On November, as part of National Novel Writing Month, I embarked on a rather ambitious project to write a full-length Warhammer 40,000 gamebook, in the style of those old choose-your-own-adventure novels I enjoyed when I was a kid. You can download the end result via the link below, as well as a modifiable character sheet for my protagonist.

I welcome constructive criticism.

Space Hulk: A Warhammer 40,000 Gamebook

I also wrote an introduction, just to spark interest:

* * *

On the outskirts of the Elysian system, a space hulk drifts.

She was a mighty warship, once. Her flanks of adamantium are built to withstand a hail of torpedoes. Her turrets bristle with guns, each capable of laying waste to cities. Her crew was hand-picked among the most capable spacers the Imperium of Man had to offer.

None of this saved her from what she encountered in the warp.

Now her windows have gone as dark as the night. Her remaining guns lie still and her engines grow colder every hour. Vast fissures run along her black hull. Her dying comm systems repeat an automated distress call, over and over again, begging for rescue that is already far too late.

Most spacers know to steer clear of space hulks. Sure, rumors may abound of the vast wealth these ships carry, waiting only for an explorer bold enough to claim it. But who can tell what nameless horrors roam their silent halls?

Only a fool would dare to venture in this accursed place.

Your name is Vick Cortiz, and you are a fool.

You are not the first would-be space scavenger who believed they could strike gold and retire within a year. That is why you left your cozy commission in the Imperial Navy, full of youthful confidence that your spacefaring experience would make you more successful than most.

Of course, things are never that simple. You almost beggared yourself just to buy a run-down, barely spaceworthy pile of junk. Maintenance, fuel and crew wages alone ate through most of your meager earnings.

Four years and many space hulks later, you have stared death in the face a hundred times. Tyranids. Daemons. Mutants. Pirates. Rival scavengers. What do you have to show for it? Some scars, frequent nightmares, and a worsening drinking problem.

Perhaps fortune awaits in the next hulk.

That is what you keep telling yourself as you put on your void suit and holster your pistol.

Note: The main character (“you”) is intentionally written in a gender-neutral way and without any physical descriptors or romantic attachments. Until you choose to inhabit Vick Cortiz, their appearance is just as much of a blank state as their future.
