Hi everyone im looking at starting up a death army in the new year. I'm completely new to AoS so don't have the slightest clue about what's good and what's not. So I'm looking for any advice on what would be a good start for this fledgling vampire as I begin my bloody crusade across the mortal realms!

What units do you like and want to use?

There are a few ways to make a Death army.

Fleash-Eater Courts: keept the allegiance and only take FCE units.

Nighthaunt: same

Mixed Death:
For your battleline, you should either take Zombies OR Skeletons, and then look for units that can buff them.
E.g. Corpse Cart for Zombies, Wight Kings for Skeletons. Necromancer works for both.
Add in units you like for your heavy hitters and heroes.

I personaly like the looks of the skeleton's the most so would probably be looking at a mixed army. As much as I may regret it once it comes painting time :p

I take it you don't realy mix zombies and skeleton's as they effectively fulfill the same role

Yes, as you want a few different support/buff units for Zombies and Skeletons, it's best to take either, not both.

Fair enough. What would you recommend as support besides the Wight king and necromancer? Or is it simply personal choice from there?
Also is there any benefit to sticking to units with the Deathratle key word or are you better off just going for a combined Death Alliance force?

It heavily depends on what units you're exactly plan on running.

A Wight King with Infernal Standard is a good option, though.
The standard gives an extra save for all your units. If you make him your general, he can further buff a DEATHRATTLE unit (like a massive Warrior unit or some Grave Guard) with +1 A.

A Necromancer can make a unit attack twice in one combat round.

A Vampire Lord general has also some good abilities, depending if he's on foot/mount or on a Zombie dragon.

A Mortis Enginge can be fun with the healing/damaging shock wave.

Sadly all Tomb Kings units lost the DEATHRATTLE keyword, but they are still DEATH units, so you could cherry pick what you like from them. Archers are still valid, as are catapults with a Necrotect nearby.

Deathrattle allegiance allows you to take Grave Guard and Black Knights as Battleline. It's probably not worth it, because you won't have any monsters available.

Cheers hanskrampf.

Would you recommend using a nefereta or manfred over a normal vampire lord?

At the moment the plan is somthimg along the lines of two big blocks of skeleton's, a smaller block for back field, a Wight king with standard, a necromancer and either a vampire lord (probably on a zombie dragon) or a mortach. Not to shore where to go from there.

This is really good info, Thanks Hanskrampf.

I 've been considering starting Death too (ShadeSpire Skeletons really helped).

How useful has that "vampire pirates" formation from Firestorm been?

there are some really good starter forces in the webstore, that blade of the blood queen force is really nice (have a soft spot for neferata, her novels were awesome)

I don't use Neferata nor Mannfred, so I'm not sure about them.
They seem good enough, even as generals, unlike Arkhan, whose Command Ability is a bit lacking.

The Wraith Fleet allegiance from Firestorm is okay-ish, but restricts you to Soulblight, Deathmages, Deathrattle and Nighthaunt. So unless you're planning a fast and heavy hitting army of vampires and ghosts, it's probably too much of a trade-in of missing units.

Just start on the skeletons. 40-man blobs of skeletons are ludicrously cheap for what they do. You'll want at least two of those, though three is better. Spear & shield. Convert a wight king with a banner, and get at least one necromancer.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Hmm, that does sound like a good way to start.

I could use the ShadeSpire skeletons as well.

Plus with the Medievil remaster coming up I can pump myself up for a Sir Daniel Fortesque hero and make a Zarrok necromancer to go with him.
