Subject: Real life characters who are so caricatural that they could very well be from the 41st Millenium
Title says all. List some real world characters who should belong to 40k instead, and say what faction and role they would have.
I'll start. General Luigi Cadorna, chief of staff of the Italian army during World War One, aka the quintessential incompetent callous and ruthless WW1 commander.
Nicknamed "the Butcher", his specialty was repeated frontal attacks of heavily entrenched and fortified positions, then once such attacks were inevitably repelled, blame the defeat on the lack of bravery of your men, proceed to execute some of them to bolster the morale of the rest. Then try again.
He did that on the infamous Battles of the Isonzo. For TWELVE TIMES, all repelled and without gaining any ground. "We failed the first 11 times, but hey, I have a good feeling this time."
Because of him the Italian army had the highest number of executions in the war, by far. He brought back the ancient roman practice of decimation, killing tenth soldiers (drawn randomly) in regiments which underperformed.
Once he was parading his troops in a town, one of the soldiers did something crazy: he saluted Cadorna with a cigarette in his mouth. Cadorna ordered the man to be beaten immediately with sticks. One of the local civilians, a rich guy, complained vocally that this was no way to treat your own troops. Cadorna answered that his troops were his to use as he saw fit, and had the soldier shot instead.
I'll conclude with a quote from him:
"For a brilliant attack you calculate how many men can the machine gun kill and you launch an attack with a superior amount of men: someone will get to the machine gun." - Luigi Cadorna in "Lettere"
For this and all the aforementioned reasons I think Cadorna belongs to the Imperial Guard, possibly commanding a Valhallan army.

Mad Jack Churchill, British Army Second World War.
A rather eccentric officer, known for playing the bagpipes during an assault, carrying a sword into battle and credited with the only recorded kill with a Longbow in WW2. "An officer without his sword is an officer ill equipped".
never in the field of human conflict, has so much been fired at so many, by so few.
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions. Loyal servant to the true emperor Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

Lieutenant General Sir Adrian Paul Ghislain Carton de Wiart[1] VC, KBE, CB, CMG, DSO (5 May 1880 – 5 June 1963) was a British Army officer born of Belgian and Irish parents, and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valour "in the face of the enemy" in various Commonwealth countries.[2] He served in the Boer War, First World War, and Second World War; was shot in the face, head, stomach, ankle, leg, hip, and ear; survived two plane crashes; tunnelled out of a prisoner-of-war camp; and tore off his own fingers when a doctor refused to amputate them. Describing his experiences in the First World War, he wrote, "Frankly I had enjoyed the war."[3]

Like many early WWII commanders, he wasn't promoted during war time.
I'm pretty certain North Korea is the closest we'll ever get to an Imperium on Earth.

Rasputin, Stalin, Goering, Macarther, Patton, Teddy Roosevelt...all crazily boisterous or charismatic individuals who would translate well to gaming. Lawrence of Arabia, etc.

George Custer? For refusing to use newer technology in favour of the sword and pistol (and carbine I guess )
If you mention second edition 40k I will find you, and I will bore you to tears talking about how "things were better in my day, let me tell ya..." Might even do it if you mention 4th/5th/6th WHFB

Not a general or famous leader, but there's an Iraqi called Abu Azrael who fought the US in the invasion and now fights ISIS in a Shia militia. The guy's huge and muscled, bald, bearded and usually carries an AKM, a RPG launcher with a few rockets and an axe. Inspiring to the men on his side and absolutely terrifying to those on the other side.
He'd make a good stand-in for an Imperial Guard hero like Marbo or Harker...

Aleksandr Matrosov. A 19 year old soldier who blocked a German machine gun with his body so that his unit could advance:
On 22 February 1943, in the battle to recapture village of Chernushki, near Velikiye Luki, currently in Loknyansky District, Pskov Oblast, the Soviet forces struggled to take a German heavy machine-gun, housed within a concrete pillbox, which blocked the route to the village. It had already claimed the lives of many of the Russian troops. Matrosov crept up to the pillbox and released a burst of rounds into the slot in the pillbox. One round hit a mine inside, and the machine-gun temporarily fell silent. It restarted a few minutes later. At this point Matrosov physically pulled himself up and jammed his body into the slot, wholly blocking the fire at his comrades but clearly at the cost of his own life. This allowed his unit to advance and capture the pillbox and thereafter retake the village.
A great example to any soldier of the Imperial Guard.

That one made me laugh, some of the stories from the British army over the years are insane.

There's more to Göring than that. Before the Hitler-Coup Göring was actually the brain behind the NSDAP. But during that Coup he was shot into his best parts and became a drug-addict because of that, making him as crazy as he's usually portrayed today.
Don't get me wrong, he was a stupid Nazi before, but not that mad as he became then .

He was a unpopular fighter ace as well in WW!
Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix - A Vandire who succeeded
He took control over the entire Roman Republic "to save it from itself" and in the process and aftermath destroyed all of his enemies and others besides....
Sulla immediately proscribed eighty persons without communicating with any magistrate. As this caused a general murmur, he let one day pass, and then proscribed two hundred and twenty more, and again on the third day as many. In an harangue to the people, he said, with reference to these measures, that he had proscribed all he could think of, and as to those who now escaped his memory, he would proscribe them at some future time
Once he had achieved all that he sought and put Rome on the course he wanted he retired to spend his last few years in total decadence with his 5th wife (a alert young divorcee) and his male lover (a once renowned actor). He also had a brilliant epitaph
No friend ever served me, and no enemy ever wronged me, whom I have not repaid in full
Rather than saving the republic he doomed it to a series of civil wars and paved the way for Caesar and Augustus and all of his reforms were almost immediately in turn reformed.

That was done. Lord Solar Macharius.
Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

In college I volunteered at the national Braille press repairing their printing presses and one of the frequent visitors/ semi directors of the place was this man: http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/SELF.html that's him on the cover.
This is his book, a self defense manual for the blind, because apparently at some point someone was dumb enough to attack a six foot six man wearing two eyepatches with a steel hand and a gigantic German Shepard seeing eye dog. In it, he opines that the lack of including a kill command in standard seeing eye dog training is a sign of how soft and foolish modern society has become. The book covers cane combat, dog training, and how to grapple and find the eyes of an attacker by feel to even the odds.
He is the single most physically intimidating human being I have ever met in my life. Instantly you can tell that this man has seen death, spat in his face, and continued on his life supremely unimpressed.
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

He was a fanatical imperial general who never lost a battle he led because of his brilliant tactics and strategies. And he started his career as a recruit and worked his way up through all of the military ranks until he was the most accomplished general of his time. Yes, in real life.
Imperial Guard would like to have him.

Also Angry Marines are making a cameo: Alt-Right is so doomed.
