I must admit that while I like AoS, I miss the Empire. Well, one can recreate it with an Order soup, but the question is, whether it is worth it? The way AoS seems to work is that GW makes a small faction with a few different models and lets it be for an indefinite amount of time. If that is their current model and Beastclaw Raider or Kharadron Overlord will ever be expanded, what chance do Free Peoples stand? Seeing as I am definitely a player and not much of a collector, is it worth to spend money and time on an endangered faction that will probably never be expanded or "replaced" by a human faction that fits into AoS?

It's questionable if/when Freeps will be expanded. Personally I think they will but not any time soon; they got a set of allegiance abilities in GHB2 which suggests both recognition as a notable faction but also that they won't get a battletome in the next year. Also, they are really strong (tournament-level) in GHB2 so there's likely to be a decent player group for them building up over the course of the next year which GW is unlikely to simply abandon.

Ninth is a bit more optimistic then I, but imo your not going to see new models are rules for them any time soon, if ever. The poster order army is storm cast.

That said, GW is starting to realize that just nuking humans from the lore and trying to push storm cast is not really working, you might be more screen time, but I doubt new moels

To many unpainted models to count.

I think if it's an army you enjoy the look of and think you'll enjoy the game play, then get into it!
It's pretty unlikely they're going to get any new toys in terms of new units any time in the foreseeable future. Might be lucky to get some warscroll battalions.
But as a faction, they have a fairly complete model range that is somewhat on the new side (Nothing prior to 7th edition). They have some amazing looking models in the Demigryphs and Freeguild General on Griffon. So I'd say go for it, I did!

Except they were never nuked out? LIke, they weren't the main focus, at all, but they were still present in the narrative.

Sorry by nuked I mean they got shelved when sigmar came out and only now are starting to get screen time. I still don't expect any release for them.

But with that, sigmar is really about picking the army you think looks the coolest/most appeal and then making it work. With free people you can make some hillarious gun line armies or artillery positions with. I say go for it because not enough people play order that is not storm cast

I'm hoping GW will release more factions along the lines of Sylvaneth: a combination of old and new models.

Only problem is free people, most of their stuff is webstore exclusive.
Upside, like IG, they got tons of old stuff on ebay.
downside, their codpieces.

Seriously though i do think that they are worth it, as others have said. They may not get updated models for a while, but they are definitely not gone from the game or the fluff. There's lots of mention of them in the firestorm campaign box, which i thought was nice.

Side note: is it acceptable to use brettonian models as free peoples?

This actually brings up a good point; GW is supposedly trying to market more to a female audience which means freeps could be lined up for a big release due to their 'allure'

Man, that's a tough call. Up until GHB2 and that box set that had Free People/Stormcast, there hasn't' been much love at all for them. I'd say to wait until GW makes their intentions clear on what they are going to do with the faction. I wish I had done that with my Aelves....

I recall it has been said that GW are not sure what to do with free peoples yet. I recall the last thing hearing is that vincent who went to NOVA said they might make them based on realms. I think it would be neat to centre them on gods they follow. Still free peoples are a main stay.

I would always recommend an AoS original faction, they can be interesting.

I think Battletome: Free Cities would be a good way for them to go. Have all the Freeps, Devoted, Collegiate, and Ironweld in there along with a handful of Duardin & Aelf warscrolls as allied units, then create a set of flexible allegiance traits like Kharadron have with some specific cities taking the place of the specific sky port rules. This would also serve to get the Firestorm allegiance rules into a battletome rather than it being exclusive to a campaign supplement.

I think a rough Free Cities Battletome could work, as could Battletomes for each of the Realms.

Match the two together, and you can get unique forces and rules?

Not sure if others would be so keen on multi book armies of course.

Also, you can view it as a positive you're not getting new stuff:

I kind of want to start a High Elf army but people keep telling me to wait for the new book.

You, on the other hand, can get whatever models, trust they'll stay at least playable (if not good) through each rules change, and not worry about having to shift gears when a new book drops.

Agreed!

I love my old Ogre army, models such as the Butcher, Tyrant, Firebelly, Ogres, Ironguts, Maneaters, etc. So I still buy into them and they are tons of fun to play

Free peoples are actually really good right now. They have some amazing combos, and their allegience have some real teeth. It's a mostly gunline army though, so you'll have to like that. If ya do you can spit out a ton of 3 and 2 plus shots.

It's also not going anywhere as a faction. It will be a while before it's expanded, but the units in it now are going to stick around. I can't imagine them deleting free peoples as opposed to using it as a base for mortal human armies, which they don't have any of right now.

My brother is currently getting into them, they are real strong. I can say without a doubt, they have some of the best ranged in the game.

Definitely powerful guns, with a Freeguild Generals "Hold the line!" ability you get 1 to all hit and wound rolls for up to 3 "Free Peoples" units. Those units wont be able to move but if you cast that on Hand Gunners and take 20+ with all the buffs they get plus hold the line your hitting and wounding on 2s with -1 rend.

Soldiers of the Realms, yes please!

Demigryph knights backed up by keen eyed huntsmen patrolling the wilds of the life realm, spearmen companies trained in the realm of beasts to aid villages in fending off rampant monstrous beasts, death realm garrisons of silver bullet handgunners to keep the undead in line and possibly the empires of Lantic, Hydonis and the Khanate rebuilding armies with their own specialties.

God specific would be great too. Maybe a split with Freeguild and Ironweld in one book and wizards and devoted in another for that reason?

Side note: is it acceptable to use brettonian models as free peoples?

That's how I use mine for "serious" battles. Though not completely nerfed their current status as regular forces of realm kingdoms means they lost some power.

Sorry by nuked I mean they got shelved when sigmar came out and only now are starting to get screen time. I

Even then there was a picture of Devoted marching alongside Stormcasts after hiding in caves as that was the only way to really get them in such a bleak setting. Other humans were either in Azyrheim or numerous conquered kingdoms and could only give token resistance against enemies that could reinforce at will.

So much yes!

Edit: Really that's the reason I'm happy to wait for the eventual human and aelf battletomes. The longer it takes just means the more stuff it's gonna be filled with and make it a must buy.

I feel like you're being very optimistic about those battletomes.

Very possible but the amount of content, art, rules and lore in the tomes keeps getting more elaborate with each release so it's in the realm of possibility.

I'll be happy just to have Freeguild and realm specific companies. Everything after that is icing on the cake.

Fair enough. I just don't look forwards to anything from GW these days. It's a win/win as I'm either pleasantly wrong or internally smug about being right.

Huh, well I can't get behind that thinking as they've been knocking it out of park for me release after release(and good lord next year promises to be so epic) but to each his own.

If you want to play the faction then play the faction, sure if you can still field a full Brets list there's no reason to think anything comparably worse could happen to you. I'm a firm believer in playing some of the niche factions, and it looks far cooler on the table

That's the best philosophy, play what you want to play and have fun.

(And Bretonnians will always look cooler on the table. )
