiplayer, right now it seems okay in finding a squad of players for a PUG. However, given that its initial release wasn't so strong and there really isn't all that much variety in what you do in game, I can't see it continuing to have high player numbers. I hope it does and if I ever see it for 50% to 75% off, I might gift it to a few friends so we can put together a squad and tackle it together.

I agree with pretty much everything in the review above. It's alright fun, but I don't think I'm going to get a great deal of mileage out of it. The storm bolted feels painfully weak in later missions which makes me a little sad.

there is depth to MP now and the special misions adds the mutch needed variarity that the vanilla game did not have, but atleast on ps4 where i play pugs are more or less unplayable as 60% of them dont know what triangle and circle does let alone ever wants to press thouse buttons(having a tac and libby on your team and none of them res/buff just screams incompitent players) and the remaining 40% just want to speedrun never caring about bugs that attacs you from behind.

if you cant get a squad of premades on voice com for ps4, your better off solo grinding whit the 2 incredible stupid bots.
