Due to how inexpensive a AM brigade can be put together, is it always the way to go?

I guess so... If I could be bothered with sentinels I might do it!
As an experiment, I tried to make the cheapest legal Brigade. I managed 639pts, so you can get 3 in a 2000pt list. That would be 30 commander points! Might be possible to go lower even.

There are many different ways to go with AM. It all depends on what models you have. I personally want to do an armored company. But sadly financing another 6 Leman Russes is not in my budget yet.

I find a Brigade quite doable at 1500 points, and I like Sentinels well enough... so yeah. I always go with a Brigade. Not a requirement, but I have a wide collection and I like to use stuff from all FOC's.

I've found it incredibly useful and easy to do. The only thing I consider to be "tax" units are a pair of Armoured Sentinels and they've even been moderately useful as mobile turrets or charge blockers. All the other FOC slots are filled with good stuff and a lot of it is very cheap points wise. Honestly the list I would've written if Brigades weren't a thing wouldn't be that much different from what I'm currently running so the benefits are absolutely worth it.

Brigades should be the default option for an AM list. There are some great lists that don't use one, but you need to have a very specific idea in mind to justify leaving command points on the table, especially given how easily the IG can use them. Fast attack is the barest part of the cupboard for us, but sentinels are cheap (and do fun things like charge block, push back deep strikers, and contest objectives), hellhounds are punch, fast, and explode for lols, and even rough riders offer some punch.

There's no taxes IMO. If I don't want sentinels I just squeeze in hellhounds in place of them, More expensive yes, but totally worth it, and a genuine threat your opponent has to deal with.
