I mean Very new. I have watched a few games, but never understood how to build an army. I know that I want to play Ariadna and I know that I want William Wallace after that I am lost/open. what is a fun yet competitive list?

I started with Ariadna Caledonian Sectoral myself (Scot werewolves got me). You can bring Wallace in both Vanilla Ariadna and Caledonian Sectoral, however imo he gives more of a boost to sectoral forces because he makes irregular troops regular. There are a few really good break downs on how to play and make Ariadna competitive on the infinity fourms from CB. Numbers and camo are Ariadna's specialty but you can tailor an elite force if you want to.

Don't get too used to the Infinity forums as they're closing those down in January, replacing them with a far less intuitive system.

Do you want to run a Sectorial(specialized list that allows for some cool stuff but makes your Caledonian stuff more available) or a Vanilla(in the case of Ariadna, this is going to restrict the number of Volunteers you can have to 2) list?

If you're just looking for some purchase ideas and a list, here you go:
Caledonian Highlander Army
──────────────────────────────────────────────────

7
CALEDONIAN MORMAER Lieutenant (X Visor) T2 Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 33)
HIGHLANDER GREY T2 Rifle, 2 Light Shotguns, Grenades, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, CCW. (0 | 33)
VOLUNTEER Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 8)
VOLUNTEER Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 8)
VOLUNTEER Paramedic (Medikit) Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
WALLACE Combi Rifle + Light Flamethrower, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, EXP CCW. (0 | 35)
WULVER T2 Rifle, Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 33)

0 SWC | 160 Points

Open in Infinity Army

I've left 40 points of wiggle room but otherwise it is two items:
The new Caledonian Highlander Starter Pack
William Wallace

From there, I'd suggest at least one of the Volunteers boxed sets, the Highlander Rifles box, and a few other bits and bobs that catch your fancy.

I wouldn't mind going a little more specialized, but I wouldn't mind two list one for friend play and one for tourneys. thank you for the help.

A: The list that you are currently playing. Nobody makes a list that they know won't be fun. It is possible to make a terrible list, but it takes some effort.

Play with the Infinity Army Builder. https://infinitythegame.com/resources/tools/infinityarmy There is a version for Android too, and a downloadable version.

Have you visited the Infinity Web Page? Here http://infinitythegame.com/ for your convenience. Go to the downloads section https://infinitythegame.com/resources/downloads and get everything you need (The rulebooks N3 and Human Sphere, the Quick Starter Rules, the ITS stuff, which includes a lot of missions to play in addition to tournament rules, and whatever else catches your eye.)

Kan's advice is a good starting point. You'll want to play small forces, say ~100-150 points, while you learn the game. Once you've done that, then you'll have a much better understanding of how to make an Army list and can better decide how to expand. Remember that getting minis for your army simoply because you like them is as valid a 'list-building' strategy as any other... almost all of the time.

Thing about lists: There is no One True List in this game. I have yet to meet a player who likes to play the same list repeatedly.

There are some useful bits on the official forums, but as noted, not for long. There are some good articles here too, http://data-sphere.net tacticas and such.

300 pt all Bolts NCA list.

Bam, terrible list with no effort.

Honestly, when you're just starting to play? I say throw points out of the window.
I usually have someone take lists that start off like this:
Caledonian Highlander Army
──────────────────────────────────────────────────

6
VOLUNTEER Paramedic (Medikit) Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
VOLUNTEER Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 8)
VOLUNTEER Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 8)
VOLUNTEER Chain Rifle, Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 6)
VOLUNTEER Light Shotgun, Light Grenade Launcher / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 10)
CALEDONIAN MORMAER Lieutenant (X Visor) T2 Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 33)

0.5 SWC | 75 Points

Open in Infinity Army

This will let you get introduced to the concepts of:
Link Teams
Lieutenants
Template weapons
Coordinated Orders
etc

Then, the next game you bring in:
Caledonian Highlander Army
──────────────────────────────────────────────────

8
VOLUNTEER Paramedic (Medikit) Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
VOLUNTEER Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 8)
VOLUNTEER Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 8)
VOLUNTEER Chain Rifle, Light Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 6)
VOLUNTEER Light Shotgun, Light Grenade Launcher / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 10)
CALEDONIAN MORMAER Lieutenant (X Visor) T2 Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 33)
WULVER T2 Rifle, Grenades / Pistol, AP CCW. (0 | 33)
WALLACE Combi Rifle + Light Flamethrower, Smoke Grenades / Pistol, EXP CCW. (0 | 35)

