First two were ok.

Bulk of the episodes have been funny, but not a fan of how they just end. There's no real resolution, just a wave of the Deus Ex stick, roll credits.

Seen first two.

Think I preferred the droid based one.... the one with Hitler etc etc all just seemed a bit..... I dunno..... obvious ? Cheap ?

I'd agree with that.

What we're getting is working. Sort of. But, it's missing that certain something to really bring it all together.

I've been eagerly looking forward to this since XI was aired last year but so far it's been a real let down. Three episodes in and IMO it's easily the weakest series of the post-BtE period. The first two were alright but definitely not great, there were some positives but at least as many negatives, I thought the gladiatorial Clean-off in Siliconia in particular just didn't work at all for me. But Timewave, oh dear... This might well be the worst episode of Red Dwarf for me, for the first time ever in a new screening I found myself checking to see how long it had left till it was over, I didn't even do that for BtE.

I've heard it said that the latter part of this series is better than the first and I really hope that's the case because it really isn't looking good at the moment. Considering XI and XII were written and filmed at the same time, XII feels like it's got the "B" grade material of the two.

TimeWave was an odd one, any attempt at satire in Dwarf has always been at its best when it's a side-line to a plot or a witty one-liner, and the handful of times they've tried to do an actual satire episode, it hasn't really worked. I really liked some of the scenes and gags in the episode, but on the whole it was definitely a weaker one.

I did enjoy the first two a lot though. I do agree with Mad Doc about the sudden endings rather than the traditional closing scene to resolve all the comedic strands, but I can kind of overlook at as at this point, the draw for me isn't the stories, they're just a vehicle for the character interactions that are as hilarious now as they've ever been. No matter where the show goes, those 4 guys have still got it.

I really enjoyed Timewave.

The plot rattled along nicely, and it was nice to see The Boys From The Dwarf meet some human insanity not of their own making. I feel the series needs that injection once in a while, a bit of juxtaposition that as dysfunctional and loathesome as the Dwarfers are, they're actually kind of alright.

They're ok,

nowhere near as bad as anything with Kochanski in,

nowhere near as good as a lot of the earlier stuff

Mechocracy was a definite improvement, by far the best offering of the RDXII so far IMO. I was really quite worried after Timewave, Siliconia and Cured, but if the next two episodes are of equal quality the series might average out to be OK.

I enjoyed Cured, but Siliconia was such a wasted opportunity. I haven't seen the next two episodes but I'm hoping they're better.

M-Corps was much better, the best of the series so far in my opinion. Thought the ending was great, but I wont spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. I still think RDXII feels a bit like the runner's up scripts that didn't make the cut for XI, although that said I think M-Corps wouldn't have felt out of place in XI. Here's hoping Skipper can finish the series on a positive note.

... sooo..

yeah.

Overall not bad but not too good either.

Really did feel as if this series was largely a retread of past ideas/scenarios done with a slightly bigger budget/better FX but less..... less...... err... heart ? Sharpness of wit ?

Just felt I' seen most of this before and done better previously.

I'd give it maybe 1 more longer special to tie off any loose ends/give'em the happish ending and then let it all end.

I watched the last two earlier, to be honest I thought they were fantastic, especially the finale which, while admittedly driven 90% by nostalgia, was still a glorious collection of callbacks that will stand as an appropriate farewell to the show if it does turn out to be the last we see of it.

I'm not sure this series was as good as last, but I still rate it pretty highly, there was only one episode (TimeWave) I wouldn't happily watch again once the DVDs are out or it shows up on Netflix. Shame we didn't see any more of Ace Rimmer, I was hoping after we got the third Polymorph episode last year that we'd get a similar one for Ol' 'Ironballs' this time round.

Not sure I want another series, but I could go for a TV special to round things off. So long as it avoids the trap Only Fools fell into where it kept being resurrected again and again with very diminishing returns.

Last three episodes were pretty damned fine. Mechoracy in particular wouldn’t have felt out of place in the earlier series.

However, the last one plot wise would’ve worked better pre Ace Rimmer. When we, and Ironballs have seen what’s truly within him, that episode just didn’t fully work for me. I mean, how can Rimmer give up so easily having met Ace?

I was glad to see it finish with good episodes, I was really worried about the last half of this series to start off with especially following Timewave. Overall this series seemed a bit more reliant on nostalgia moments than X or XI and it still feels like these were the scripts that would have been cut if Doug Naylor had been only writing one series.

Has he though? Rimmer left to become Ace, after which he was resurrected with no knowledge of events that occurred after the Cadmium II leak. He presumably died again at some point in between the series VIII cliffhanger and Back to Earth and somehow a hologram Rimmer is back on Red Dwarf. As to which Rimmer he is...

A poster elsewhere commented that this episode's premise could have been used to resolve VIII's cliffhanger.

I believe Doug Naylor has said that he's already started writing for XIII, however that could well be a case of him jumping the gun. So long as any further series are at least as good as this one (Minus Timewave), I'd like to see that personally. The Dave era series have all been pretty good, although this one was IMO the weakest.

It’s odd.

As a whole, I agree this series wasn’t as consistently good as X and XI

But, I do think it’s high points were superior, with just the first two episodes dragging its ‘grade point average’ down.

I think Doug Naylor has found his feet again. And so long as the next series is a labour of love, it’ll all be fine.

I read in the Metro yesterday that the next series is already in production.

I'll hold off on the celebrations personally. If true, that's great news IMO but I'm surprised that the official Red Dwarf site doesn't mention it. AFAIK it hasn't even been commissioned yet. Do you have a link for the article? A quick google search hasn't found it.

Just as a quick follow up to this, I found this link via another forum: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2017-11-16/red-dwarf-poised-to-return-for-another-series-on-dave/ and this dates from the same time as notprop's reference.

However, it is worth pointing out that going by this the next series is not in production. It hasn't even been commissioned yet and for that matter at the time of the article things had only gotten as far as Doug Naylor spending some weeks writing scripts at that point.

From the article:

He (Doug Naylor) told RadioTimes.com that he has been writing scripts for the next run for weeks, adding that “the chances are high to certain” of a series 13 commission.

Bearing in mind there was 4 years between Series X and XI, 3 years between IX and X and the movie got further than this...

Celebrations at this stage are distinctly premature.

Bit of a necro, but for some good news! The Boys are back!

Red Dwarf XIII will begin shooting in early 2019!

The official Red Dwarf site has made it pretty clear that in spite of what articles like this claim in their headline, nothing's officially confirmed yet (And to be completely fair it even says as much in the main body of the article) until either GNP, Baby Cow or UK-TV make the announcement, whatever cast members may say. It wouldn't be the first time that there have been false starts for Red Dwarf in the Dave era.

Still nothing officially confirmed yet but apparently Norman Lovett has said he'll be back as Holly for Red Dwarf XIII. Hope he gets better material than he had in VIII...
