Here are all the Romans I own:

6 Optios
20 Praetorian Incl Command
20 Auxilliary Incl Command
12 Cavalry Incl Command
90 Legionaries Incl Command
20 Veterans Incl Command
3 Generals
1 Balista

Here's my "Early Imperial Roman List" Is it Legal-ish?

3x Heavy Cavalry (Elite) = 33
2x Legionaries (Elite) = 26
11x Legionaries= 110
2x Auxilliary (Elite) = 20
1x Fortified Camp = 6
1x Medium Artillery = 10

3x General (free?)

Total = 205

With the models given can you help me? All are individually based. Further any suggestions for other units? I don't have any archers? or Missile Cavalry (Yikes?)

Thanks you few...

Generals cost points depending on their quality and game size. You are also capped by the command rating of your army, EIR have a +5 rating so you can have many good commanders if you want. You could also give them negative unreliable and included traits to free up points.

You have too many legionaries as there is a max of 12 of them. The common troop types you are missing could replace them.

As you've noticed the main units you lack are skirmishers which are useful for protecting legionaries from missile fire and fighting in difficult terrain, medium infantry in case you need to fight over rough terrain and light cavalry for mobile skirmishing.

Wiki with sample army lists

In general when it comes to army building remember a group move can be a max of 6 units. Due to this the average corp is usually a max of 6 front line units like legionaries. If you want to 2 movement groups in a single corp then take a brilliant commander for the guaranteed 2 pips (The light troop skirmisher group is usually ignored for this as having a pip for it is less critical).

An easy way to build an army for EIR is to have a heavy infantry corp with legionaries for fighting head on, a medium infantry corp with auxiliary and bowmen for fighting in rough terrain and supporting the legionaries and lastly a cavalry corp to protect the flank or flank if they are able. As you get more experienced you can start mixing unit types like some of the lists in the wiki link do for a more efficient army.

@ Durecellrabbit: First of all, thank you for the very good response. It was a big help. I suspect that this NEW list (below) is not efficient or competitive, but is it legal? Again, I am using only the minis I currently have:

Early Imperial Romans:
Command Points 5+
Strategist Trajan

Commanders (19pts):
- 1x [Strategist (+2)] = 10 pts
- 1x [Brilliant (+2)] = 6 pts
- 1x [Competent (+1)] = 3 pts

Troops (181pts)
- 1x [Hvy Cav] = 9 pts
- 2x [Hvy Cav Elite] = 22 pts
- 6x [Hvy Swrds] = 66 pts
- 4x [Hvy Swrds Elite] = 52 pts
- 2x [Med Swrds Elite] = 20 pts
- 1x [Lt Artillery] = 6 pts
- 1x [Fortified Camp] = 6 pts

ORDER OF BATTLE:
1st Corp
- Competent Commander
- 1 Unit of Heavy Cavalry
- 2 Units of Heavy Cavalry Elite

2nd Corp
- Brilliant Commander
- 6 Units Heavy Swords
- 1 Unit Light Artillery

3rd Corp
- Strategist Commander
- 4 Units Heavy Swordsmen Elite
- 2 Units Medium Swordsmen Elite

Yup, your new list looks legal to me.

I just thought of something worth mentioning. There is a web based army builder if you don't already know it. It doesn't check your lists for you but does make it easier to type up and print out a list.
