Well seems I'm getting first tournament outing for my 30k models next month. 2 previous attempts failed due to timing issues. 2k points with requests to self policy to make fluffy and balanced lists avoiding spamming and indirect phosphox artirelly. Now there's no hard&fast rules so technically that's no preventation but previous tournaments at least reportedly it has worked.

Anyway I'm mulling over some lists and here's one I did with the principle of I want to field Horus. Love the model and it drew me to 30k and I'm happy with the paint job so...Hopefully not issue and I don't have spartan for point&click delivery at least.

============

HQ: Praetor(artificer armour, iron halo, digital lasers, melta bombs, paragon blade, plasma pistol)

Don't have any other HQ than PA sword+plasma pistol guy so that I'll field. Plus I like the look of the converted model with the big long sword.

Elite: Apothecarion detachement: Apotechary with artificer armour&volkite charger

Joins the larger tactical squad.

Troops:

5xJusticaerin: twin lighting claw, 2xcombi-melta&lightning claw, combi-bolter&power weapon and multi-melta&chainfist

Horus joins them and deep strikes somewhere where they hopefully can contribute. That or simply march around the field but T1 deep strike or T1 walk? What's the difference really except I can position where-ever I want. Not expecting to charge on T1 anyway.

20xtactical: Vexilla, sergeant with artificer armour, melta bomb and power fist

Melta might be bit waste with fist but then again could be helpful if I come against land raider and cant' come up with anything better to use on.

14xtactical: Sergeant with artificer armour, melta bomb and lightning claw

Figured I wanted more troops on field especially since it's supposed to be fluffy tournament. Options could be librarian(another conversion I love), dreadnought or jetbike squadron.

Heavy support:

5xheavy support troops: Lascannons

Bit of long range of lascannons. Kind of vulnerable small squadron but can't afford more(unless I drop small tac squad)

Sicaran(armoured ceramite, lascannon sponsons)

More tank busting ability so it's not all on 5 power armoured guys.

Lords of war: Horus

1999 pts.

=============

Big issue obviously going to be tanks. Running into tank heavy list and my 2 long range units will be overwhelmed. Horus&Co might have to desperately try to chase some on foot!

Phosphox batteries, spartans etc will eat this one for lunch but hoping to dodge those.

You'll struggle against an Ironwing list I think, but don't forget Horus's bombardment, also that it's twin linked. Make people pay for parking tanks close to each other.

Yeah tank heavy army comes against me and I'm going to be "oh crap".

Options for that could be swapping lascannon guys to jetbikes with multi-melta though armoured ceramite nulls that and I only have 3 but would at least be more survivable(I can hide them behind terrain and move around easier at least. Though long march helps there). Remaining points would probably go to bulk the 2nd tac squad to full(don't have anything else that really fits that 70 pts or so)

2nd option is no devastators, in 2 vindicators with laser destroyer.
Good point about bombardment.

I'm on the fence about a Laser Vindi or just regular Vindi. With PotMS, a regular Vindi is just amazing. Effective 36" range, and shaking/stunning the vehicle doesn't stop you from firing.

True that but I made my vindies into laser destroyer so I don't have regular ones available. Too bad!

Maybe one day but for now if I want to bring armoured tank busters it's the laser destroyers(2) and sicaran I have available.

That might be a better option. A 5 man lascannon squad is obvious target #1, and it will be pretty easy to wipe out. At least with 2 tanks, they're forced to split their fire, and you're more likely to get something out of them before they go.

Well the long road helps the foot guys a bit. Hide behind terrain, move out and fire with 1\s rerolled from hit. Provided they have something visible on T1 of course. If not I lose the reroll.

Vindicator's meanwhile can't hide out of sight and shoot at full effect on turn 1.

Are you using Primarchs Chosen rite of war? As Horus is too expensive to fit into a 2k point list otherwise.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

huh? Wasn't limit 25% of army size. 25% of 2000=500 to a spot.

Phew you gave me good scare That would have meant total redesign as for the ROW I would be short of terminator or veteran squad and those are not cheap.

I'll see if I can post photo of them lined up now that I have them all painted up and ready to go(plus some spares and working on further models)

I hate to say it, but Horus may not be the best choice in a 2,000 point list. Due to his expense, I usually don't field him until I get to 2,500+ points, or it's a "Special Game" like Primarch Thunderdome- all the Primarchs go in, only one comes out.

If you take Horus out, what would you put in the list? I always ask myself "How will I deal with a Primarch? What about a Spartan?" If you took Horus out, you could add another Apothecary for your other tactical squad, add a Vindicator, and still have some points for maybe a small Vet squad, or Destroyer squad, or my favorite a Moritat Consul.

The deepstrike of Horus and the Terminators- you have to be very, very careful. You'll land, and try to be within 12" of a target. Anything that can shoot at Horus and his squad, will. On top of that, your opponent might try to assault the unit first, hoping to tar pit or delay Horus from moving from this spot. Walking across the board has it's own issues. It's a risky tactic. It's paid off for me, and other times, I've lost the entire unit down to Horus, who was wounded and subsequently taken out in the next assault phase.

Any idea what you are going to expect at this tournament? Angron in a Spartan with a bunch of Berzerkers? Death Guard shooting Rapier Quad Guns and a Basilisk or two in the back field? Iron Warriors with nothing but Predator Plasma (I hate that list!)? Custodies? If there was one army I'd ban from a tournament, it would be those guys.

I think your list will do well enough if you play well enough. It'll struggle against some of the common skew lists. Like the infamous 9 Quad Mortars, which seems to be present in every tournament I've been to. Those players know how much of a dick move it is, yet they do it anyways, hiding behind the excuse that it's a tournament.

Well from reports of previous tournaments players seems to have been able to self policy nicely so i don't expect worst quad mortar spams. But apart from that no idea. Maybe if i went through previous tournaments i might have idea what legions i might face but so far it's just list of player names.

And yeah Horus is point sink but having painted him itching to field him

The Warmaster is NEVER a points sink. He is Horus Lupercal! The Warmaster of the Legions! I know the painted itch and wanting to field Horus well. I just never have much luck with him at 2,000 points. He really, really likes a big host to go into battle with him.

He's worthwhile point sink

Anyway yeah I knew he would make it hard to make work in 2k. Agreed it's small especially as you generally want something to have around and transport would be nice but alas only one that fits him+bodyguard is spartan and that I find rather boring combination(and think it would go bit against the request of fluffy less competive lists. Softer lists likely struggle with that).

Deep strike can be risky but who tells I have to go up to faces. Without transport options are deep strike or walk on foot and unless I expect to go 2nd and enemy put something close enough for T1 charge OR lots of AP2 templates deep striking with Horus is best option. I can put them where I would have walked anyway.

But the model is so gorgeous. It alone drew me to Sons of Horus. Maybe even to 30k. I'm eternally grateful for Forge World sending replacement head after I stupidly lost last one.

BTW found blog post of store that contains army lists of one of the previous tournaments. Show armies that were then. Of course changes to be expected but you can see maybe somewhat of power level.

Don't think I saw any phoshor or spartan. There was rather scary all tank iron hand list though. That could be tough one!
