completely freak out and get paralyzed over the amount of choice and options available? Other than the standard bearer, I have no idea what to do with the kit. Plasma gun? Yeah! Sniper? Hell yeah! Medi-pak? Of course! Vox? You can't be guard without one! So yeah, I basically want to use every single bit in this box.

I did snag a couple packs of monopose Cadians. I might need to do some surgery on them to get the most out of this command box.

I looked at the sprues online and I did like the sort of options I saw. There's a fair number of "personality improvement" options. I think it's also the only source of plastic melta, sniper, and plasma special weapons, aren't they? Plasma and bolt pistols, too.

Interesting choice of pose on the slung lasgun arm - strap kind of comes off the top, like it's hooked around the scope mount.

Buying a box of multi-part Guardsmen is the better way to go to maximise the set. There's just so many options in the kit and doing surgery on monopose figures seems like not the best use of time. You can genuinely make about 16 totally unique models or something out of the parts in that kit if you combine it with a Guardsman box (give or take a couple of additions). Its amazing. It is also the only source of plastic special weapons etc. I am not a fan of the dated metal plasma/melta/sniper figures, so the options in the CS box are definitely preferable.

Yeah, that metal set was the pits. Wonky posture on everyone except the Standard guy I think. The Standard guy kept falling over, though...

I ended up just getting another box of Guardsmen on this trip over; I'm waiting for their resupply to come in before I can do a box of Command.

I learned today that this plastic kit is nearly a decade old, too, which isn't a great feeling.

Good suggestion on the regular guard kit. I've got a couple sprues from the "Get Started" kit I could use to max out all the command kit. I may end up lacking in plain old lasgun guardsmen though, but at least there are cheaper options for them.

This is exactly what happened to me! Ended up with a ton of Sergeants/Officers and Special Weapons guys and not a whole lot of basic lasgun infantry...

I remember when this squad came out. Good times!

There was a point where I ended up with so many sergeants, voxes, flamers, and grenades that I did suffer a shortage of basic infantry, so it really pays off to plan a head. How many guardsmen do you need? How many of those weapons do you _really_ need? How many officers do you need? [I always end up with waaaayyy to many officers.]

You _will_ want a Plasmagun.
You may want a heavy flamer.
You realistically don't want a Vox.
Unless you're me, you probably don't want a sniper either.
You may want an officer, but if you've already got 5 or so, you won't want more of them either.
You do want a Sergeant, but actually, he's better with a boltgun than anything else.
You don't want a medic, because they're silly overcosted.
You may want a standard.

There are a lot of options, but really, are any of them going to see the table?

Definitely good points. At this point I'm still in the early stages of building out my Guard army, so I'm leaning towards more 'fancy dudes' and then pick up some extra monopose to fill out the squads.

So far I'm thinking I definitely want
1 or 2 officers (I have none so far)
Plasma (cuz plasma)
Melta (cuz moar specials)
Standard (cuz holy hell it looks awesome)

I lean more towards fluffy style than competitive, so I plan on doing a medi-pak even though it's 'sub-par' in terms of equipment options.
Same with sniper rifles - at some point I fully intend on running a command squad with four snipers, so it's getting built.

I may skip on the Vox - I've got two from my last squad build, and have two more in the other squad kit I can make. I want a few around, but five's probably more than I need.

The problem is I also want multiple versions of many of these. For example, officers - I'd love to have one with just a laspistol as bare bones commander, but also one with just bolter, another one for close combat (plasma P and power something), and so on. And that's just for playing, then there's all the "I want to build this because it would look awesome!" things as well.

Command Squads with lots of specials are bad at everything, but being inflitrated with the dagger.

4 Special Weapon dudes with the exact same squishyness as regular guardsmen but whom cost more points per model are just a no brainer for your opponent to casually sweep off the table turn one.

I run my command squads with one banner, and one sniper for the least possible incentive to be shot at but still a tabletop function.

Beware the command squad trap.

like others have said avoid the command squad, it aint worth it. what IS worth it though in that kit is parts that allows you to make the company commander and personalise your troop sergants.

Heres what i have done for my 30 man core.

3 boxes of easy build dudes, 1 box of 10 troops, 1 command squad box and one heavy wep team box.

The easy builds is half your 10 man unit. the 6th man(standard or vox) + the 7th man (special wep) both comes from the 10 man box(exept plasma cuz that gun is not included in the kit, make your own or find from 3rd party), 2 sergants from the 10 mans box, 1 company commander + sergant from the command box and the last 2 models is the heavy wep team(and there is 3 teams in 1 box).

Overall this way is allso mutch cheaper then bying 3 boxes of 10 troops, and you get 6 basic trooper bodys as leftovers plus a cheap HQ that can issue orders.
