Does anyone know a particular reason why we can do things like Vehicle Squadrons (1-3 instances of most vehicles as a single detachment slot) but not things that let us take multiple infantry (etc) instances per slot?

I remember platoons from way back when, but those are gone now.

Is it just because we have so many more troop slots, now?

Honestly, the old "multiple squads per platoon" used to confuse the hell out of me. Before I got hold of the likes of Army Builder, I was building my IG wrong as if they were like the Space Marines I was used to.

I think it's better that 1 slot = 10 standard infantry or 20-30 conscripts. Though I wouldn't minde if you could put 20 infantry in a single slot.

It never ends well

The idea that you could get an entire platoon in a single troops choice was only a kludge to allow an Imperial Guard army to fit into a single standard force organisation chart (which was designed around a Space Marine battle company, and could be an odd fit for anything else). With 7th and 8th editions allowing and encouraging multiple detachments, it's not necessary - just make each platoon a separate detachment.

The platoon system was a good way to get around the inflexible older force organisation chart. With multiple charts available, it's simpler to just treat the Guard like anything else.

Then begs the obvious question of why russess don' follow same logic.

And also makes naming of those detachements REALLY stupid. Battallion? That's platoon! Brigade is more like extended platoon/understrength company.

Yeah the FOCs are weirdly named - if someone finds a way to field an actual brigade on a 8x4 table in 28mm, good on you.

Good point on what the old platoon system was trying to do. I suppose this does let us have a bit more fluff organization with our units, come to think.

That vehicles still have this ability - outside of a few lighter ones that maybe should always be working together (Sentinels, for example) - is a little odd.
