How do do? I've played a beginner game at Gamestorm, a local gaming place, and had a good time. I played as Cryx, and am also looking at Khador-but what's a good place to start?

Is that the Game Storm in Chicagoland? We have a decent meta on the North side of Chicago as well, if you want to make the trek out one of these Thursdays. Anyway, get a couple battle box games under your belt (it interested in Khador, try it out too), and then pick up another 25 points of stuff. This usually means another warjack or two, a unit and a couple of solos. After that, I would try out different casters before growing the list to 50 or 75 points.

Gamestorm is in the Chicagoland area-hell, I might've seen you there, if you were there last Thursday.
How much is a good battle box? I likely won't be purchasing it till around Christmas (chronically broke) but it's good to know.

The Battleboxes all have an MSRP of $39.99, the actual price may vary.
Cryx is also half of the two-player starter, it includes the Cryx battlebox and a unit of Bane Warriors, along with the Cygnar side, dice, tokens and rules. If you can split it with a Cygnar player it could be an alternative. It has an MSRP of $89.99.

So I did some reading on the interwebs, and it looks like I actually might want to go with the Protectorate of Menoth.
Can I be told about that? Unbiased opinions-I don't want you to know WHY I wanted Menoth, just tell me about it.

I've played against them twice. It is my understanding that they're currently considered the weakest WM faction, at tournament level play.
They're one of 3 Major Human factions. In game, their big thing is Fire that tends to chomp through standard infantry very quickly.
Lore-wise, I believe Menoth is the main "creator god" of the humans. The power of a God depends on their ability to have devoted souls, in WMH. Menoth has determined, as an Order seeking deity, that it doesn't matter WHY [Good vs Evil] souls are devoted to him, only that they are. As such, the concept of involuntary subjugation to the cause is A-Ok in the order.
In other words, Lawful-Neutral with splashes of Lawful-Evil thrown in.
I think the models would be an absolute pain-in-the-ass to paint, compared to many other factions. I'd say they have the highest amount of ornamentation on their models.

Menoth is a very synergistic army. That is both a good and bad thing. When things go well with each other the army becomes very tough to deal with. However, when something disrupts the synergy then the army struggles. It's a fine balancing act and if you're new to the game then be aware that you'll probably take a worse beating than you would using other, more forginving, armies.
If you like the lore and/or looks of the models then it is worth the time and effort to enjoy them. Like I said you may get pummeled but when everything clicks for you you'll have a great time returning those pummellings.

There are some entertaining things that you can do with Menoth. The Choir is one of the more annoying units in the game; by themselves they do almost nothing, but can buff your jacks and make them all but untargetable at range. Having played them for a while, Malekus (the Battlebox Caster) is entertaining to play with, and while he has good synergy with his battlebox battlegroup, you may want to branch into the Hand of Judgment for sheer play value.
If you want a opinion, I particularly enjoyed the interaction between a swarm of Redeemers and Hierarch Severius.

Seconding this, learning to do things in the right order is key (even more so than other factions), the army is arguably a tad under the curve power-wise on the assumption of buffs, and if your opponent can throw a spanner into the synergy engine its hard work
