I just got my kids the two player battle box for Hanukkah and they're very excited to do some not-super-competitive Warmachine on family game night. I've always been a Russian/Soviet history buff, so I want to build a Khador force that's roughly equivalent, or a half step weaker, than the Cygnar and Cryx forces that my boys got in that box.

I'm not sure where to start though. The Khador wargroup starter box just has a caster and two jacks, not a caster, three jacks, and ten infantry like they have. Is it a good starting point or not? If not, what's a good beginner set of caster and jacks?

Also, I love the look of the winter guard rifleman, but I'm worried they'll be really overpowered compared to the infantry came in the two-player box. I'd rather be slightly weaker than slightly stronger, because especially against my eight year old, I plan to take a dive in 90% of games. Any suggestions for my first infantry unit?

if you dont really want to win, just do "stupid" moves, but winterguard (not rifle corps) are not very good, and those banes and stormgaurd are a lot tougher than they look. the rifle corps are imo significantly not as good as the either troop from the starter. (I have forces from all factions, and I see those guys regularly get slaughtered like jawas) kozlov his 2 heavies and a unit of rifle corps would point wise make your force less than theirs.

"Slaughtered like Jawas" is surprisingly descriptive. Thanks!

Is there a particular Khador infantry unit that would be roughly comparable to stormguard and banes? Thanks for your help! I'm new enough to this that I can't judge their usefulness by eyeballing it.

Awesome, thanks for the suggestion. And they look pretty cool from an aesthetic standpoint too.

my personal list against the starter is:
sorschaP
destroyer
juggernaught
ironfang pikes

I think you can do similar with the battlegroup and the same, there are of course other builds, but since you want to lose you can consider things like greylord ternions and some solos. but kids are smart and sneaky so be careful they dont get too good that you get stomped by them without trying to lose

I'd stick to Koslov and stay away from Sorscha personally. She's pretty monstrous vs Agithia or Maddox, IMO. IFP are definitely the 10 man equivalent, though another option would be Man O War Shocktroopers if you want to play into Khador's slow and sturdy style more. That's actually the unit that was in the old Khador/Menoth 2P box.

Those shock troopers look awesome, and I like the idea of playing up the slow-and-sturdy aspect of Khador. Thanks!

They're both awesome. But i do like how the shocktroopers for nicely into the axes-and-cannons theme of the Khador starter battlegroup. Ice-magic sledgehammers, while cool in their own right, don't have that going for them. Certainly not meant as a knock against the demo corps overall though.
