It's that time of year again. Wasn't expecting Apollo to drop out so soon but that's how it goes.

The Swarm was an interesting bot. One thing I don't get is, why waste cluster bots with crappy weapons? Since they're so small, flippers and fails and other such weapons are useless for them. They should stick with spinners. If I was building a cluster bot I'd basically make them all little replicas of Carbide. So they would be a swarm of little rippy spinner bots that would hopefully tear you apart like a swarm of piranhas.

agreed all around.

One might be tempted to perhaps try and design the cluster bots with chains/similar/whatever that could clog or block up an opponents wheels/tracks etc etc ..

.. although of course that might be against the rules on reflection.

Quite looking forwards to the 10 bot melee.

Honestly prefer Angela's style of presenting, she's capable of appearing like she's actually interested and enjoying things without having to have a sly wee pisstake of the whole affair.

Last night was brilliant though, I love that the shonky circus freak robot driven by a wee lad was the one that came closest to actually bringing down Carbide - looks increasingly like the only way to beat them without hoping they make a huge mistake is to adopt a Rocky-style plan; let them wear themselves down and hope you can outlast their battery packs.

Gabriel 2 did show that have a bouncy robot that could take the hits and let the 'bots with the heavy weapons just wear themselves out.

Cluster bots - I don't know. It seems the designers/drivers haven't clocked the idea of actually attacking in unison and instead let the bigger robots pick them off one-by-one.

.. well fair play to Nuts then eh ?!

Not quite sure it's able to move and spin as they claim but it's simplicity of build is definately a strength.
Not really sure the cluster bots do a lot apart from get smacked around by the flails... ?

Still think Carbide looks the best machine overall.

Some nice looking heavy hitters in the next episode from looks of it.

2 week gap is quite annoying however.

Yep - let's here it for the daft robots - even the ones made out recycled beer kegs!

Nuts did seem to drift slowly while in 'spin mode'. If he can get it to move a bit quicker like that....

..but I think it does rely on getting a critical hit to a wheel or something in the first clash.

I was rooting for The Kegs...to be smashed to bits! Don’t bring that hippie recycling nonsense into the area!

Really happy with nuts 2. Definitely one to watch! But I felt that Tauron should have won that match.

I think that was the best Robot Wars episode EVER!

Every fight was a great fight. The 10-way was shear chaos and kudos to Nuts 2 for earning the title 'Carbide Killer' before being knock out. Maybe they can get some custom made one piece protective bars made to replace those welded multi piece girders around it's wheels....

Awesome episode. Sorry we have to wait another year for the next one.

I still think that if I could build a robot, I’d make it as a swarm of mini Carbide’s. I saw one clusterbot this series with a mini carbide type robot but the others were ineffective flippers/rammer types. It did well (damaged behemoth’s scoop) but by itself it’s not enough. On the other hand, three or more of them together...

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Would still be pretty meh IMO. The key to Carbide's success is the sheer power of any given hit with that monstrous bar, if you go with three clusterbots you cut the power of any one of them by at least two thirds and probably a lot more - remember the weight limit remains the same whether you have one robot or ten mini robots, and unless you can spend a fortune on miniaturised components you'll have to use up proportionately more space & weight in those clusterbots for the basic drive & power systems.

The most effective idea for clusterbots seemed to be Nuts' basically unarmed little wedges - so small and light that they barely impact your overall limit at all, and just use them to shove in underneath enemies and hold them still while you batter them with your proper robot's main weapon.

Honestly though the only new thing this series that seemed more ineffective than clusterbots was the various "entanglement" devices.

Episode 1
Robot Wars, World Series Episode 1 of 2

The UK's greatest robot fighters battle it out with the best teams from across the world in our bulletproof arena.

This episode features former champions Apollo, Sabretooth, Terrorhurtz and Gabriel 2 taking on a true legend of Robot Wars - the highly flammable Diotoir. Making up the Rest of the World team are TMWHK from the Netherlands, Cobra from Belgium and Rabid M8 from Portugal.

Who will reign supreme in this global battle?

Highly flammable diotoir, but is Sgt. Bash back to take advantage of that?

Come back Sergeant Bash!

Mind you, he's not exactly needed if the operator is going to drive a flammable robot over the fire hazard.

Fun little series overall.

Was a bit disappointed at how easily some of the foreign robots went down..

It's almost as if you stick something on at an odd time it won't get the same audience levels as it used to

a well worn strategy used by the BBC to kill shows they're bored with (please move east enders, casualty and holby city to the 11-12pm slot on BBC 2 and kill them too!)

Not just that, they put it up against Blue Planet for a while there. Looks like they're trying to take the mantle of Genre Executioner from Fox.

Bleugh. Every time I think my opinion of the BBC can't get any lower, they limbo right on under it.

but without these shows how will we know celebs lifelong dreams have been fulfilled even if they go out early or get beat by a popstar at the last

maybe a compromise 'Dancing with Robots', I'd happily watch One Show presenters getting dismembered or flipped by Chaos et al

As a direct result of this thread, I did some catxching up last night ... Robot Wars and Battle Bots...

Granted, I only watched an hour of "Best Of Seasons" and "Top 10s", but the US show just seemed really fething crazy compared to the BBCs? As in real destruction, substantial parts flying off, cracked safety glass on commentator's box, actual burnt out bots ...

Having said that, Warhead (UK IIRC) ... earned an ovation for the way it reared back up on its spinning head ;like some robot zombie and carried on the attack.

Love: Tombstone, Carbide, Apollo, Minotaur (what a nasty little bugger that one is!) and Warhead (for reason given).

Also saw some flying drone get swatted outta the air with a rake FFS. Actually, the flying drone had a kind of ineffectual downwards burner ... would be maybe more effective if it could drop a load of sticky (napalm-like) fuel onto a bot and then ignite it.

Have there been any really effective flamers? I saw one bot "shoot" something (dunno what) ... with no effect.

I remember watching the very first of these shows back in Germany (I think it might have been a UK show with mock German commentators?). Lame as gack back then. I seriously enjoyed it last night.
