Off the shoulder of Orion

Welcome to game 12 in our ongoing campaign. With the initial Chaos uprising in Ameti hive broken, the remaining renegade forces are now attempting to withdraw from the hive into the surrounding agri-zones and wastelands.
The Imperial forces meanwhile plan to cut off and destroy as much of the enemy as they can to prevent the Chao forces re-forming outside of Ameti Hive.

The Imperial forces have set a series of road blocks to slow the Chaos retreat and force them to open battle.
The renegades need to smash their way clear of the trap and conserve as much of their fighting strength as they can.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Colonel Mordant cast his eye over the defences one last time. His units had been busy in the night setting up road blocks, tank traps and razor wire.
The cross roads he had deployed his Krieg forces across was one of the last routes out of the hive and any last fleeing heretic units would need to pass through here if they were to affect an escape.

But not if Mordant had any say in the matter.

Following the victory of the Basilica, mopping up operations were going on across the hive as chaos units were dug out and destroyed by the vengeful imperials.
The enemy could not be given the opportunity to reform and threaten the hive again. Their ability to wage war against the Imperium must be destroyed once and for all.
His subaltern approached, his vox unit headset pressed to one ear.

“Sir, advanced spotters report movement on the road to our north, estimated time to contact, 5 minutes”

Mordant straightened and unclipped his plasma pistol.

“Excellent. Our first catch of the day. Send word to all units with the usual conditions – no prisoners and no mercy. No chaos dog will live to see tomorrow”

In the distance, the first figures appeared in the pre-dawn gloom as they worked their way towards the Krieg defences.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The field of battle

The Krieg units are now on the offensive and have redeployed their quad mortars

Krieg Infantry take up firing positions in the ruins across the cross roads

Col. Mordant and his command team move to cover

The fell forces of chaos come into view – renegade Orgryns and cultists

Herds of Beastmen swell their ranks

Deluded civilian mobs, still under the sway of the dark powers join the throng

Some of these have infiltrated behind the Krieg lines and prepare to spring their trap

The Chaos forces spot the defenders and surge forwards with an unholy roar

Dakka dakka!

The Krieg Engineers spy the infiltrating civilians and move to intercept

They are joined by the Grenadiers

The civilians take heavy casualties from the imperial fire, but hold their ground

Meanwhile, the inhuman wave rolls forward in the face of the Imperial fire

Glory to the Dark Gods!

Sadly, for the beastmen, the Dark Gods were not listening and they are obliterated by an accurate quad gun barrage

I say, nice shot!

Khorne cultists move up under cover

From the ruins of the beastmen mob, a spawn emerges

Chaos hounds strain at the leash

Krieg Heavy weapons concentrate their fire on the Ogryn, to little effect

Chaos surges forward

The speed of the spawn defies reason – the Krieg squad is caught by surprise

Fire from the civilian mob cuts down two of the hated quad gun crew – but one remains

Fire for effect!

The spawn crashes into the Krieg line

One the right flank, Ogryn berserkers hammer into the defenders

A bad day out for the Krieg infantry

Their attacks unable to stop the rampaging Ogryn, the surviving Krieg fall back

Col Mordant moves to the balcony of a ruined building for a better line of sight. He blasts at the enemy with his plasma pistol

The quad guns continue their relentless shelling of the Chaos forces

The engineers flush out the civilian mob hiding to the rear

Seeing the threat to the front lines, the grenadiers head back to the main defences

Bring them down!

The engineers finish off the infiltrators in close combat

The main Krieg line cuts down the Khorne cultists as they break cover

Forward you scum!

