I went to a tournament the other day and used conscripts and psykers. It worked quite well. I've tried to develop the theme into a competitive list. I was struck that the conscripts didn't just melt to morale like I'd suspected they would. Often my opponent needed them dead, or couldn't bring enough firepower to bear on them to make morale matter. If it was vital, I could just use the 2CP power to keep a unit in play.

The plan: use tallarn conscripts to form a screen for a core of psykers that advance towards the enemy. Psykers take the centre field and smite down the enemy at will. The conscripts and mortars focus on blowing away all enemy chaff so the psykers can get stuck into the more expensive enemy units turn 2. After the conscripts die, the characters use clever combats and screening astropaths to survive as long as possible. The mortars and lascannons/plasma sit back in cover and shoot. Rough riders outflank on mass, as does the tallarn infantry squad with the officer with the dagger. Sound scary?

Seattle Area

Your force organization is all messed up...

The 2nd battalion lists 6 elites choices, and a battalion only gets 3 slots.

Your brigade lists 8 elites choices, and only gets 6 slots.

Froth at the top, dregs at the bottom, but the middle - excellent

Don't brigades get 8 elites and battalions get 6? Don't have my rulebook to hand but I thought that was the norm

Yes brigades get 3-8 Elites, battalions get 0-6 Elites.

List is awesome, if I had more regular Tallarn guardsmen I would field this list. Lol

Very similar to my ETC list mate, but the reason I dropped the list is the abundance of Celexus assassins!

My only concern, is you having enough time to play out 6 turns in a 2.5-hour game – especially with how ITC scoring works now.

Feels very strong and annoying to play against too. Lots of smites and lots of bubble wrap for them (just makes me glad my latest list has 15 snipers in it ).
130 bodies to chew through it going to be extremely hard for a lot of armies, and that’s before looking at the 60-backfield infantry and then mortars. Because of the Ld 9 bubble from the Inquisitors you’d have to be killing 16 conscripts from each 25-man squad in 1 turn to stand a chance of them all running… Lol...

However, I do feel like some lists could do well against this. High fire power mech lists that can remain mobile and keep out of smite range potentially have a chance to survive (prob won’t win though) Would be interesting to see how this does against a couple Punisher Russes and support units. Any list that can jump over the screens and into the characters will be good too – unless of course you’re playing it with no gaps between the units and characters.

One thing to be aware of though, and this is only a rumour… But, there is a potential nerf coming to smite in Chapter Approved. Either a limit to the number of casts, or the casting difficult increases with each cast.

Eldar, Chaos, new Nids and these lists are the reason why i bring a Culexus along with my AM super Heavy list. 1 culexus is pretty much good enough to shut down most of the Smites. Not all but most
