if i was looking to pick up a game that was closer to the old version of quest where you just slog through a dungeon killing things and the leveling up at the end then i would want to grab quest right?
shadespire is a more competitive one off deck building competitive game right?

if quest is the better choice can anyone recommend either silver tower or hammerhal or are they both good?

is quest a little easier on the younger folk seeing as you can help them since youre not trying to beat them... lol.

Quest is more casual, meant to be played with people you know well and want to have an experience with. Shadespire is very much a 1v1 game. Not to say you won't have a good time playing it, but it's more head-to-head, which has ups and downs for playing with friends.

Shadespire is, however, much quicker and easier to pick up and play, Quest requires some amount of setup and a bit more of a learning curve for the "GM" at least.

I could never get a group together for Quest so I don't have a lot of experience with it, Shadespire is nice because you can just pick it up and then go and play it wherever other people have it.

man, its a tough call between the two.
i'm really looking for something that i can just throw down and play which sounds like shadespire but im also looking for something that is just a little mindless hack and slash which sounds like quest...

its quite the dilemma =P

Shadespire is going to be a lot easier to play because there is so little set up and you only need two players.

WHQ is fun. I've played through both Silver Tower and Hammerhal. Silver Tower comes with cooler minis IMO but Hammerhal is a better story.

Quest doesnt really need a GM. Silver Tower needs someone to read the passages, but we jsut let the 'Torchbearer' do it, we played it three player with no GM fine.
Hammerhal does need a GM. If im honest, I enjoyed Silver Tower more. I though Hammerhal would be more like old fashned quest, but it doesnt seem quite 'right'. It doesnt really have a mechanism for random dungeon generation (but silver tower does!), and there isnt the customisation of characters.
Shadespire is more of a 1v1 (or more!) game, with models, where the play style is determined befre game by card selection. Sort of (and im aware the camparison isnt entirely accurate) like GW's version of X-Wing if youve played that.

I would grab both silver tower and hammerhal and leave shadespire on the shelf.

Grab shadespire. For less than what either of the two games costs (give or take), you can get all the expansions, and thus be able to play a 4-man match of shadespire (you'd need a printer or more boards from ebay, but it would still clock around the say.

shadespire is cheaper, but for options, even with 4 or more warbands likely wont have the replayability of the combined warhammer quest series (which are also good for skirmish forces in AoS)

I have played both silver tower and Shadespire with my son. Shadespire went down much better. We played first just as a simple move and fight game with only objectives but no ploys. He really enjoyed the competitive aspect of it.
Silver tower started OK but he quickly lost interest.
He is very young (just six years old).
Shadespire makes for an excellent first wargame as you can layer on the mechanics over the course of several games increasing the challenge and complexity as you go.
That said Shadespire is emphatically not a dungeon crawler and if you don't enjoy overtly competitive games then it is not for you.

Shadespire has has lots of ability to be replayed as a competitive game, where deckbuilding and playstyle can change from match to match, person to person.

Quest has can be replayed as different adventures.

One does not preclude the other.

I don't know, Silver Tower doesn't have much replay-ability. Once you've played through the campaign once, there are some things that just won't be as much fun since you'll know what is going to happen. There are plenty of different heroes you could try playing with. And with Hammerhal, you need a GM to make up an adventure.

And if you're looking for leveling up, there isn't much of it in Silver Tower.

In my experience the most fun and replayability in Silver Tower comes from switching to new heroes with every playthrough as the group dynamic changes quite drastically. You really need the extra hero cards for longevity, though.

The story, well, I did find it predictable, but I'm old enough to have seen a lot. It's probably more surprising for kids.

I think it's important to keep in mind that Silver Tower and Underworlds come from two different eras of management thinking, according to James Hewitt. Management was interested in using boxed games to sell miniatures when Silver Tower was greenlit. By contrast, new management wanted to sell a game for its own sake with Underworlds. I think there is unquestionably more game in Underworlds, whereas you get a lot of cool minis with Silver Tower plus a neat campaign you can have fun with once or twice.
