At my desk

- Pitched Battle -
Leader:
Vampire Lord - 140pts
Coven Throne - 260pts
Battleline:
Blood Knights - 260pts
Blood Knights - 260pts
- 920pts -

There are two major things in this list I'm not sure about:
Is it better to drop the Vampire Lord and Coven Throne for a Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon? Or keep it how it is with more magic potential?
I have 80 points left over, which I may use to summon a Tomb Banshee or some Bat Swarms/Fell Bats, so which should I get?

Otherwise I think this isn't too bad of a list, considering I want to avoid the traditional Skeleton/Ghoul/Zombie horde armies (which are incredibly viable, but I'm just sick of painting infantry hordes from my Free Peoples army). I do think the Blood Knights put out enough attacks (and with the banner and hunger rules, have the staying power) to win back their points against most targets. The Vampire Lord will probably try to stick with one of the Blood Knight units, just so he can hand out buffs and magic support to them along with being a combat monster himself. And the Coven Throne is basically a Distraction Carnifex that can offer some magic support and maybe get some kills with its ridiculous number of attacks.

So, thoughts?

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

if you are looking for inspiration, last tournament at our FLGS was won with this list (1500 pts):

Bloodknights (5)
Bloodknights (5)
Vampire lord
Vampire lord on zombie dragon
Vargheist (3)
Allies:
5 Dire wolfs
5 Dire wolfs

I would play the lord on dragon instead of the coven, he will perform better in these smaller games imho.

What were the Dire Wolves for?

They were a shield/grabbers/canon fodder depending on what he needed. Most important was that all his unit had 10" movement. What made it very fast and hard hittingand most important: consistent.

Is the non-dragon lord a winged, or mounted vampire?

Thanks for the responses guys. I do think I'll try the Zombie Dragon option.

Also PauliPrinciple, I generally use winged Lords so they're easy to move around the board when I need them to. Should have specified.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Coven thrones are really interesting, and have great hobby potential - unfortunately in-game they aren't exactly great. They do have their uses but they're incredibly niche. I do try and fit them in occasionally if I'm not being competitive. In matched play blood kiss becomes redundant, and the command ability is underwhelming which makes the throne overcosted, it's just not worth 260 points. If the 'Vampire Queen' had the stats of an actual vampire it probably would be, or if you could use beguile on other targets it would be. That being said, it is incredibly fast - 16 inch move with swift death, which is a lot better than what you would replace it with tactically (e.g 6 spirit hosts, more wounds, more attacks, less points).

Something that gets overlooked and underestimated in Soulblight is Fell bats, they're actually quite good for what they can do, very fast screening, chaff or tarpits.

In a 1K list the VLoZD + 2 units of Knights does work fine, but it's also really boring after a few games because you literally have 3 things to move and use. Obviously you will struggle vs hordes and full ranged but that's just soulblight in general.

This is the list I sometimes run at 1K to give myself a bit of variety and more things to do in-game:

VL on Nightmare

5 x Blood Knights

5 x Blood Knights

3 x Fell bats

3 x Fell Bats

3 x Vargheist

You can also drop the bats for vargheists, especially vs more elite armies but this is a decent 'all-comers' list without relying on the dragon to just cheese everyone.

If I'm playing death, I don't care one bit about perceived cheese. I have the weakest Grand Alliance in the game and the smallest selection of models and units to choose from.

if you want pure unadulterated rotten cheese mix Neferata and a vampire lord on zombie dragon with shield. get arcane shield off and neferata's unique spell and the vampire lord has a 2+ save that ignores rend and he heals a wound per turn assuming he gets a kill for 840 points total. add 2 units of 10 zombies or skeletons for battleline and your at approx 1000 pts