The battle has descended into mayhem as the Krieg line is breached

Having finished off the unfortunate infantry squad they charged, the Ogryn berserkers move to outflank the Krieg right

The Chaos forces are now danger close to friendly units, making targeting difficult for the quad guns

The spawn is joined by the Ogryn beast handler and his hounds. The Krieg unit is quickly overwhelmed

Release the hounds! The fleeing survivors are brought down

Things are looking grim for the imperial side, with berserker Ogryns and spawn penetrating their defences and shrugging off their weapons

And then, deliverance - the quad guns drop every shell in a barrage directly on the Ogryn’s heads

Boom – the Ogryn and the hounds in the centre are obliterated

The two berserkers still on the right are subjected to the full focus of the heavy weapons in the command position

Col Mordant and his command team cut down the cultist leaders

The command position is still under dire threat, as the infantry weapons fail to stop the rampaging chaos creatures

The platoon command squad shoot down the beast handler with their plasma gun

The grenadier’s fire and the heavy weapons finally stop the Ogryn on the right flank

He’s behind you! Col Mordant saves his command team by slaying the spawn as it charges them from the shadows

A good day’s hunting
Mordant and his forces have wiped out the Chaos attack, holding the crossroads and preventing further chaos units from escaping

Imperial victory!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ogryn and spawn are tough! Plus, spawn are fast – that one beast managed to cut through my defensive line and would have chopped up the command unit too if it wasn’t for Mordant’s plasma pistol on overwatch
– a close run thing in the end. Strength 3 weapons don’t do much against those chaos beasties.

Great to have the quad guns back on the table (although the chaos team disagrees!). They saved the game by taking out the Ogryns in the centre just as they looked to be rolling up my forces – perfect rolls on the barrage to-hit dice.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mordant kicked the limp form of the spawn with his boot, keeping his pistol trained on it as he did so.

“filthy thing. Make sure it is burned with the others. Use the flamers to be sure”

He looked up to the heavy weapons teams on the parapets above.

“Ensure you keep you ammunition stocked up. Now the enemy line-breakers have failed, we can expect plenty of business throughout the day. We don’t want to miss any”

Saluting their officer, the weapons crews prepared their ammunition and hunkered down over their sights as the next ragged band of cultists staggered into view…

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Next game, out of the hive and into the wastelands. The Inquisition has identified a chaos witch of considerable power, along with their current hiding place – an abandoned bunker complex in the barren lands outside the hive.

Their mission is simple – terminate with extreme prejudice!

Excellent! Much appreciated for posting this. A very enjoyable read.

Run a whole lot of wfrp and other rpg's, play The Woods and Kill Team, gather and look mournfully at imperial guard knowing I'll never finish enough to use them on the tabletop

Thanks so much. I don't like video reports much, and there aren't many chances to get my batrep fix these days. The armies look great, especially the Khornites! Krieg artillery is the devil, I happen to know. Congrats to Col Mordant on a tidy bit of work.

I just want to take a moment and say thank you! Your reports are always a great read, and I personally prefer pictures and text to video, it's more work safe. Great read, and beautiful armies!

That was totally awesome! I love the special effects, painted armies and terrain, and very easy to follow report. You should definitely do more

Excellent narration, and awesome paints jobs for.... well everything! The terrain, the troops!
Although the explosions make me want to put a big 'Historical accuracy may vary in some places' sticker on this, but only for the lulz.
Bet the chaos players are gonna have a lot of after this.

Burn the heretic. Kill the mutant. Purge the unclean.

And remember, your trusty Flamer can do all three.

Wow, great report again. I love the well painted armies and the great pictures with special effects. I much prefer pictures and writing to videos. Please continue.

FYI, this is a 7th edition game I assume? Just want to keep the right rules in mind.

Thanks,
Duncan

P.S. So I am trying to catch up on this campaign. (2015?!?) And of course the old pictures are not there anymore. Is there a repository online of the old battle report pictures? Just read the first two riot games and would love to see them.

Thanks for the comments guys - makes posting these reports worth the effort!

Hi Vadersson. Yes, this game was done using 7th ed rules. We switched to 8th as soon as it was released, but I'm still several games behind with the reports.

Sadly, the Photobucket ransomware disaster wiped out all my old reports (there is a special place in hell reserved for Photobucket). Ideally I will go back and re-do the photos for this campaign at least, but I just need to find the time...

Amen, a pox on photobucket for their appalling behaviour! No worries Gordy, just happy to enjoy what you put up ;-)