0.5 SWC | 143 Points

Open in Infinity Army

It lets you continue to understand your Link Team, adds in the Warbands and some of the special rules associated with them.
Play with those two lists for a few games and it starts to all make sense and be exceptionally easy to comprehend.
Next set of games?
Add in some stuff with Camouflage and Hiding/Marker states and get that under your belt.
Etc
Etc
Etc

Lists, of course, can be altered based upon what you're fielding as an army but that's the jist. I feel it is much more accessible than the way that CB has you do lists for demo games personally.

Absolute madman.

It's easy to make a terrible list. One of more common mistakes should be over investing into elites and not enough stable orders to run them.

Ehhh...agree/disagree on this one.

It's a case by case basis. Sectorials are infamous for not being able to do this properly(see Bolt heavy lists for NCA--there's not really an "effective" way to run them thanks to bloat) but it often will come down to try out what you like and roll from there.

If a beginner knows how to abuse a cheap irregular link team to fuel more expensive models, I expect that he'll be elbowing with more competitive players in no time.

As for effective running, it's for the best that new player experiments and learns at his own pace.

Nope. You guys are wrong. Just. Plain. Wrong. it does take some work to make such a list. Under the spoiler. Sad thing: it is playable and can possible be a winning list in the Biotechvore mission.

This is excellent advice, "... it's for the best that [a] new player experiments and learns at his own pace. "

The nature of infinity is that sub-par units can become game winning units depending on the demands of the mission. Infinity is very mission focused so ultimately you need to make new lists for the missions you will face. The NCA locust is looked down on for being subpar for its cost but it provides the NCA with a toolbox unit they otherwise lack and that can win you missions in which you need a toolbox unit.

While the old official infinity forum is going to close down, the new official infinity forum is already up and running. You can ask your fellow Ariadna players what are good units to collect to start the Caledonian Sectorial here:

The more you need to put emphasis on special criteria, the more the unit feels that it cannot stand on its own. It's nice that it can be useful, but it seems very week argument. Certain units, especially skirmishers, have no such problems.

Critical system gives even the most icky/vanilla profile in the game a chance to shine. If that's enough incentive for some players that's that.

Infinity has an unofficial catch phrase of sorts: It's not your list; it's you.

There are a few things to consider, but Infinity is really more about how you play than what you play.

You can have a stupid list though; consider these:

Note the rules; SWC, you need one Lt and a hacker to bring REM's.
At least 10 orders.
Have a variety of specialists.
Have weapons for each range band (at least long and short range).
Preferably have some MSV, definitely have something to deal with camo.
Have something to deal with HI and TAGS.
Make sure you can play the mission, you are supposed to know the mission (says so in the rules) when making your list.
Finally; keep in mind that every model you take makes other models worth more (or less); because those models either work well with what you have, are redundant (some redundancy is good) or will fill a gap/weakness in your list. For example: if you only have short range weapons (like rifles) then long range weapons become worth more in your list, because it stops you from being out ranged.

Which was more or less true in N2, but is far from the truth now.

If you want a more accurate one?

Yeah, you're supposed to know the mission but you can't build strictly for the mission and for what your opponents might be bringing.
You can keep trying to pretend that you scored some kind of "Gotcha!" but the "It's not your list, it's you" garbage was a fairly hostile movement on the official Infinity forums. Some people would take time out to explain that it's not necessarily "You're bad" but rather explain that certain setups needed to be experimented with rather than just thrown together ad hoc.

In general though, it was a way of saying "Get good scrub".

I'd just field whatever you like to start with. Chances are youre going to be slaughtered while learning to best handle whatever you picked for a while. Then just make changes to try cover your weaknesses abit more. Atleast thats what I try to do.

If youre playing ITS your armies going to be at the mercy of whatever the mission is anyway. I dont play ITS for that reason.

@kanluen

All bolt list is being done, and can be fun and competitive. Although they will certainly struggle with some missions. Like any one demensional list.

As far as Caledonia the starter and a camerroneon or two is a good start. The T2 Sniper is a solid and deadly choice.
