Anyone picked up Assassins Creed Origins?
Ive only ever played Black Flag and thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed it, not least because of the ship exploration and combat.
Not sure ACO has that element however.

Been thinking about it.
It looks like it moved closer to the Batman games/Shadow of War for gameplay (which I suspect is a good thing).

But on the other hand, AC games tend to be absurdly silly and bad at launch.

I'll likely wait for steam sales or a 'game of the year' edition (and a sale).

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

AC: Origins is a welcome breath of fresh air to a stagnent series. Syndicate for me was the first AC game i didnt finish, I wasnt invested i the story and the time period wasnt to my liking. Origins is set in Egypt and is filled with all the things you expect and more ! Romans, pyramids, tombs and a brilliant story (which is very 50/50 with some loving it and some hating it). To top it all off a new combat system is introduced which revitalises combat from the old counter kills, which at first kicked my ass but i got used to it.

Yeah I think Origins is the best AC game in years

How was the launch/bugs/stability?

This will be a half off black Friday purchase for me on XBox 1. Hopefully by then they will have the bugs fixed if there are a bunch.

I'm on PC, the game runs fine and I can't think of any bugs off the top of my head (if any).

Only grip is the controls but I got used to them quick enough.

I wish I could get into AC. I love the worlds that they build, but I just cannot stand the game play style.

Which part of the gameplay is that ? ACO is the biggest departure from the series to date. If there was ever a time to try it out, this is the time. Yes you still hop in bushes and stealthy dispatch guards but if you get caught or go in swords akimbo it is a very different experience. Im not sure if the new loot system adds anything, maybe it gives you something to aim for ? I never bothered to upgrade all my gear to legendary (carbon crystals) but I dont mind it.

Been enjoying it a lot. The main story is very good. The sailing through the sands of the desert and massive open world are great too. Would have preferred ancient Egypt over Ptolemaic era Egypt, but ah well!

My main complaint is that there are a lot of side missions that are ok, but which detract a bit from the main story. It does enable you to see a lot of the map, but a large percentage seem to end up being kill an animal or raid a fort.

The fighting and crafting systems are good.

Not on the same level as black flag, but probably the second best AC (or maybe third best after one of the Italian ones). Dramatically better than syndicate which sucked IMHO.

They need to hurry up and do feudal Japan though!

I found that with BF too a lot.
I think the side missions are there really to mess about it/explore rather than fully engage the player.
Reminds me a bit of the Farcry series - lots of base/camp raiding or convoy hijacking but not all that interesting after a while.

Still as long as the main plot and action holds up, I'll be happy.

Got in about 2 hours last night.
Is it me or is combat less visceral and dynamic than ACBF? It seems more about timing and strikes than juicy sword play

Combat is very different to black flag. More generic-game and less assassin's creed. Makes you feel less powerful as a result, but able to take on larger squads of enemies, so balances out overall I think. The upgrades make combat more interesting at least.

Yes I jumped the gun. I invested a few more points in combat/bows and its a lot more interesting now.

A few early queries:

Does it limit your map exploration early on? Ive desynced a few times running off nilly willy into the deep desert?

Is crafting new weapons / gear important or can you rely on rewards/looting to get by?

Should I horde cash? Does it get cash stingy later on?

if a quest is 1-2 levels above you, is it a total no no? Or can you muddle through?

limited exploration: Yes, there are walls that block you, but you can go a lot of places

crafting: upgrading is good, loot/rewards are better. Upgrading is a multiplier so worth doing

horde cash: yes, you can pay to upgrade weapons to your current level but it is expensive. Good to level up your best legendary weapons before key fights but expensive. You can also buy crafting ingredients later.

1-2 level above quest: you can muddle through easily enough on most of them.

I'm going to play Syndicate before starting this one and dismayed to see a lot of people here don't seem to think much of that one.

Holy moly this game is big.
Like huge!

Very enjoyable so far, although some of the side / mini quests are a bit throw away.

For anyone who's made significant progress in the game, how much of the plot concerns the First Civilisation alien crap and/or future stuff? I'm more tempted by this than any AC since Black Flag, but the reason I liked Black Flag was that I could ignore a lot of that stuff and just enjoy cool mechanics and a really nice world to explore, with occasional forays into a plot that managed to hold my interest because it was about actual characters with their own motivations and stories, rather than all coming back to the nonsense with the aliens and the animus and all that.

