Since the old Rebels thread is long buried and the new series is airing, time for yet another Star Wars related thread in Geek Media!

I caught up with the first 6 episodes of Series 4 this morning, and so far I think it's off to a great start. The opening 2-parter is straight away one of my favourite stories the show has done, with plenty of nice callbacks to CLone Wars as well, and the second set of episodes with Saw Gererra does a good job fleshing him out and contextualising his actions in Rogue One a bit more, while also nicely hinting at larger developments.

Thrawn in his brief appearances so far is still absolutely killing it, and the characters all seem to really be reaching their zenith now. I'm glad they're pushing Kanan and Hera's relationship a bit more (it kind of took a back seat for the last couple of few seasons) though I can't help but wonder if it's going to make the ultimate conclusion of the series all the more tragic...

So, what's the rest of Dakka making of it? Oh, and please keep stuff S4 in spoiler tags as far as possible, I don't know how far behind the US we are but last year it was a good 3-4 episodes.

Still haven’t seen any of it.

Can’t get a Sky signal in my flat, and it’s not up on iTunes yet.

Desperate to see it, because it’s an ace series!

I'm waiting for season four to end so I can just binge it all in one go.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

It's... not off to a great start.

There's been a demonstrable shift in the violence this season, with the main characters almost never shooting their enemies (preferring to disarm and knock them out). The Jedi never hit people with their sabres (they just slice weapons), and we spent too much time with Ezra being a moron (and making funny voices). But Stormtroopers falling to their deaths (screaming the whole way) or people falling into furnaces? Those are ok, as long as they die by accident, not because they were killed by any heros.

Even in an episode where there's a 'darker' hero (Saw) who is basically made out to be a Rebel terrorist, he gets the jump on a pair of Stormies and... stuns then? Pointblank stun shots to the face.

I don't know what's going on.

True, I had noticed that... but then it's also ok for Bo Katan to jetpack onto a TIE, drop a grenade in the hatch and casually fly away while it explodes...

Rebels has always been less direct than Clone Wars in its depictions of violence, but that's never really bothered me to be honest; you can assume they're hitting stuff off-screen and it doesn't really detract from the storytelling. I'm not sure there's any less direct killing this time than last series, or whether we just notice it more now it's actually a wartime setting and pitched battles are being fought between larger opposing forces. To be fair though, the whole of the OT never once featured a Stormtrooper getting lightsabered, Finn's kill in TFA was the first time we've seen that in live action.

Spoiler:

I do find it odd they can run an episode about a weapon literally designed to specifically boil Mandalorians inside their own armour, which is grim even by Clone Wars standards, or a Rebel so extreme he's willing to torture and leave prisoners to die, but can't show a Stormtrooper being shot... unless he's in a TIE or Walker, then by all means explode him into next week... it's a strange foible, but I'm not sure it's anything new, and personally it doesn't distract me from the stories which I think are still top notch.

Where ever the Emperor needs his eyes

Despite the apparent shift in violence as pointed out by HBMC, Im enjoying the show. Its still miles ahead of where it was in Season 1 and theres still the air of fun in their adventures.

The Empire is mindbogglingly stupid, but what else is new?

Also I like the pushing of Kanan and Hera's relationship, it fits nicely, and like you mentioned Paradigm, it will likely lead to tragedy at the end of the season.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Talking of violence, did I imagine "the sound" or did the pilot character snap that Stormtrooper's neck? Somewhat undercut by Hera choosing to stun the walker crew a moment later, but that kinda fits with her characterisation as being something of a middle ground between Mon Mothma and Saw; a woman of action, but not someone who enjoys killing her enemies.

That battle sequence at the beginning though, awesome *Italian TV chef kiss*. Made me realise one of the things that really bothered me about TFA without even realising at the time what was bugging me - they never say the magic words; lock s-foils in attack position. X-Wings going into combat without that phrase is just...wrong

Yeah, the violence this season is a little weird. Would you rather:

A) Be decapitated
B) Fall into a furnace and burn to death

Despite most of you probably choosing "A", "B" is somehow considered more kid-friendly.

If you notice it almost seems like Ezra force pushed him in given the amount of force the Trandoshan went into the furnace with, that or moved his lightsaber to kill him cruelly that way to begin with. Doesn't help that the focus and the sardonic comment makes it seem like he's skirting on the dark side still, but that may be the odd way the camera kept focusing between Ezra and his lightsaber that makes me think of this.

Around 45 seconds into the opening X-wing attack (S04E09) HERA quite clearly says those magic words.

He’s meaning in The Force Awakens

I get the violence thing, but remember this is a kid’s show. Our heroes still kill when there’s no alternative (like Space Battles), but their evident moral streak means they won’t if they don’t have to. But we still see a high level of killing. The Baron, the crews of several cruisers, and at least a couple of Star Destroyers.

Series final airs next week (as in LAST episode ever for rebels).

Double-length episode (so 14 episodes total for s4).

They've answered the "what happened to Ahsoka?" question but also left it there.

There will, naturally, be another animated series coming, and at least one live-action show (but they've been saying that about the live-action show for 20 years now).

Pre I think would be more interesting. Bounty Hunters supposedly flourished in the age of the Empire, so I think a Boba Fett show should really focus on that.

You thought that was a serious question?

Boba Fett escaped the Sarlacc Pit in the Expanded Universe...but the Expanded Universe is still canon. So Boba Fett is technically still being digested by the Sarlacc.

Would make for an amusing body horror movie I suppose.

I'd rather watch it in real time than any of the "reality tv" on the box ...

I hope the Live Action show stays clear of anything to do with the Jedi and the Force.

If they do a Bobba Fett live action show it should be an Inspector Gadget/Mr Magoo style comedy series where he bumbles his way to victory and acclaim despite his own incompetence.

That would be amazing.

(Thank you weekly planet for this idea)

That said, "Star Wars live action TV show" has been vaporware since the late 90s.

George wanted to do one post ep3. However, iirc, it hinged on him getting his Marin County studios up and running (blocked by the other residents of the area because it would cause "too much unruliness" from the construction and probably *poor people*).

Which didn't happen. He didn't get on with his neighbours, apparently, and they didn't want the influx of those workers.

Series finale was pretty good. A little too much of a victory lap where all the conflicts were resolved with random support from random characters from prior episodes, but pretty good none the less.

It's probably good that TLJ killed everyone's interest in Snoke prior to this releasing though, because otherwise people would be going nuts with speculation. As is, I'm looking forward to the likely sequel series taking place post RotJ.

At what point in the OT movie timeline does this Season end?

Before Episode 4?
Between 4 and 5?
Between 5 and 6?

Before Rogue One I’d imagine?

Ghost, Chop and Hera all (kind of) feature.

At the very least the end bit with Sabine's monologue takes place after Episode 6, since she mentions Hera & Rex fighting at Endor.

The end where the planet is first liberated almost 100% takes place before Rogue One, as earlier in this half of Season 4 'Stardust' (the Death Star project) is mentioned as being a rival project to Thrawn's defenders with Krennic name-dropped and everything.

This also baffled me. Literally 2 or three episodes before the finale, someone is talking about Star Dust still being in development, and then in the finale it's almost like they suddenly jumped to events happening concurrent to Episode 6? SO what.... the Empire didn't do anything about all that for a solid couple years? Kind of convenient but oh well

What's baffling? There was a clear time jump after the final battle. They liberate Lothal and then Sabine narrates what everyone did during the events of the main trilogy before cutting to a scene that takes place after the Emipre has fallen. Did you think she took off immediately after the liberation or something?
