Ok. We all have it. The lead pile, the great unpainted grey mountain of shame, the stash etc... With some concern I have noticed that mine have grown considerably the last two years, despite selling off some stuff before moving to the city where I live now. I also have quite a few of what in the knitting world is known as UFOs (UnFinished Objects), projects that are half finished, models that have been undercoated, basecoated but never finished. I want my hobby to be about playing, building and painting, not about buying stuff and putting it in a closet.

So to get something done about this I have deviced a challenge for myself, and I thought it would be fun to post it here and see if someone else is interested to join me! The challenge have two parts. The Idea is that everyone that joins should post their goals in this thread

Paint to purchase ratio.
This is the ratio between how many models or miniature you have to finish painting before buying another. My goal is to decrease my stash and buy a lot less, so my ratio is five to one. I also build some scale models so I have the same rule for those. I also include miniatures from miniature heavy boardgames in to the miniature category. You set this ratio yourself. Since this challenge is about stashbusting I think a two to one ratio is a minimum goal. However, if you are new to the hobby or a veteran without a stash (which means that you probably also are a unicorn) a one to one ratio is OK.

Area 51 policy
Your Area 51 policy is how you deal with half finished stuff. Your UFOs. The goal is to reduce or limit the amount of UFOs you have. The rules for this goal you define yourself. I have a Kvissle letter tray from IKEA on my desk where I keep the miniatures that I have started the last two or three years. The rest of my collection is kept in a closet. For me the rule is that no new miniatures or projects can be started until all that is currently kept in the letter tray is finished. After that I will only keep one clearly defined and limited project on each of the five shelves in the letter tray. The project could be "five Rogue Trader era Space Marines" or "All the miniatures from the Blood Bowl Box" or "A unit of 20 Mantic zombies".
Your policy could just as well be that one UFO should be finished before you start another project or that you have a defined space in which your ongoing projects have to fit etc...

These are the two parts of the challenge. There are three more things that need to be dealt with in this challenge:

Selling stuff
How does selling stuff affect the challenge? This you have to decide for yourself. As this is about reducing the stuff in your stash a buy one for each two sold could be a good minimum. Here however a one to one ratio works for those with large stashes as well. For me selling stuff does not count towards new purchases at all.

The Kickstarter Menace
Well... Kickstarter says it is not a store. But we all know how true that is in this hobby. You have to define om you deal with Kickstarter during 2018. For me this is that all new Kickstarters count towards the total. So if I pledge for 10 miniatures that counts as buying 10 miniatures.

But this is the model of my dreams!
Ok. If you define it clearly, you can have something excepted from the rule. The items must be limited in some way or second hand. They can not be kickstarter exclusives. It could be a GW limited re release or made to order, if you specify what miniatures it is. For second hand miniatures they can not be bought online, unless it is something very uncommon and clearly specified. My exception is fifth edition and older WHFB bought at non gaming related flea markets and second hand. They must also be cheaper than eBay or miniature trade groups on eBay. If I buy something that fits this description I need to sell or give away as many miniatures as I have bought.

So? Any thoughts or comments? Anyone up for joining?

I'm up for this. My pile has fluctuated over the years, but I've reduced it over the last three. Time to tackle the unpainted pile and reduce spending. Luckily, Kickstarter isn't too much of problem for me. However, that still doesn't mean I'm not tempted to new stuff. But I like the idea of one in and two out. I'll probably end up doing another sell off soon, but Oldhammer is a particular weakness of mine. Oh and Epic!

Will you be keeping a wall of fame going month to month, so to speak?

And a wall of shame?

I drew a line after buying the indexes. Am now steadily working through unbuilt, which has created a growing pile of "to paint".

No selling off. No kickstarters.

My goal for the last few years has been to paint more then I bought. I’ve failed I think every year, but it’s been close. I’m at 59 painted to 71 bought for this year, with a month to go. Should paint 5 more, maybe a couple more, but not likely more then that. One of my other goals is to paint 1 mini a week. It’s an achievable rate, and helps churn through the pile of shame. While I’d like to cut into the stash, I just don’t paint fast enough. Pick up a starter box and I’m mostly screwed for the year. It’s the HH boxes dropping in November the last few years that really did me in for my goals.

