Ok, this sounds a bit odd, since measurements of radioactive isotopes over 1000 times higher than normal do not spring up out of the ground. Usually.

1000 times is not normal.

That's not a spike in radon or some more natural event.

Probably some leak in waste process or something. Not nuclear reactor failure due to lack of OTHER radioactive stuff so that's good at least.

Yeah, that's a bit fishy.

But that part of the world has a track record for serious nuclear accidents and just plain carelessness. Chernobyl and Kyshtym are the most famous. But there have been others, such as Lake Karachay, Techa River, Kramatorsk, and Andreev Bay.

To be fair, all of those were Soviet era events, when the Russians weren't concerned about little things like safety, reliability, or pollution. If this current spike is from a major accident, it could be the first major nuclear accident in the post Soviet era.

Nothing happened. There was no nuclear reactor, there was no accident and there most certainly isn't any kind of military experiment. Also, there are no clean-up crews at work there. All the activity at the site can be explained by the fact that it suddenly became a very popular destination for state-sponsored holidays. Very nice nature over there in the Urals you see? Now move along comrades.

It is funny though they called a place this far from sea 'mayak', which means 'lighthouse'. At least I guess it is glowing like one now

Ruthenium has a short half life, so whatever happened it was recent.

It does also mean that unless other elements are found this is not major problem.

Also a thousand time normal levels sounds a lot, but probably isn't as normal levels are minute.

I love how the Russian story went from there being no radiation, to admitting there was a lot of radiation but insisting it had nothing to do with the nuclear facility the radiation is right next to.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Standard Russian PR MO.
1) Deny anything happened
2) Agree said thing did happen was nothing to do with them
3) Admit you were involved, but it was totally innocent and any negative connotations are western media bias/politically driven. Ask Russia Today and their totally independent news
4) Wait for irrefutable, overwhelming evidence then do something to distract the media away from the story and complain how everyone hates Russia.

That is not true. Well, maybe in the past, but not anymore today. And even if we deny things, what is the big deal? The West and its so called allies do it all the time as well, but you never hear stories in the media about that! Bias much? Why not just report on something positive? Like the upcoming football world championship hosted by Russia? But no, of course you will never hear a positive story about Russia in the russophobic Western media... hypocrites.

They're just desperate for the bad ol' days when Russia was "THE EBBIL EMPIRE".

Personally, as a serviceman, I was glad to the end of the Cold War. That meant that I didn't have to fights hordes of Soviet T-72s, T-64s, and T-80s, at three to one odds, on an irradiated German battlefield.

Ah, but that is the plan you see? Trick the liberasts into thinking you are predictable only to then suddenly deviate from that routine when it really matters, gaining the element of surprise. It is a simple application of maskirovka. Always make sure to build up multiple layers of deception. The denial is a deception, but the deception is itself a deception on a higher level, if you get what I mean.
