Stating this ahead of time at the very top of this post, I do not own a Tyranid book, and I have no reason to, for gameplay.

I'm assembling an army of Tyranids for my GF's christmas present, because she wants to paint her own army. But just for the sake of "If she ever gets into the game" ,how many Devourers should I slap on these Termagaunts? Do they have the ability to take 1 for every 5-10, or just as many as they want?

They can take anywhere from zero to all of them with devourers. Many run a mix of fleshborers and devourers.

There's a tyranids tactics thread where this is probably more appropriate.

If she's never really going to play, does it matter what they're modeled with?

Did you buy her a Trygon? Or a Tyrannocyte? Or does her list have a way to deep strike these guys? Because their PPM jumps with devourers, so their viability is tied directly to how you're going to use them.

Honestly, just going half and half isnt bad, devourers and fleashborers. Up until certain stratagems became available 10 fleshborers to 20 devourers in a 30 gant squad was pretty common.

Also, more devourers give you more points for fewer models, if painting 90 gants looks tedious, or you're looking to save a few bucks, or looking to hit a certain points value quicker.

Because they die like flies and you're planning for the ablative wounds. Hence my question regarding the rest of her list.

30 devourer gaunts gives a full size squad of shooty guys. Either run them all with devourers or give 10 of them fleshborers.. Any others should also be fleshborers.

You can take as many as you want. These days most folks seem to run them as all Devourers (aka: Devilgaunts) or 50/50. That is so you can take the low cost models as loses, and still maintain a stiff shooting profile.
