I haven't played WH (or any tabletop games for that matter) for a lot of years... The last time I played, 40K was still using 3rd edition rules! so it's bee an while... The last army I built and played was a Tau army, back when the first Tau codex came out but hat was right around when I was getting burned out on the whole GW hobby scene... I had tried my hand at opening a gaming/hobby store in a small community right around the same time that online retail was really taking off... so needless to say I was unprepared for the online competition and the whole experience left me a bit overloaded and I took a break from the hobby.

Long story short, I accidentally stumbled across a GW store last week and just for the hell of it decided to step inside to see what was familiar... I was re-hooked instantly. SO I bought the 8th edition rulebook and am currently going through it - so far the 8th edition rules look interesting - and I'm just trying it decide what army to build first...

Anyway, I have been told that Dakka Dakka is the best place to go for great info in everything from modeling/painting to army lists and game strategy. So here I am!

I am looking forward to re-learning my modeling and painting skills and getting my feet wet playing the new rules once I have an army built. There does seem to be a ton og good inog here so I imagine I will be doing a lot of reading and very little posting!

Hello and welcome to Dakka!

I think you'll find relearning your hobby skills is much faster and easier than learning them was. Hope you'll find an army you like, have fun building, painting and playing!

Thanks! That's what I'm hoping! I haven't touched a paintbrush or glue bottle in at least 15 years... I was always an big IG fan/player so my first instinct was to gravitate toward that (especially now that all the heavy tanks are no long Forge world only models!) but I may start off with one of the Xenos armies depending on how quickly the new codexes come out and what their rules look like.

Well, IG and Eldar are both solid options for a new army. Very favorable rules this edition.

The transition from 3rd to 8th shouldn't be too hard. The basic mechanics are similar, the nuanced details are not too hard to pick up on.

Good luck!

thanks! I'll take a closer look at the new Eldar Codex . as for the new rules, I think I am still mourning the loss of the blast and flamer templates!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Do you still have your Tau? I'd love to see the 3rd edition Tau army in all its glory again. Welcome back!

Welcome to Dakka, and welcome back to the hobby. I see you used to play IG and like super heavy tanks. I was wondering as soon as I saw your user name if you had named yourself after the super heavy tank by the same name, or if it was a coincidence.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Sorry for the delay in replying, I got caught up with some work stuff... yuck! lol

I eBay'd the Tau force way back, along with all of my GW books and models. My Tau force wasn't huge. If I recall correctly. I think it was just a little over 1000 points when I got out of the hobby.

And yes, my user name is not a coincidence!. How can you not love super heavy tanks! I am actually rather excited about being able to finally being able to build these tanks now without having to spend a fortune on Forge World resin models! I may never get a chance to use them in battle, but they will be fun to build .

But first things first.. I need to finish getting a grasp on the new rules and codex and start planing my army; then get my shaky hands used to painting again!

Welcome back to the hobby and welcome to Dakka Dakka!

Going to your local store is probably best, but I suggest looking at the army lists section here and watching some Battle Reports on Youtube. You can see what works, and what you like.
It's worked out pretty well for me personally.

Good luck on your galaxy wide adventure!