I generally don’t have half finished projects. I do have stuff that’s been lingering in the primed pile for decades. But for the most part once the brushwork starts, I finish it off before moving on. Or keep in on hand and work in parallel with other projects. I spent a whole summer painting a drop pod like that.

I don’t count gifts as minis purchased. I generally don’t sell minis, but If I split a box with someone I’d not count the ones that I didn’t get. Although counting sales might incentivize me to lighten the load a bit.

This is a great idea - I'm trying to reduce my pile of shame - 72 painted minis/vehicles completed this year, maybe 80 by year end.

Of course, there has been a few purchases....but overall I think the backlog is coming down. Still hundreds to go though....

Some things that might help ...

If you've got friends in the same situation, why not arrange a group painting session? Even better, plan a special game in three month's time (or whenever you like) so you've got a goal to aim for. For example, we ran a challenge to paint a 2,000-point 40k army in four months; 500 points per month, with a game using all our painted models to that point at the end of each month, with a trip to Warhammer World to cap it all off.

If you want to paint something for a different game, consider doing two small forces rather than one big one - that way you're more likely to talk someone else into trying the game out.

As Andrew said above, group painting and planned gaming are both good motivators.

Also I find the more models I have out in front of me three less I will paint. So grab the two or three you want to get done this week and put the rest out of sight.

Another way I plan on staying motivated is to keep my half empty battlefoam trays out. Seeing the empty slots makes me want to fill them.

Good luck everyone!

I've been trying to paint my purchases each month, but I'm slowly building up a wall of shame that has now gotten to the point where I need to start painting considerably more than I buy. I like to paint whatever I feel like doing at that exact moment, and rarely sit with a single squad to finish. In my part-painted pile at the moment I have a Scion command squad, a datasmith, a commissar, 5 guardsmen, a SoB Exorcist, Cawl and an Ironstrider. When I finish something I add a new model to make a start on. Painting like this keeps me from the monotony of painting a stack of similar models.

After my December purchases I plan to halt buying for a couple of months to reduce the pile that's accumulating. I'm thinking of a total of points to paint before I make new purchases, but I have a stack of regular infantry to do and don't want to just end up painting all of my higher cost models and leaving the infantry. I'll have a think of some goals to do to bring down my unpainted model count.

I've been working through my backlog this past year. As others mentioned above, I've been doing painting clinics to help get a semi-regular schedule.

Also, I've been pulling out my models army by army and setting them in an area where they wont get disturbed (but are in a conspicuous place) so I can both get a sense of the overall paint scheme I have envisioned for the army and to put in the forefront of my mind what I need to be working on. By doing it army by army, I'm breaking the mountain down into more sizable chunks so I can tackle it one squad at a time - and it doesn't go away until I'm finished.

It never ends well

Hi,

I think i'm going to join in on this.

I'll have a paint to play ratio of 5 to 1, start new projects when I like with the Caveat of once started I must complete it.
The stash I have isn't to the point I want to sell any of it but some of the larger kits may go and the money used to buy something I don't mind carrying around.
Not once have I been tempted by a kickstarter. (although it's been a close call at times.)

I'll come back at another time with a list of my shame pile so I know how much I have left to do.

Thanks,
Knight.

I'm in.

Did one of these a few years ago, got quite a sizable portion of the backlog out of the way.

Naturally the backlog has grown exponentially since then. I've been clearing out a lot of stuff via local consignment cases and eBay, but I really suffer from new shiny syndrome to the point that a lot of projects lose steam before even getting started.

I'm going to focus on key pieces that have actual game value to me. Here's my gameplan.

Mission One- finish the Imperial Knight that came in Renegade. That I bought on release day and built the legs to. Some serious UFO going on there. I will start this today, and hope to get it basecoated in metallics this weekend!

Mission Two- paint the Phoenix from Kingdom Death. That would require gluing all those tiny little hands on it, but with the build section of the KD site finally up, that seems doable. Then we can play the game FINALLY, as all monsters and base survivors would be complete!

Bonus Mission- get rid of all the random historical kits I acquired, by any means necessary.

Secret Mission- Commit to how I want to build some of those Kingdom Death armor kits. Some armor sets I have enough to make 10 or so survivors in it. I have acquired a lot of kits!

