Ireland

Ok guys here in Ireland we are on hurricane watch with Ophelia set to hit in the early hours of Monday morning. Having very little experience in this type of weather on this side of the atlantic the country is on red alert with schools and alot of public transport closed or cancelled. Have done alot today in preparetion for the coming onslaught ( water batteries candles etc ) and cleared anything from the garden and yard that might move including a 16 foot wide trampoline! what else should I prep for?

Power outage prepare to be without power at worst in the short term if lines get damaged.

Food, water. Batteries. The basic stuff you need like medication and other vital things.

Old fashioned battery radio and charged phone always handy.

Staying at home and hoping that the wifi holds out...

Looking at the weather reports Glasgow's not going to be too bad - with most of it hitting overnight. Pity that I'm meant to be going to Largs tomorrow then...

Having looked at the maps, yikes, that thing seems to be heading straight for Ireland!

I don't know much about hurricanes, but what people have said here all seems reasonable. Power outage seems likely, and of course, don't go outside if you can help it. Have a sturdy house.

I hope things'll work out.

I believe it's a cat one. Figure power out for two days max. Have water in the tub in case pressure goes for toilets. Have some food, batteries, and whiskey.

Don't you guys have like cement homes?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Edit:if it's a cat one you will be fine. Just starting a bit windy.

If it floods on your street do not play in the flood water outside. Flood water is actually really nasty.

Edit 2: per storm tracker it will be a tropical storm not a hurricane. 75 mph winds or less. Also moving fast. Holy crap moving at 38 mph. Wow. So you may get just a couple of inches of rain and some tree limbs down. You will be absolutely fine as long as the whiskey holds out.

If you have older relatives bring them to you or check on them. Tell them it will be windy but fast and they will be fine.

Mostly brick but there are a few Storms like this are really rare this side of the pond. Here in the UK we still go on about the "Great storm of 1987"http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-41366241. Good to have advice from a vet who probably gets way worse every summer though

UK is mostly bricks and morter homes.. Pretty solid buildings.
Old ones especially. New ones are still brick skins and tiled roof..

Qyite abit more mass than a wooden property the same size I'd say is safe.

Hard to tell, to be honest. Unlike you guys in America, we're not used to hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes.

We're fine when faced with invasion from the French, the Germans, or the Soviets

We've got orange/yellow sky up here as well. As an earlier poster said, it's a Martian invasion!

The Martians have never forgiven London for defeating them in the 1890s war of the worlds

Somewhere in south-central England.

Orange/brown sky in Oxford but it's gone by us now.

We might get hit by the tail end of the storm in the middle of the night.

It's all gone Sepia in old Lahndhan Tahhhhhhn.

Hope this doesn't affect my commute home. I've stopped smoking at work, and I'm gasping for a ciggie.

Other than that, not really expecting big shakes in my neck of the woods. The storm looks set to pass us by.

Luckily I'm up in the North of the country so we're not getting it as bad as other areas, but the entire city has become deserted only the pubs left populated.

I have heard some news that a few people have been killed down south though, hopefully the list doesn't grow.

As of point of writing, BBC is saying two people killed. One with a tree landing on her car and the other having an accident with a chainsaw (I have thumb scars from a chainsaw so can understand-chainsaws are like Mexican girlfriends: beautiful but utterly lethal).

Updated to three people tragically killed with another hit by a falling tree. Most of the damage seems to have hit the southeast south and west of the country. Still though you get idiots that think its a good idea to go swimming and kite surfing in the height of the storm ( kite surfers had to be rescued by the coast guard) even after numerous warnings on national TV. Talk about putting other lives into danger aswell as their own.

That's sad but what where people doing out in the storm? Why risk it?

Everyone had plenty of clear warnings to stay inside and avoid the roads. Im not victim blaming but there was a very good reason why they warned people, closed public transport and schools.

Hope it does not rise higher and people stay indoors. A few hours inconvenience is not worth dieing over.

I noticed in the US the power seemed to go down quite easily. I wondered if it was because of the 115V they had more transformers that weren't as resilient. Over here we have 240V so they tend to have less transformers but they're a lot bigger.

Obviously when winds gets bad enough a lot of power is going to go down regardless, I just remember it going down in the US even when the wind wasn't terribly bad, you'd just see all the transformers down the street popping.

I imagine they probably felt like they had good reasons to be out there. The chainsaw person said they were clearing a downed tree; one of the people in a car was in the car with elderly passengers, dunno what the backstory is but they probably felt it was important.
