WizKids Announces New Partnership with Games Workshop

Reveals Plans to Release New Games set in the Critically Acclaimed Warhammer 40,000™ Universe

October 19, 2017 – Hillside, NJ – WizKids, the leader in high-quality pre-painted miniatures and established board games, today revealed a multi-year partnership with acclaimed fantasy miniatures company, Games Workshop. The new partnership will extend the Warhammer 40,000 universe IP across multiple categories, including, Dice Building Games™, board games and more!

“We’re thrilled to be working with Games Workshop and the Warhammer 40,000 license,” said Justin Ziran, president of WizKids. “This beloved franchise is known the world over and our partnership will allow us to create amazing products and experiences for fans everywhere.”

The multi-year deal will span numerous categories and include the most iconic Warhammer 40,000 characters and more. The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Did not expect that to happen!

I mean, WizKids and GW?

That's like when we first got Sonic games on Nintendo.

Whan I see those prepaints (and price!) I hope not

But in general this is interesting news. I think nodoby saw that coming.

I still remember how GW was strict about not letting FFG produce any kind of miniatures that could be used on table.

Sounds like a possible return to the old MB days. Reissue of classic Hero Quest anybody?

Simple fun you can just jump into, instead of all the fun of navigating a phone-book sized rulebook full of tables and tedious, ambiguous rules? Who would enjoy that?

Where the warp did this deal come from. No idea what sort of games they will come out with. 40K heroclix sounds like a terrible idea, so hopefully something else.

Maybe an airplane game using the flightpath system?

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

Wizkids is god awful, so why they would want to partner is unknown.

Clix would be terrible. Their prepaints are so bad its amusing.

Dice seems bad also. Ive played their dice games and its very meh.

Some kind of self contained non collectable board game is the only chance I could see at something being worth while.

Given my experiences with Wizkids' Star Trek Attack Wing, this is negative news, they have a very poor history when it comes to any kind of long term support for a game, breaking games with expansions and factions and general poor rules writing/implementation and further complication from poor FAQs and so on.

I get that GW is moving to them from their relationship with FFG but WK are a much less stable company and flit from one thing to another once the initial buy-in money has gone.

Would be a good way of drawing kids in with dice and cheesy pre-paints before hooking them on the real plastic crack.

Will be interesting but I really do think it was a mistake moving away from FFG and going to WizKids. FFG is like the gold standard in the gaming industry, lets just call WizKids not and leave it at that.

Though I wonder how much of the fantasy flight and gw break up was that fantasy flight was devoting all their effort to Star Wars and not very much to GW.

Maybe in the quality of their products, but FFG isn't all that great either. At the end of the day, the old FFG 40k/fantasy games they released with GW license will be better then anything wizkids will product, but FFG has huge support issues and gamer ADD also.

Just look at star wars. Its one thing to the next just to release as many products as possible even if it competes with their own products. They still have the luxury as most people buy anything because its labeled "star wars".

A high amount. Star wars = printing money. GW = meh, fans might buy but they rather spend $ on the expensive models then board games

At the point FFG got the starwars 'human' (as opposed to just spaceship) minis licence there probably wasn't much choice

even if GW had been willing to swallow FFG moving in on their tabletop field (eg Imperial Assault wargame version, rune wars, legion) and FFG had another big pot of cash to pay GWs licencing fees after they paid for the starwars licence both of which would be difficult asks

the amount of effort in terms of manpower, manufacturing etc they'd have being putting in to the starwars stuff would have left their GW stuff stagnating

better for both sides to make a clean break and then that left gw looking for a new board/card/dice game partner and it looks like they're taking the same approach as they have with the video games more smaller non exclusive deals, we've already had a hook up with Ninja Division and now one with Whiz Kid, and I expect to see more in the future

TLDR is that Disney are whoring out the Star Wars license to everyone just like GW are doing with their license, thus the brand has lost most of it's interest.

Could someone post some picture examples of some wizkid games? I have never heard of them before. Collectible dice games? Like Yahtzee or something?

Really wish they had never wrecked MechWarrior like they did. Loved that game. MageKnight and Mechwarrior were my gateway into plastic crack. Still Have all my mechwarrior stuff too.

MW Clix was probably the most fun I've ever had on the tabletop out of literally any other game I've played.

Still have all my stuff too.

My gut instinct says that this will produce little of value - but will earn money for GW. Wizkids rarely puts out a quality product.

While I'm thinking this is just GW using wizkids as a printing service in exchange for letting them make 40k dice masters for two weeks, I would be so so so hyped if wizkids saw sanity and make battlefleet gothic constructible strategy game.
Imagine it, PIrates of the spanish main meets 40k.

Chances are this will be the same deal as with FFG: just games with counters and whatnot, but no actual minis.
