I mainly play Dark Angels, but I was wondering if anyone has had luck/fun with using small allied detachments of Grey Knights/ Deathwatch/ Legion of the Damned.

It feels like it would be fairly fluffy to have a squad or two to show up and help out more general chapter, and I was wondering if anyone has had much luck doing so. The thing I was worried about is that they would pull so many points away from my standard army it would be difficult to balance. I mainly just think it would be cool to have a corvus with a squad of deathwatch show up to help out with the Xenos menace.

I've been experimenting with having a points effective SM heavy support detachment supporting my 2,000 point guard list. They take up about 25% of the points. It's been widely regarded as a terrible idea, and that I should take more guardsmen.

That said, I can't see how it would be more of a good idea to include instead of basic SM, Deathwatch or Greyknights, widely regarded as two of the worst marine choices of this edition, to support space marines.

If guard are better than SM, and SM are better than elite SM, the logic seems simple.

For fluffy or narrative reasons? Go for it I think it's super cool. But as always with 'Super Cool' you are also likely pointing a loaded 45' at your foot.
