It's been a while Painting & Modeling...

After a year in Korea, I've decided to fall back into the hobby. While the gundams out here are pretty fun, they just aren't space marines.
I've got a second year, so I decided to grab a bunch of stuff to turn into an inquisition army, the centre of which will be a re-painted Grand Master Voldus as an Ordo Malleus inquisitor.

More is coming soon, but for the time being, all I have finished is a head - I'm quite pleased with it. When I first started painting about 3 years ago, I really struggled with doing faces, and it felt like they were really critical bits of really critical models to get right, so it was nice to kind of land on my feet in that regards.

However, if anyone wants to give me any pointers on how to up my head game further, please throw a suggestion my way!

Thanks for looking!

More Inquisition stuff - This time it's henchmen.
Though I doubt I'll do anywhere near as good a job, these were significantly inspired by the mysterious red cloaked figures in John Blanche's (of course) Black Templars painting - a source I used when I started out with my Templars a few years back.

I've been slowly converting these guys up over the past couple of weeks, and am about ready to paint them while the weather out here is still warm enough. I might add a few more purity seals and chainaxes here and there though, and I want to get some more tubes and cables on the psyker, as soon as I can find some epoxy.

That said, if anyone has suggestions for additionally things I could try modeling-wise, I'm all ears.

Cheers!

Though I'm not sure how he will figure out on the tabletop, fluff wise, this is the grizzled, fanatical leader of the unit - a low-ranking inquisitor, usually found hot on the heels of a much more capable, more ruthless member of the Inquisition

This guy is my 'sanctioned' psyker. I liked the idea of the rest of the unit being pretty hostile to his mutations, keeping him shackled and imprisoned, even in battle.

Lovely batch of models. Loads of character. The chain-axe wielding nutters are quite nice.

Thanks youwashock! I thought the axes would be an interesting touch, (as I can't raid my bits box from across the world, but I can throw money at forgeworld.) - add a bit of medieval peasant-conscript brutality to synergisze with the whole crusading-knights-in-space that the templars have going on, while adding a suggestion of heresy too.

Also, can't have imperials without chain weapons.

Been working on my inquisitor a lil' more today, so here are some wip shots. I think I've decided on Casval as a name (maybe Casval Flay? Been reading Titus Groan and the names are nearly the best part), though I've yet to hammer out the rest of his fluff fully.

As ever, cheers for looking, and if you have any C+C, lemme hear it!

Yo!

It's Sunday evening here in Korea, and yet again, I'm posting an update.

After much deliberation, I decided to have a crack at blanchitsu flames on Inquisitor Casval's cloak. I think it went pretty okay - if anyone knows a really good way of doing flames, lemme know bc I spent like a good hour just practicing drawing flames before I even picked up a brush today.

Also, I think I've finally figured out how to get semi-decent lighting for photos of in my apartment, so that's nice.

Enjoy!

I've got to try and figure out a way of tripling one of his stats.
Was thinking that maybe he secretly believed that psykers are the next evolution of humans or something appropriately zeon-y.

Greenstuff, glorious greenstuff!

Finally got my hands on some green stuff, so I can finish converting the last of my flagellants, and then it's onto painting!
spent the last few evenings working on my psyker, and I'm pretty pleased with him, though I've got a quandary for you all - do you think he looks too busy with the sign hanging off him?

I had originally planned to put something along the lines of ordo astra telepathica, some text-looking squiggles, and then over that a big red "approved" styled like rubber stamp (using micron pens) on the scroll, but now I'm not to sure.

Cool stuff! I know how hard it can be when you have that modeling itch and you're in a country with little to no hobby shops. Kudos for doing some really cool conversions.

Hey if you find stores can you add them to the store finder?

If I do, I'll post 'em. As far as I know though, nothing other than the one store already marked in Seoul, and some official GW stuff in Japan.

Just a heads up if you're planning on green-stuffing cabling, you might want to consider a tentacle maker tool. Those things are great for ribbed piping.

I like the scroll/sign on the psyker, increases the impression the rest of them don't like him, as you would never choose to have it there yourself. And looking at how well you paint it'll add character when the text is applied

From Endor to Hoth, Ripley to Spock, I'll get what you want but there's Gunna be a cost

Finished Inquisitor Casval!

