Hey everyone! so, i've gotten into this game recently, and am trying to put some sort of army together. Now right now my idea is for an army that does double duty; they'll be kingdoms of men in the regular game and, if I get a chance to play them as this, Thracians in the historical.

Right now i'm planning on using falxmen as beserkers in the KoM army, but i have no idea if this is a good idea or not! I also have some peltast looking fellows who I'm not sure how to use in the KoM army.

So I guess I'm just trying to figure out the best way to approach this, and looking for advice.

Using falxmen as berserkers is fine. However, as with all "glass cannon" units, you must shield them from ranged attacks until they are in charge range.

As for peltasts, assuming your Thracians are javelin armed, there is no direct equivalent, as KoM missile units are either Bowmen, Crossbowmen, and Arquebusiers. Are you and your opponents okay with proxies?

Looking through the rest of the Thracian list, all but the War Dogs, Musician, and (of course) Spartacus have KoM equivalents so that should not a problem. Indeed, your historical options are more limited than your fantasy options.

Incidentally, I bought a Macedonian Army to do double duty as Macedonians and KoM. To get around the Peltast problem, I purchased Archers and Slingers. Slingers do not have an equivalent, but 3 Troops of Archers are usually more than I run in KoW fantasy.

The peltasts might mauybe be allied units with throwing weapons (Varangur night raiders with throwing weapons or maye Herd Hunters ?)

Also depending on what units you use exactly, maybe the Varangur or Herd lists might be a better fit for your models, the Herd have a berserker-type unit (spirit walkers), spearmens, the tribal hunters can serve as slingers (use the bow rules) or peltast (throwing weapons), the beast pack for your war dogs, and the centaurs will made decent medium ancient cavalry

Only thing that is not really in theme is the army wide pathfinder.

Varangurs might also be another option (reavrs as powerful berserkers, tundra wolves as war dogs, but they do lack any unit with spear (but of course there is also the option of alling one or of using the item that give Phalanx to simulate them)

Thanks guys! I hadn't even considered the varangur or herds.

Thinking about the peltasts... I might just end up using them as spear blocks, if that works out ok with my friends. They aren't exactly ordered looking, but their weapons do look a lot like spears so i don't think there would be much confusion. That does leave me at a bit of lack of shooting right now, I think i will get some archers.

I admit that i do like the herds list just thematically though, it might be something to explore in the future

There's also nothing wrong with using your javelin-armed troops as bowmen, as long as you are clear with your opponent before hand.

We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

Thanks! I am going to try that, fortunately i think people here are pretty open.

I am trying to think in terms of war engines right now. Cannons are aboviously out, how do ballista do?

Ballista are not very poweful, but they are cheap as hell.

You won't kill much with them, but they give you a way to deliver some damage on very long range, so they are a nice way to force some opponennt to com to you, else you will be able to target his own war engines or similar ranged units.

Ballistas can also be used to softena target with a few points of damage before charging, or later in the game to try to finish a damaged ennemy. Don't expect any individual ballista to hit much, but for 60 points the occasionnal hit will be felt by your opponent, and if you take a batterry of 3 of them you should get a more reliable average of one hit per turn.

Tip : remember than height 4 units (most monsters) don't benefit from any cover from height 1, so while ballista are sometimes hard to deploy to to being direct fire units, if your opponent has a monster a ballista can target it from behing your own infantry (or even over the head of your opponent infantry) without any cover malus while behint itself out of line of sight of other height 1 ranged units

That is good to know! I think i will try to wrangle up three of them if i can, eventually.

Right now it seems like my army is coming together. I am going to play my first real non practice game soon, i hope.

I got my ballistae from Eccentric Miniatures. They're Roman scorpion sized so they're not huge but they're plastic, easy enough to assemble and inexpensive at 2 for $10. They're sized to fit in with 25mm or 28mm minis, I use mine in games of LotR and KoW.
