Hi guys, just started collecting warhammer 40k again. Used to collect and play when I was a child at my local games workshop store in Thurrock.

I bought some orks and space marines to paint, and play small games with my son's.

It seems alot has changed since I last played or maybe I just wasn't that clued up on the rules as much as I thought I was.

I have a couple of queries to ask and if this is not relevant in this section of the thread I do apologise, but here they are:

1. I want to create my own paint scheme for the space marines and orks but to follow the rules and codex for that army. Is that allowed?

2. I bought the 7th edition rulebook to learn and play can I still use this for games with my son's or would you advise I got the 8th edition instead.

Thanks for your help guys hopefully I'll be posting alot more in the near future.

Welcome back to the hobby Staggsy666, hope you'll enjoy your stay on dakka.

1. Regarding paintscheme, create whatever you like, as long as your opponent is clear on the rules you are using, you can event paint ultramarines as black templars.

2. I haven't played with 7th, went straight from 3rd to 8th. But from what I hear, the 8th simplified the rules a great deal compared to a bloated 7th. I personally love what they did with the 8th.

Have a great return to the hobby !

Thank you, I'm gonna make the investment into the 8th edition.

Hello and welcome to Dakka! I agree with KernelTerror, you should get 8th edition. I learned the game with 7th, and it really was a mess. 8th is simpler, cleaner, and quicker to learn and play. It's not without its faults, but it's way better than 7th.

As for colour scheme, they're your models. You paint them how you want, the GW schemes are just suggestions. You can paint your Marines yellow and pink and still play them as Ultramarines if that's what you want.

The 8th is definitely an investment I'm gonna make. And thanks for clearing up the paint schemes. I just wasn't sure where I stood with the rules of the army. But as long as I make it clear what army rules I'm playing with all will be good. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Welcome back! I took about an 8 year break for 6th and 7th because I didn't like the direction of the game. Since 8th, I've been back and ecstatic to play again.

As long as you are clear with your opponent of what chapter of Space Marines you are, I've never heard of or experienced any issues with army colors.
If you decide to mix chapters (say have Imperial Fists as well) I would say that it would be best for them to painted differently to keep from any confusion.

Because a full 8th edition rulebook is included in the Dark Imperium box, it's extremely cheap on eBay. I would pick up a $20 rulebook and play with 8th.
It's relevant, and extremely simplified /streamlined (in a good way).