In other words, can I treat Origins as a chance to run around a really beautifully recreated period of history with some fun characters and stories, or will I get bogged down in hours of Ancient Aliens or Super-VR that consistently puts me off the series? I've heard the game described as The Witcher 3 But In Ancient Egypt, and that sounds almost perfect (actually perfect would be the same but in Ancient Rome!), but I'm hesitant because of the baggage that usually comes with an AC game/story.

Can you clarify, do you mean the parts of the game in acbf where you leave the animus and run around the office etc etc?

Im only circa level 16 in aco so cant comment on how indepth the alien stuff gets but so far in I've seen none of that. I have left the animus twice so far but the surrounding plot seems to be an archeological digsite with a young girl investigating it.

In terms of the egypt world and exploration, you absolutely can immerse yourself in it and I'd recommend doing so. The map is genuinely huge and there are tonnes of side quests and localised quests that dont affect the main plot but can be fun and immersive.

But as said, Im only level 16 atm.

Basically, in the AC games I've played (3 and BF), I basically found that any point where I was pulled out of the animus (for gameplay or a cutscene) just really caused me to lose interest and momentum. I appreciate it'd be hard for the series to ditch it at this point as it's the main framing device for the whole thing, but ideally I'd like it to be as minimal as possible.

So if it's a case of every few hours, there's a present-day cutscene between acts that lasts 5 minutes then I'm back to assassinating folks in Ancient Egypt, then that's fine (I can just make a cup of tea while it's playing and ignore that element! ), if on the other hand it's going to pull me out and make me wander round an office or hack a computer or sneak through an airport or whatever, I just find that really immersion-breaking and lose interest.

Like I say, I'm definitely more up for Origins than the last few simply because of the setting and revised combat, I just want to make sure those elements aren't too intrusive before I pick up a copy.

Full agree with acbf - the non animus pieces were enjoyable the first two? times and then ripped the heart out of the immersion from then on in :(

I cant comment on how far aco takes this, although did reach level 18 last night and still only 2 non animus pieces which were short enough.

Perhaps someone further along can help.

Up to lvl25 now Para and about 33% complete according to the ubisoft menu.
Still only the two non animus interruptions and combat is darn meaty at this point after a few more talent points.

Excellent. Definitely on the list now, I shall likely pick it up after Christmas as the more I see/hear, the more interested in it I am, sounds like it's a genuinely top quality game which is sometimes rare in franchises that have gone on this long.

Update: I bought it, I like it!

Got it for a good price in Tesco (£32, which for an AAA game that's only about a month old is pretty great) and first impressions are very good indeed. I particularly appreciate it throwing you in the deep end rather than having to sit through an hour plus of tutorial and exposition, and the gameplay itself is great.

Really nice combat system that feels properly responsive and seems like it'll take more to master than just mashing the Counter button for insta-kills like previous games. Enjoying the variety of weapons and the fact just wading into a bit of a messy melee is a perfectly viable strategy at times (at least until I unlock a few more Stealth skills).

And of course it looks incredible. I can see myself having a lot of fun with this one, so cheers again to Ratius for convincing me it was worth a look!

On an unrelated note, I remember reading a while back about some time-limited challenges and such, are those going to rotate and/or be offered again or is it a case of 'if you miss them, you've missed them'? I imagine it'll be a while before I'm ready for them in any case (I believe they were high-level boss fights with unique gear as rewards) but hopefully the ones I've missed might come back around.

I've been super hesitant on this since Unity. I've been a huge fan of the series since the beginning, but Unity burned me so badly I even skipped Syndicate and was prepared to give this a miss as well. Fanatical had it for 35% off which is low enough that I pulled the trigger.

New climbing system is a huge improvement. Dropping handholds and doing (what I hear is) a Breath of the Wild style 'climb anything' approach opened it up immensely.

I liked the old combat system for its flair, but it was never challenging. This combat system feels a bit clunky but at least it's more interesting to actually fight. Good starting point for the series to build on, at least.

Visually... wow. I'm running it on Very High and it looks amazing. I get a bit of slowdown in towns but I hear that's a common problem with how it handles NPC paths and such.
