So, my unimaginative friends and relatives somehow got hold of a list of gift ideas for me. Games Workshop gift vouchers have been littering my email for the past week. I'm suddenly sitting on $1,750 of them.

I have a strong preference for purchasing from local shops and do not actually buy anything from GW.

Setting aside the fact all surprise and wonder has been eliminated by sending them immediately - does anyone know if GW gift vouchers work on the Forgeworld site? For that matter, do they work anywhere else?

There's some language about adding the money to a GW store account. If I add them to an account on the GW site, does that prevent me from adding it to the Forgeworld site?

Lastly, is there any way to convert gift vouchers to cash? I am all set for models right now and can't see myself starting another army.

You could always just try them on the FW site. There’s nothing stopping you there. And no, you cannot turn them into cash, outside of purchasing things with them and selling them on.

Don't do this - Forgeworld's site has a nasty habit of marking vouchers as used when they are added in as a test. Happened to me and friend and Forgeworld recommend that you log in and are ready to proceed before adding it

Hrm. Not surprised to hear there are issues. Did FW eventually accept the vouchers?

Thinking there's almost enough there for a Titan, but I really don't want to arm-wrestle with their site to get this to work.

I don’t believe that GW vouchers can be redeemed on FW. FW vouchers state that they cannot be used on GW or BL, so it seems reasonable that GW vouchers would work the same in reverse.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

Nope, you can't use GW on FW - for some bizarre reason which is probably accounting related.

Or at least I couldn't the last time I tried.

LOL not really a troll attempt, just in my opinion very, very few of their models I like. Personally I simply don't like the look/style of most of them.

I get that some people don't like gift certificates and would prefer a more thoughtful gift, but to be clear... you're complaining about $1,750 of store credit to GW's website? I wish my friends and family were so awful. I don't remember the last time anyone gave me a gift even remotely related to one of my hobbies. I do, however, have about twenty pairs of really nice gloves.

The best way to convert gift vouchers to cash is to find someone and sell the vouchers for cash. You'll likely take a loss on the conversion. I'm not sure what the forum rules are, but you could try something like the Dakka Swap Shop or one of the other trading forums. Otherwise, they're good for buying stuff from GW (not FW) and nothing else.

I've never used it but I've seen adverts on the TV (UK) for companies that exchange gift vouchers. Might well be there's some that you can tap into in the USA that would allow you to exchange the vouchers over.

I would expect that a gift vouchers should exchange with minimal loss of value because its basically just converting currency to currency. Heck head down your local club/store and see if anyone there wants to just exchange them over for cash. If they are going to buy something anyway might as well pay with your voucher - they get the exact same product and you've got ready cash to get FW goodies.

Otherwise phone/email FW direct and see if its possible; considering the sum involved it might well be worth their hassle if its purely an internal accounting thing that limits them.

And yeah that sounds like you got a great christmas with that much hobby money!!

Kriswall - I've got a sister who's crazy about giving people slippers! And they are nearly always those leather outside; fur inside kind where the fur tends to matt down to nothing by about half way through the year (which of course means she can buy another set....)

Actually, it's risen to over $2k since the original post.

Please don't take what I had to say as ingratitude, there's more to the story. Sold a company this year, this voucher scheme is more like a crowdfunded suggestion to stay on vacation than a heartfelt expression. Finding out someone told others to do this and everyone went along with it is a little disturbing.

Are GW virtual gift cards transferable? Like, can I actually sell them or give them to the NOVA Foundation?

Buy a crap ton of terrain and donate it to your local hobby shop. You'll be a local hero and will still get to use it.

Tech check the TC for the voucher in the email.

That said I think most of us are shocked that your friends/family coordinated their GW strike on you with such exact precision and a month in advance! That's some dedicated planning and organising!

Ahhhh... that makes a lot more sense, and yes, is a bit disturbing. The NOVA idea is a fantastic idea if you don't need/want the vouchers. I'm fairly certain they're transferrable, so long as they haven't been attached to an account yet.

In case it matters, Forgeworld wrote me back saying GW gift vouchers are no good on their site. They sent a link to the Terms of Sales page on GW's website.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Terms-and-Conditions-of-Sale

What it says is:

"6.2 Virtual Gift Vouchers must be redeemed by the recipient (Recipient) on the Website towards the purchase of eligible products listed in our online catalogue and sold by us."

"6.4 Virtual Gift Vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash and are not transferable or assignable in any way."

So, the vouchers are associated with your email address, you can't give them away, and they stop working after 24 months.

There are worse problems to have. This is just a little goofy.

Look, I'll be the generous one here and offer to use them all for you

Actually wish this would happen to me haha-going through very rough stuff in my personal life, having 2k to drop on hobby stuff (which I have not had money for in over a year) would certainly be a boost.

But I'd suggest asking your local hobby stores if they're planning on running tournaments/game days soon. Co-ordinate with them, sink your vouchers into buying stuff from GW that can be used as prizes, share the fun out.

First off, sorry to hear about your troubles. Went through a similar period, I called it my Twenties. Things get better.

Not sure anyone but a gamer would understand why this is frustrating. I don't buy from GW b/c of the way they've treated FLGSes & players over the years. The fact this generous gift locks me in where I can't return the vouchers or even give them away makes this uneasy relationship with GW just a bit unhappier.

Eventually, I will figure out what to do with the vouchers. Going to need to think for a long time about what this gift means about how people look at me.

It means they REALLY like you and see you enjoying a hobby that they know is expensive and thus they've chosen to get you vouchers as they really don't know their marines from their orks.

Also check the redeem date; you don't have to spend it all now and if they last a few months/year then you've got plenty of time to decide (just be DARN sure you do use them/trade them/whatever)

Technically GW could get them to FW. Problem being it would involve manual work, maybe some legal hassle etc(having to verify you are true owner of both accounts) etc etc etc. Seems it's literally easier to send stuff for free than accept payment if it's special thing not supported by their system(true story. I ran into situation where I asked if it would be possible to buy replacement part I had lost. FW told they don't do individual part sale as their system isn't set up for it so declined my offer to pay for it(rather generous price I figured. 20€ for single head) but due to situations decided send one for free instead out of sympathy!).

Not to beat a dead horse...

Today, I filed articles of incorporation for a new company.

Not that I will have any time for the next year, but now I want to use those gift vouchers. Put up a photo with a mountain of crap then announce happy holidays I'm back in business.

Help me decide: Dark Angels or Blood Angels? I would be happy with either, how do the Codexes compare?

Visually, Blood Angels seem to have more options with generally newer kits. Codex-wise, I think they're pretty similar.

Good on you for owning the situation!

I'd actually suggest looking at terrain as someone else suggested above. One of the reasons most people don't bother with the (actually pretty good) terrain kits GW sell is that there often isn't the budget outside of an army for it. for that amount you could make a pretty damn awesome table with good terrain pieces for days.

On the subject of BA vs DA, it really depends on the style you're going for, and what you like to paint. They both finally have access to most of the codex toys, BA will lean choppy while DA will usually lean heavy on the plasma shooting.

I'd like to see the 'mountain of crap' picture in this thread though!

Heh. Baneblades are not as powerful as some might want to think they are.

After sleeping on it, playing an Imperial army isn't very appealing.

I could just spend the money on 3 really OP armies and go on a campaign to become the ultimate TFG. Or maybe rent myself out to take on TFGs in local stores on the East Coast, become a miniature merc.
