In an attempt to return to the warhammer hobby, I am building a gaming table. Logic being that it will get the creative juices flowing and give me my own table for my brother and I use at home.

I decided to go with a trench warfare table because trench warfare is grimdark. I wanted to a city theme, but my brother wanted to do something involved grass and fields. We figured a World War 1 battlefield would allow us to cover both ruins and wild fields. We divided the board into 2x2 modular pieces, to better mix things up and feasably put somewhere in the house.

As a centerpiece I attempted to make a giant crater, something properly in the scale of 40k. We stacked it like cake pieces so models could placed more easily. Unfortunately, it might not look like a crater anymore. We'll see how it looks after a paint job.

Same with the crater, we stacked foam pieces to add some vertical dimension to the boards.

The trenches ended up being pretty shallow and wide, but I wanted something that could fit most base sizes to make things easier. I'm not a fan of how the sticks look. I think I might tear them out and break them into smaller pieces for better scale. The corrugated panels I'm going to paint up to look like corrugated steel. It should add a more ramshackle look, like the trenches were made quickly with poor skills. Maybe an Ork tried his hand at a more defensive combat style.

Overall I'm enjoying making a table and hopefully it comes together better with some sand and a some paint.

Yes. I may be a pyro, but I'm a careful pyro.

I was trying to find a way to make the look of rotten wood planks.

I've gotten a few steps finished between photos. I added some sand and cover over with paint to seal it in. A darker brown is painted into the craters and trenches to add some dimension. The idea in my head is that the field has partially dried, leaving the lower ground levels saturated.

More work done. I'm just about finished the first piece. The trenches have been painted and I attempted a wash. I watered down the wash to try and extend it's coverage, but it ended up looking almost milky when it dried. looks fine though. Wood still looks a bit light so I'll try adding another layer of wash to muddy it up. Also, I'm having the hardest time getting hot glue to hold in place. Would roughing up the surface help with bonding?

Next I want to put a water effect in the bottom of the craters. I'm going to need to do my homework before starting that, so any how to's and articles would be welcome.

Trying to add more details to the boards.

I had some spare missiles so I added a dud to the board for some story. Might add sandbags and barbed wire later.
