Looking to put together a chaos list and ideally want to pick all the models I like and stick them all into an army. Not looking for anything competitive but would like to hark back to the day chaos were all as one.

Now have tried to do it using different detachments for anything but I find myself being taxed for too many models I don't really want to use. My question is the can I make my battalion up with the chaos keyword enabling me to choose any units from the csm, DG, TS and cd books?

For example can my list look something like this...

Ahriman
Death Guard daemon with wings
Kharn

TROOPS
Horrors
Nurglings
Bloodletters

ELITE
Berzerkers
Blightlord terminators
Plague marines
Rubric marines

FAST
Blightdrone

HEAVY

Haven't looked at points at all, realise I would miss out of bonuses as haven't gone for a full death guard detachment etc but is this legal?

I don't believe you can take a different god within the same detachment, I think you can only bring different Legions.

That is 100% wrong. You just have to share a faction Keyword, and they all do-Chaos.

From what I can gather the only thing you may lose are legion tactics. But even then if you did it right you could still be OK. Take patrol detachments / auxiliary detachment and it all works but you don't get command points. Mix them all in to get command points but you will probably lose legion tactics.

You absolutely can make a mixed chaos detachments.

You wou;d lose legion traits, objective secured on your troops, and access to the codex stratagems (unless you take another pure legion detachment to unlock them)

While you can put all of this into one Detachment legally, with some kerjiggering you can get them all into their own detachments and get the benefits:

Death Guard Patrol Detachment:

Death Guard Daemon Prince with Wings (Compulsory)
Plague Marines (Compulsory)
Blightlord Terminators
Bloat Drone
Plagueburst Crawler

World Eaters Patrol Detachment:

Kharn (Compulsory)
Khorne Berserkers (Compulsory. They become Troops in a World Eater detachment due to the FAQ)
Maulerfiend

Mixed Chaos Battalion Detachment:

Ahriman (Compulsory)
Rubric Marines
Horrors (Compulsory)
Bloodletters (Compulsory)
Nurglings (Compulsory)

Death Guard Superheavy Auxillary Detachment

You can lump the thousand sons in with the Daemons since they don't have any legion rules yet (I think, didn't look too close to their index) and get some cheap CPs from a Battalion. Alternatively, put the daemons away and bring some reinforcement points and just summon them mid-game. You got at least one character from each alignment anyways.

Yep that would work. I wish it wasn't as hard to get access to the stuff by jumping through all of these hoops but once you know how to do it chaos becomes really awesome.

So essentially either of these lists could work. Not sure how good they are mind!
