I've been watching King of Random a lot recently and one of the things I really liked was the mini-metal foundry he made. Now I've seen the followup video where he mentioned that it's not really the most optimal of setups; just a cool DIY thing that has a lot of hazards. But I do like the idea of melting metal and doing some home casting/recycling of metal. So I was wondering if any of you have any experience in it, and maybe could offer either advice on safety and proceedures, or maybe recommend a commercially available home foundry setup (I think Storage Wars or something had one of the guys mention he had one for smelting down jewelry to make silver or gold ingots).

(For the record I'm not intending on this being a professional thing; it's gonna be purely a hobby thing. I just have a lot of things I wanna make that would be made 10 times easier if I could just cast it out of metal. Like a human skeleton. Don't ask ).

What exactly are you trying to do with it?

Making a gas based forge with refactory cement isnt all that hard.

you can make a pretty small soup can one too for forging.

otherwise make a big enough one for a crucible if you want to melt things like copper from street scrap for fun.

Casting a few medium-sized things out of aluminum preferably. I also want to try and cast an endoskeleton for a doll thing I'm making.

Oh man good luck with that.

yeah that king o random thing should be fine.

after that you may need to learn how to do lost foam casting.

and also a LOT of aluminum cans. you get surprisingly little from a single can and IIRC aluminum cans dont cast well but its been a while.

I once got to work in a production foundry before (due to an exchange program) and got to try out lost foam casting, so I know it's kind of ass to do.

King of Random has made a total of three types of foundries; one that uses coal, one that uses gas and one that uses what I only understand as basically a home-made arc welder to melt metal (I've seen other tutorials on how to make it so that it's coiled around the crucible instead of being two needles you poke in).

It seems like coal is the safest (no chance of explosion while having less of a chance to accidentally spill things that can cause 3rd degree burns) while the arc method is the least wasteful. Which one is generally better?

Personally id say the gas one

Coal requires a lot of work to use. and probably makes an ungodly mess.

The arc one is incredibily limited.

Gas so long as you build it carefully would work best.

Hmmmm. I won't lie, kinda paranoid about accidentally blowing myself up. Do you know of any commercial home foundries?

Googling electric aluminum melting furnace netted me

for about 4 bones.

just look for one that goes over 1,220 degrees Fahrenheit

apparently that is the temp target.

Can you give me the link to that one? I can only find dodgy ebay links and industrial ones on google.

It seems to be right.

doesnt seem to be very high capacity though. id research some more before going ham.

I've been watching a lot of Forged in Fire lately so I too am interested in metalworking now. I hope people that do this at home post some pics or stories because this is a cool thread.

I have a small furnace and crucible for bronze casting in my shed. "Lost wax" method.
It also does me for white-metal-alloy casting when I do it occasionally (that's usually done with a RTV heat resistant silicone rubber mould).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