Sidequest- continue trying to get demoable Wrath of Kings forces ready to actually play the game.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

I really don’t want to even try and work out what I have unpainted. I only really started painting properly this time last year then due to several stripping everything to change colour schemes and an extremely busy work schedule I have managed to be in a position where I have about 30 models (a few still need basing). My unpainted pile, including a couple of miniature heavy board games that I really want to paint I just have around 500-600 models to paint. On top of that I have several games coming from Kickstarter campaigns early next year (Shadows of Brinstone mine cart wave 2 is especially large).

My main aim for Christmas and Q1 is to finish my Walking Dead Kickstarter pledge, Necromunda base game, a dozen Batman / DC game models and make a small start on my new Genestealer Cult Army. If I can do this (or at least make a sizeable way through the goal) I will be happy. Have four days booked off work just before Christmas to start getting my painting moving again.

I am pretty relaxed (read - unreliable) when it comes to promises, but I like the idea. Count me in!

Paint to purchase ratio.
If every outstanding kickstarter delivers in the year 2018 I should be getting about 20 new miniatures. Considering that this (2017) year to date I've painted 48 miniatures and am somewhat confident that I will reach the goal of 50, a ratio of 3:1 should be a safe bet. 60 to paint, no more than 20 to get...

Area 51 policy
I prefer to keep as few UFOs as possible, but strange things happen and a few projects go on to span more than a year. If "a project" is defined as a single thematic entry/item, then I hope to finish 2018 in the same state as I am finishing 2017 - with two "projects" still in slow development. Splitting 60 miniatures into 12 months and 6 projects.

Selling stuff
It is highly improbable that I will be able to unload any stuff, but if this happens I will be very happy! But will not count these miniatures. After all, they have not been finished.

The Kickstarter Menace
As above - I will not distinguish how the miniature came through the door. If it is in - it is in!

But this is the model of my dreams!
These do indeed exists, such as most of the old metal wolfen line. But again, I'll not put them into the category of their own. If I get something extraordinary, I'll just try to paint three times more!

Lets spell it out:
10 for Alkemy
10 for Burrows and Badgers
10 for Kings of War
10 for Warpath/Deadzone
10 for Hordes
10 for Infinity

Is that OK for a goal to join?

2017: 50 of 50 planned; 2018: 80 of 60 planned; 2019: 75 of 75 planned

So, I kinda need this little challenge. I have several Armies that I need to get done that are in the UFO stage.
For Starters, I'm gonna set a PtP ratio of 1:1, that should set me on a great course to get several armies completed
The Area 51 policy is that I want to get my Praetors of Orpheus done this year so I can start teaching more people with a fully painted army.
Good Luck Everyone!

I don't have an unpainted pile.
I don't "do" KS as a rule.

I paint ALL the models I play with (no sea of grey plastic or unpainted metals for this little black duck. No paint, no play).
I don't buy more until the unpainted stuff is painted.

Discipline is what you lack.

What I do have is a shed of shame, where the gaming detritus of 30 years lives out its days. Armies for games I no longer play. Periodically, I thin the crud by giving away stuff if I can't sell it. This includes OOP and desirable "rare" stuff, too.
Especially if I have more than one of them.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

I'm going to give this a bash.

Over the last year I have continued to buy both direct from GW and from EBay without completing a single miniature. My shelf of shame has become a small room of shame and I have more UFO's than is decent.
I like to blame having 2 young children and running a business but in reality motivation has become huge problem when faced with a lead and plastic mountain.
This year I have cleared 4 shelves in my painting room and have vowed that no miniature, that isn't fully painted will touch them. I will only buy something if it is incredibly rare and fits a current collection or if it is limited release.
I will also sell of and unwanted or duplicate miniatures obtained from buying whole collections on Ebay

Aqshy, realm of Fire

I need to do this. I'm aiming to play more and am while it's not conducive to reducing the pile, I started Eldar as part of a slow-grow league. I did make a tally of the things I do use and I guess I could part with an army or the random miniatures I have lying around. As much as I enjoy painting them, I might sell my Death Guard as that's ~100 minis off the pile (40 poxwalkers, ) and I'm not having much fun playing them. Then again, I'm sitting on a heap of sylvaneth that I haven't touched, so they'll most likely hit ebay to allow AoS focus on Khorne. I think I might pare back the large armies to AoS: Blades of Khorne and 40k: Death Watch and Craftworlds.

