So this Christmas' stupid big project will be...

A BFG fleet base! (Yay)

Damn thing is 15" across and I have a metric crapton of DFC Space Station, Pegasus chemical plant and electric plant bitz to detail it. It will dwarf any of my previous stations.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone seen rules for truly large bases like the ones in the BFG book?

Spoiler:

I can always call it a Blackstone with 3 attendant space stations but just wondering if anyone has tried it.

Also did GW ever make a space station similar to the 'official' one that looks like 4 cruisers jammed together? I've seen the wheel one but none like this.

That looks ace - love to see it on the table.

I vaguely recall an Imperial Space Station but FW may have done it - they did the Eldar one and the Tau one IIRC.

They made the Ramillies class and Blackstone and the Eldar Haven, never seen any other actual stations (there were small orbitals/defence platforms).

Is DFC, Dropfleet commander? I have been looking at that kit for use with BR ACTA, is it anygood? I have had a look at the sprue pics and finished builds but have never dealt with the company before and don't want to risk $80...

The Ramilies was enormous. It actually counted as five separate "ships" - the four arms and the central hub, although IIRC shields and turrets were shared. Something similar would be a good way to go about statting up a similarly large model.

Yeah it's the Drop Fleet Commander one.

I got mine from a 3rd party, the War Store I think, so all I can speak to is the model, not the service (and the game just changed owners too).

TONS of great bitz, antennas, solar panels, wheels, towers, really great kit. And one thing I really like is a lot of the big pieces have a smooth streamlined side and a detailed industrial side. So by flipping them you can either have a clean Tau/Eldar looking part or an industrial Imperial/Mechanicus looking one.

As for Space Stations, the official one was a standard wheel. Not a bad model by any measure but not really up to the usual 40k insanity.

The Damaclys (sp?) space fortress was a lot more gothic but that's its own animal.

Yeah that ugly old thing, now this is a station;

Do you think the DFC kit would look fitting for Babylon 5? And does it make lots of little stations or is it just one core with tons of extras?

Here let me google that for you

You get lets of small pieces you can assemble as you wish. The big disk (I think you get 2 of them) is divided into 1/4s so you can make a big wheel, 2 half wheels etc. Very flexible kit.

Among other things I used it to build my catamaran double hulled heavy cruisers.

Ah, cheers. I guess I am none too bright because I have looked at the box contents and sprue pics many times but could never decide whether one set makes all those stations or it was a series of variants.

Sigh... guess I am going to have to get myself one for Christmas now.

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Isn't mutually supporting our unhealthy spending habits what the season is all about?

Seriously it is a good kit

It's also one of the most heinous models FW ever produced. Mine still sits in its bags in a box in the cupboard, because I don't own the power tools necessary to assemble it without going insane. Think of the worst, most gappy, misaligned FW kit you've ever seen, and I guarantee the Ramilies is worse. Which is a shame, as it's truly a spectacular model when completed and fixed up.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

The biggest BFG space station I can think of is the Port Maw model made for a GW store (can't remember which one--in the US maybe)? It was featured in the 'Invasion' booklet, which provided rules and modelling ideas for boarding actions played out as 40K battles.

Unusually for BFG, it was treated as taking up physical space on the table, like a planet, rather than just a point marked by the flight stand. This was because the Port Maw terrain piece took up a fair chunk of the board... so any game involving it would be a bit like a 'low orbit' battle around the hangars.

BTW, Kid Kyoto, I also have that Star Trek space station kit and intend to do something BFGish with it someday... though in my case I'll probably just use the central section as the basis for a Ramilies, and save the arms for an Epic scale shield generator.

So far so good.

Attaching the arms is a pain in the butt, you basically need 3 hands, maybe 6. Finally after 2 tries and a ton of green stuff and glue I got them to stop drooping.

But it's very modular with 3 central hokey pucks. So you could easily leave off the arm section and just have the center with the cone and/or the bottom hanger.

Looks great! And to my mind, about the size a major BFG installation should be. I hope to see it finished.
