Wow. Religion once again trying to control people in a way that makes it seem both scary, stupid and ridiculous at the same time.

I have no problem with people having religious or other supernatural beliefs, but I can't stand when they attempt to push their faith onto others. The less religion has to do with public life, the better.

You're talking to someone who's painted moe anime girls on the sides of tanks. Comics and manga are everywhere.

I'm not saying the OP is lying or anything, but I haven't seen anything in the mainstream news about this.

Yeah, right?

This was the tell-tale comment to me: "The festival in Tripoli had a young and cosmopolitan feel to it." ..."Young and Cosmopolitan" is the kryptonite of religious extremism.

You may not think the BBC is a proper source of news, but the majority seem to.
Admittedly, the BBC article was only really repeating and linking to the https://www.libyaherald.com article. The photos in the BBC article appear to be stock, though.
Most other news sites have nothing really to add: https://www.news24.com/Africa/News/libya-armed-group-detains-comic-con-organisers-for-attack-on-morals-20171104. The BBC's is the only one to link to its source.

There was a group of young people in Iran that made a music video a few years back that were arrested, and if I recall correctly, beaten for it.

This is less about religion trying to control people, and more about people using religion as a excuse to maintain their secular power over others.

Or not. Or it could be both. Or something else altogether. None of us live there, we're just projecting our own vague thoughts on the actions and region of the world. Certainly, I doubt anyone posting here actually has enough information to make a reasoned statement on the matter, or contradict the speculations of others.

I still say bravo to the organizers and a bigger exalt to the attendees! A lot of people throw around terms like courage when it's not really applicable, but here it's applicable. Right fething on!
