You can use this Stratagem at the end of your Movement phase. Select a DEATH GUARD INFANTRY unit. One model in the unit regains D3 lost wounds. If there are no wounded models in the unit, a single model in the unit that was slain earlier in the battle is returned to the unit with a single wound remaining.

So, let's assume I have a unit of plague marines that has suffered at least one casualty:

a) can I use this to place the new marine 2" in front of the unit, effectively shortening charge distance by 3" and extending the shooting range of all plague marines by 3"?
b) can I put the reborn marine within 1" of an enemy unit?

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

At a glance, yes - place the model anywhere within normal coherency of the unit.

Your shooting range does not increase - a model's range is a model's range. The models in the unit out of range would still be out of range. Could you bump a single model's range by placing it out front? Yes.

Charging is always measured by one model getting into close combat. Remember the other models still only move the distance rolled, so if the distance + pile-in aren't enough, some may still miss out on the combat.

Well it wouldn't extend the shooting range of the whole unit, ranged weapons measure from each individual when targeting an enemy.

I can't find anything that says you can't place them within 1" of an enemy, or that new models must be placed in coherency with their parent unit.

Imagine Poxwalkers spawning an extra twenty zombies and conga lining up the board. As far as I can tell its perfectly legal.

There is a faq that covered this. It has to be within 2" of a model that was in play at the start of that phase, and not within 1" if an eneny.
