Hey Dakka!

I first got into 40k through BFG - painting up ships when I was a kid and playing with my dad and uncles - and so I've always had a soft spot for that particular game. Also space battles are just cool.

But I've heard from a few sources that the rule set for BFG is complicated and unruly, and obviously more than a little out of date with current standards of tabletop gaming. As what I'm primarily looking for is a way to replicate space battles in the 40k setting, what do people think about appropriating the rules, templates, and even ship profiles from Star Trek: Attack Wing, and attributing it to BFG? It seems fitting (larger ships as opposed to the dog-fighting in Star Wars) and from my limited experience with ST:AW, its seemed like a pretty simple rule set.

Anyone with more experience in BFG or ST:AW have any comments? I want to see if this is viable before dropping cash on some old Chaos ships.

Cheers,
Jpog

What? No! The rules for BFG were some of the finest GW ever made, in my opinion. That game remains fantastic. I'd love to see GW re-release it with an updated alternate activations addition and just call it a day. Now, would I mind if they took a few inspirations from the Wings of Glory ruleset descendants like X-Wing and Attack Wing? Heck no! But BFG was pretty great as it was in my opinion.

100% agreed with argonak, the ruleset for ST:AW doesn't really fit and the templates require changing all the bases over to be useable. Have you had a look at full thrust? Rules are free and its pretty easy to get a handle on;

BFG does replicate what we see in the fluff - the ships fight much like navy vessels - need time to turn, broadsides are a thing etc. Its actually a very good game.

Not played Attack Wing but did not get on with X Wing although apparently the people demoing it got lots wrong.

Star Wars Armada and Dropfleet Commander are MUCH better rulesets for a game like BFG. I would recommend checking those out over A-Wing or X-Wing.

I would agree that Armada is a better fit. X-Wing/Attack Wing is better designed for highly manueverable fighters, and doesn’t handle capital ship combat all that well.

It never ends well
