Ok,
most likely there's a threat about this with a name I couldn't search but..

If I use the cloud of flies stratagem which makes a infantry unit such as plague marines not to be targeted with shooting for a turn. Can the enemy instead target your alone characters instead? Hope I'm enough specific with this one. For an example I have a unit of plague marines accompanying a chaos lord and I use the stratagem on the plague marines. Chaos lord is inside the plague marines squad. Closest enemy is behind a building and closest visible enemy against from you is your plague marines and the chaos lord. Can your enemy just shoot your chaos lord now, when you used the stratagem against you. It's quite easy to move your shooty units the way they can't see the closest unit after all.

So how is it?

No, you can't target a character instead if he's not the closest unit to the firing unit, even if there are closer units which you can't shoot at. If you have a melee going on where they unit is closer to you than a character, the enemy unit in melee still counts as being closer to you even though you can't shoot at them, and you can't target a character behing that unit either.

The Plague Marines would still be able to be targetted in this example, as they are the closest VISIBLE target.

Ok, thanks for clearing it out for me.

So basically the stratagem makes your infantry unit a count as character unit for a turn. Nothing else, nothing more.

One more reason to have 1-2 empty chaos rhino's in the front line, to keep your precious characters and DP's out of harm.