In the end this was a pretty experimental mini - custom colour scheme, more freehand than I've ever tried before, and I'm mostly quite happy with the results.

I will say, in terms of molding, and how you assemble the mini, then reaching places to paint, Grand Master Voldus has to be one of the worst models I've ever built. Lovely looking, but an absolute to work with.

Thanks man, I've been flitting between projects a bit lately. Also waiting for it to get above -10 so I can spray paint again.

I've not abandoned the Inquisition for my xenos just yet. I should be putting some stuff up here shortly too. I've been tinkering away, hopefully the end results will be interesting!

Man, you're a bit of a veteran then, I've been out here just less than 18 months - like almost every other waygookin I encounter (who isn't a Russian), I'm a teacher - I'm about 45 mins from Busan and 30 from Gimhae-si, but in a bit of a podunk village. We've got a Daiso, and a local gundam shop, but there's no train station, so traveling anywhere takes nearly a day. There's also the Tamiya store in Gimhae, but that's about it as far as my modeling knowledge goes.
If you wanna impart any wisdom, I'd be glad to hear it!

(the part of me that was a NoFX fan in the Bush era loves the quip! I wish I had something equally cool to say about people in the Midlands getting agitated at the notion that there might be foreigners somewhere, and deciding that forcing the entire nation to commit financial suicide might make them go away, but really I'm just out here because it's about the most exciting thing you can do with an English degree)

I promised updates - I give you updates.
It's late here, so I won't beat around the bush too much. Here's the latest addition - an ordo Xenos abhuman lackey. As disposable as he is violent.
Tried some weird stuff out here, got a bit experimental, let me know what you think.

High praise indeed! Thanks very much guys. I thought it suited a re-make of a classic model. I've been looking at the older 40k rulesets lately, and lamenting having gotten into warhammer so late in life - I'm dreaming that the 8th ed. Inquisition codex will bring back old-school buy-a-basic-guy-and-pile-on-convoluted-upgrades-till-he's-a-terminator-psychic-monster stuff (and explosive collars for acolytes) but I'm not very optimistic.
Having spent so long honing the art of the Black Templar Initiate Marine, I'm keen to get a bit more experimental, and make characters really feel like they have some character!

I've got a few acolytes in the works, a couple of them might even be finished soon!

Just finished the first acolyte. I think I'm going to do the robes and rifles the same colour for all of them.
I also tried my hand at weathering on his axe - still testing the waters in that regard.

Another Sunday, another update!

Finished my psyker! And would ya believe it - tried another thing I ain't never tried before!
Glowing eyes! I think I did okay, though pointers would be appreciated! I think I need to have like a wider area of the thinnest first layer?

I'm not sure how well you can make it out, but I also gave him a nosebleed, on a whim. Turns out nosebleeds aren't too hard to do, and I think it fits his character a bit.
I like to think that on top of being a psyker, on top of being outcast among the rest of the flagellant dudes (not sure what to refer to them as of yet...), he's also just a bit of a hapless loser who sometimes gets nosebleeds. But on a more grimdark note, I imagine it's not uncommon for people with boiling eye sockets to sometimes also get other sinus-related problems.

This one is a bit of a marvel of plastic cannibalization - pretty much all the stuff coming out of his head, bar two kind of lazy greenstuff tubes has been hacked off of parts my skitarii bits box. I always loved that one picture of the sanctioned psyker by Paul Dainton, and was kind of putting this guy together with some of the techno-mutilation of that image in mind.

As ever, thanks for looking, and please feel free to gimme some of that sweet sweet C+C!

Haha, thanks, I'm glad it's even visible! It was surprisingly easy to do if I'm honest, which may mean I find myself struggling to not give more minis bloody noses in future...

Thanks for the feedback! Honestly this was among the biggest challenges I set myself with the flagellants, and I wasn't sure if I was ready to dive right in, given that he was only the 2nd in the box I had painted. I still really see myself as a novice, and am as a result a bit instinctively afraid of more advanced stuff like this - I'm glad you think it went well!