To my credit, the mini purchasing did decrease significantly towards mid and the rest of 2017. There's a KS I'm waiting on in March that I lost interest in, so that'll hit ebay as will bits and bobs of armies I don't want.

There's a lot of UFOs floating round- everything I have is in various stages of completion. Literally each AoS and 40k army, some malifaux though that's mostly painted (pared back to 5 masters anyhow) and a bunch of random minis. In my defense, I had an incredibly busy 2017 including a few breaks from the hobby, several large personal matters and odd work hours.

This is where I'd put my signature...If I had one!

United King room or

I am in. I had a good 2017 in this respect with a 'no new model rule' wihich I stuck to until the Death Guard boxed set came along, which I supplemented with a bunch of DG characters, 2 tanks and a small swarm of bloat bloat drones from ebay.
Through the year I have made good progress on the DG set and purchases from previous years, namely the Nurgle getting started set, Chaos SM getting started, Genestealer Cult boxed set (GS only), terrrain and an unhioly pile of Ork boyz, characters, storm boyz and gunz.

So this year:
Paint to purchase: No new models. At all. Not terrain. Nothing, Complete cold turkey. This is the most important part for me. I have enough stuff BNIB or on sprue from ebay to satisfy and modeling urges I have. I also have a small collection of ebay metals which should satisfy any 'refurbishment' urges. I have unmade stuff for Orks, HH boxed set, FoW, terrain, Nurgle and various flavours of SM and the two Imperial Knights.
So no more models.

Area 51:
(1) Don't add to the pile by making models UPDATE: 9th Jan. I had a half finished Typhus which I finished assembling. See (3)(i).
(2) If I have to make models, only make once a current project is finished
(3) Complete my four main projects - to 'ok for the table' standard
(i) DG/nurlge army (very close to this) UPDATES: 9th Jan 17. Finished my Plague Burst Crawler
(ii) Chaos SM boxed set (very close to this)
(iii) GS cult (very close to this)
(iv) Terrain - building & boards (quite close) UPDATES 9th Jan 17. Finished the buildings.

Finally, my Orks. I have enough started boyz, characters, eltites and vehicles to keep me going for a few years. I guess the aim here is to keep chipping away with the aim of getting units to a basic tabletop standard.

If a model has already been made, it can be primed - so that is a couple of HH sets numerous other SM bits and peices,

Kickstarter: only did one - Maelstrom's edge. Still BNIB.
None for me - not been hooked.

Model of my dreams. Nope.

Good luck all!

Is it too late to join on this thing?

I do have a lot of grey plastic and bare metal to go through...

Paint to purchase ratio:
I already have a lot of mostly complete armies waiting to be painted, so i don't really "need" to buy anything for now, even if this is a ludicrous statement, considering how much I love buying new stuff... That said, one of the things that is sorely missing for most of my armies are transports. So for each full squad that I paint, I'm allowed to get my hands on a suitable transport for them, that I have to paint right away. I don't want to accumulate a pile of grey rhinos in a drawer somewhere... So, paint-to-purchase ratio should be at least 5:1.
I will try to work with a "reward" system where once an army is finished I can treat myself to something nice like a forgeworld unit...
I will keep a tally-sheet, and will put 2 euros aside per painted mini to buy new stuff and will limit myself to that, spending-wise. I just splurged on a lot of things (including a Spartan...), and I want to keep spending in check...

Area 51 policy:
I have a desk where i do my hobbying, it's relatively small and so I can't really hoard things on it, which is good. I try to participate in the monthly painting challenge, here on the site so that gives me at least one well-defined project each month.
I currently (this is going to be a scary list....) have in some unfinished state or another:
1) A Grey Knights army, it is easily finishable by going through the 25 marines that are left. They will get done in batches of five. SInce they can all deep strike I feel I don't need transports for them, although once the whole army is done, a Storm Raven could be added.
2) A Deathwatch army. First project is the Corvus Blackstar, then finish a whole kill team to put in it. The "one transport bought per finished squad" is applicable to this army.
3) An Alpha Legion 30k army: I have everything I need already for this, I just need to paint. They will be painted in squads, 5 or 10, and I already have transports for many of them. Once finished, I might treat myself to a Sicaran Venator.
4) A Tau army: it is a small force, I mostly have Fire Warriors to paint, once it's all done, there is a ghostkeel in it for me.
5) A 40k chaos army (deamons and CSM): I have several sub-projects in this, some of which are relatively easily reachable, like finishing up the khorne CSM that I have, and finishing the bases for the stuff i already have painted. The one transport per finished squad rule will be in effect here.
6) Eldar, orks, sisters of battle, inquisition: the first two are my kids' armies, but are part of the pile of unpainted things, so I'll try to make a dent in them, although I feel less pressure to do so. There are no purchases planned or foreseen for these armies.

