How do? Me again with another Total NooB question.

I'm shortly to be ordering some MDF terrain so I can run Necromunda campaigns from my flat.

I've more or less settled on just what I'm ordering (at least to start with), but looking at it it's all quite plain in aspect.

Does anyone have any tip or techniques for painting MDF terrain that'll help it pop? I want a visual feast of a board!

Make sure you seal it.

Don't use a lot of water in your paint, MDF can absorb it and expand. Another reason it's important to seal it.

Otherwise I'd check out videos like from The Terrain Tutor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C7A_ioUFYs&t=260s

I've built/painted several Wild West MDF buildings, some pirate ships, dice towers and a few other modern buildings as well.

I've had great luck with cheap craft paints (acrylics) which I use for a lot of terrain (and even on figures, GASP!). Recently also got and used some Tim Holtz Distressed Stains: https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=tim+holtz+distress+stain&tag=mh0b-20&index=aps&hvadid=77653012610101&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_1g2y5vxjlc_e

I liked the results from these. I've not sealed the buildings prior to painting and never had any real warping problems. One issue I did note was any glue which seeped out onto the surface from between the joins is pretty noticeable once painted, so clean assembly is important. This is more for the stains than regular paint. Another potential issue is the dark/burnt edges from the laser cutting can take several coats of paint to really cover and don't stain well.

Seal, seal, seal. All six sides! And get it thick enough!

Last time I did MDF terrain, it was ~19mm thick sheets. I used, if memory from 2010 serves, spray adhesive to attach foamcore. It was the foamcore that did most of the terrain-hosting.

Sand and trim pieces to make sure they fit snugly. Pre fit pieces together before gluing. I use Wood Glue or Tacky glue to assemble. Masking tape can help hold pieces together when the glue is drying, Wipe off extra glue. I trimmed down a toothpick to get int the corners of building to remove extra glue.

I prime with a normal rattle-can, it may take 2 coats to get the wood to not show underneath.

Then use acrylics, normal cheap paints, to paint the rest.

Seal with a normal varnish, I do 2 coats to make sure.
