Hi newby here with a few questions about GeneStealer Cults.
I noticed in the army they can use Astra Militarum units. Does anyone know what exact units can be used in a GeneStealer army?
Also the same goes for Tyranids. do they have to have the Genestealer Cults Keyword?
im considering building/buying a GeneStealers army and quite like the idea of using Tyranids and Astra Militarum aswell.

The short answer is "All of them"....the "standard way is to take the differant chunks as seperate commands, if you mix and match in a command you lose benefits, like Ambush, Hive Fleet, or Orders.

The way the rules work as read regarding AM GSC is for every genestealer cult force organization you bring you can bring a single AM force regardless of keywords. However you must use the "Imperium" keyword rules for the regiment. this means no regiment exclusive orders, strategems, units or characters (i.e no Catachan jungle fighters, Tallarn move&shoot regiment bonuses, Creed etc...). if you want to mix all three use the tyranid keyword to bring a pure nid force, a pure GSC force, and a pure AM force but keep in mind that the buffs and bonuses per faction only apply to units within the keyword force. (i.e a Nid Psyker cannot use catalyst on GSC infantry. GSC infantry does not benefit from Kronos' reroll 1s to shoot, a primus can't use might from beyond on hormagaunts etc...)

Would anyone have any advice on which units to put into a 2000 point army?

Hi! Check the tactics forums, quite a lot there. I think most people would say lots of genestealers, some neophytes and maybe trucks + big Astra detachments

I've actually just started to do this, I picked up overkill box to get the GSC I need.

I have a big guard force and I got a good deal on some nids recently.

I want to take a baneblade (or variant) and just have it crawling with hormagaunts. Nice thing you can still use the Vengeance for Cadia on the baneblade, so against chaos that would just be mean.

It actually offers a lot of variety, which makes me really excited. I'm getting a little bored of gunline and tallaran guard.

Another factor GSC can technically use Nid stratagems and relics that don't require a hive fleet keyword. The only real thing your missing out on is Guard Regiments.

For Objective based games a Guard Spearhead with Leman russes, a genestealer force ambushing and a large nid blob would be pretty nasty to go against.

One option I thought would be interesting:

Take a valkyrie or two and hover fly the 19" or take the chance of loosing models and go up to 45" you can take some crusaders or bullgryns and have them drop out and tie up some nasty ranged enemies (using grav cute insertion).

That would relieve some firepower off your advancing nid horde, and you can also have some GSC coming in from the edges.