Selling stuff
For now I don't plan on selling stuff, although I might unload some Chaos Marines at some point. Selling doesn't count for the ratio for me, but the money i gat back for selling stuff will go into the "hobby reserve".

The Kickstarter Menace
If I pledge, it counts as buying, although I don't plan to.

But this is the model of my dreams!
The only thing that I will exclude from this is if GW comes out with a nice Fulgrim.

First order of business: A squad of 30k Alpha legionnaires and their Rhino.

Just found this thread. Great idea! I've fallen way behind in my painting.

Paint to purchase ratio.
20:1 Yes, for every 20 models I finish I can buy one. My secret squirrel cache is large enough to make this workable, considering I'm sitting on 3 unpainted armies- Thousand Sons (plus some demons of Tzeench I haven't gotten around to yet), a small army of Girlymarines (Dark Imperium, plus I purchased 4 characters and a squad of Reivers), Death Guard (Dark Imperium. Might play, but definitely want to paint them)- in addition to the pile of old metal DA characters, plastic marines, and some new vehicles for them including a Land Raider and flyer I bought just before Xmas. There's also a Watch Master and a few more DW marines. I also have a bastion and a heap of the old craters to paint up. Oh, plus the Shadow Wars terrain and objective markers, and the crane.

Disclaimer- I am counting vehicles as 5 models, since they take about the same time to paint as a squad of troops, and I have a heap of them sitting in my grey pile of doom. That also means I have to paint 100 models to buy a vehicle.

I may have recently ordered a LR, some random bitz and a couple of the Terminatus upgrade sprues that are still in transit.. I'm sick, sick I tell you!

Area 51 policy
I don't have many UFOs. Currently there's the almost finish Corvus Deathstar staring down at me from the top shelf. I actually did some work on the remaining weapons tonight. I'm usually pretty good at finishing minis I start painting, but I have to add my DA Rhinos and existing LR to the UFO pile since they barely got past base coats.

Selling stuff?
I'm a hoarder, so I doubt I'll sell anything. If I do sell anything, yay, go me! I get money, that's enough for me. No effect on challenge.

The Kickstarter Menace
I don't really Kickstart, so I'm safe there.

Have a few thousand models to be done and my painters keep getting burnt out so looking to replace unpainted with painted ones from ebay.

Sad thing is I really enjoy making conversions but my painting is truly awful.

Have had a load of Kick-starters in recently and only a couple till to go - but they were all very model heavy.

I AM A MARINE PLAYER

"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."
Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos

"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001

A good idea - my goals for 2018:

PtP: Effectively for me the ratio is many thousands to zero - I have a 'no buying' embargo in place until I finish what I have
Area 51: No new projects until all already started are finished.
Selling: No selling this year - had a big clear out last year
Kickstarters: No Kickstarters this year in line with purchase policy.

I really have to be this restrictive as my painting progress for last year (which is my least favourite part of the hobby) was quite limited. I need to force myself to pick up the pace a little if I am ever to see some finished projects.

I find myself in a strange position in that, only recently having got back into Warhammer, my pile of shame is inherited from my 3rd edition self not from unconstrained purchasing.
However it is fair to say that I bought 45 models last year and only painted 23, so I have done nothing to reduce it!

PtP: 0.511:1 It would be nice to reverse this.
Area 51: I always paint before assembly so I'm not too bad at this, but I will commit to having no more than 5 UFOs in my airspace at one time.
Selling: I've never sold any of my models, but I will explore this as an avenue for freeing myself form some of the SM models that I don't want.
Kickstarter: I have never contributed to one before, so no reason to start now.
Purchasing policy: If I've wanted something over the course of multiple months then I will get it, no impulse buying. (This may go out the window if some of the old LOTR blisters go on made to order!)

My first order of business is to finish off the 5 Mortifactor scouts for Lost Patrol.
