Hello,

I picked up a few Battletech mechs sized for 15mm scale, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for games with points and combined arms that would make for sound systems to use these miniatures with? I was looking for ideas outside of current & classic Battletech/Battletroops range of games, as I want to try something new.

Horizon Wars and Tomorrow War are both fairly solid 15mm systems. Both systems have combined arms elements but Horizon Wars has better mech rules IMO.

Yeah, mech attack is great for games of casual mech fighting, with a fun way of marking off damage that's unique for each weapon and a rules light version of the heat mechanic from Battletech, but also fun to use combined arms of vehicles and infantry.

I'd add also that the measurements in Mech Attack are actually designed for 15mm. I use them as-is for 10mm gaming with rebased mechwarrior clix and with doubled ranges with 28mm mega battles. It works great with combined arms.

Here's the link to it. It's only $6 bucks right now, but the
terrain pack is probably worth it for the expanded terrain rules.

If you plug "Mech Attack" into the search function at my blog (linked under this message) you'll find a wealth of posts about our experiences with the rules. I like simple rules that are also flavorful and Mech Attack has delivered that to me for the past 7 years or so.

Like you I'm not into the Classic "Battletech" game. I do enjoy their streamlined "Alpha Strike" rules, but it's a pretty high attrition game that really requires 8+ units or more per player to play well.

One other ruleset you might want to check out that's a bit chunkier but well regarded among 15mm fans is Gruntz 15mm.

It's got some similarities to warmachine, but not overly so. It's a more in-depth game that's been heavily playtested over the years. A bit more expensive then mech attack but not overly so. I've only read it though and not played it myself.

If you're like many of us who like the indie side of wargaming, you might end up trying and playing a variety of rule sets before you find the one that fits you best.

Thanks,

I think I'll also grab Horizon Wars and Tomorrow War to see how they play a little down the line' Although after reading the comments, I'm really sold on Mech Attack, especially for less than I tenner, there's not anything to lose if I don't enjoy it.

You're welcome!
If you've got any questions about Mech Attack let me know and I'd be happy to help out. I've attached a file below of mech stats to get you started. They're based on various Mechwarrior clix figures that we use. They're not perfectly cannon, but based mostly on the appearance of the mechs.

I have no experience with Horizon Wars, but have heard good things about it. On the other hand I've got very mixed feelings about Tomorrow's war which I was very excited about initially and tried a few times when it first came out. The rulebook is quite nice looking and I think there's a good game in there but it's hidden behind rather poor layout and a bizairre way of spreading the rules across various sections. If you're not great at deciphering rules it'd be a good idea to find someone who is or who already knows the game to teach you.

That said, there are a good number of folks that really like it and you want to give it a go, I've got a nice barely-used copy I'd be willing to part with for a very good price.

For some reason, it's telling me that your file doesn't exist every time I try to download it... :-(

Try Gruntz, which is setup so you can tailor units to fit your models:

http://www.gruntz.biz/

Future War Commander also allows you to customize your units. If you are familiar with Warmaster or Blitzkrieg Commander, this is similar.

Bought Mech Attack

Gave it a read through. Seems pretty good for the most part. A BGG review on it pointed out some issues (Cover and standing still gives no negatives)

Id be into it for sure if they had more weapons represented. Feels pretty slim Mostly just classified as Machine Gun, Laser, Rocket. There is a cannon in there but gun types are MIA

I come from HGB though so theres quite a few options there.

Yeah, it's pretty streamlined, but I would suggest that what some folks condider "issues" are actually very deliberate choices made by the author.

-Cover and standing still don't bring negatives because the game tries to have no tracking of status from phase to phase asside from damage. It's the same reason that all heat effects are dealt with in the turn they occur. It means you don't have to remember anything in your head, or have any tokens on the table and there's no need to erase anything once it's marked on the unit sheet.

-As for the abstraction of weapons types, It's also deliberate because there's only a few basic types of shapes that will work on a damage grid, and when dealing with a d10 there's only so much variance you can have within weapons without ending up with near-identical weapons or resorting to special rules, something the game tries to avoid as much as possible. As written it covers virtually all kinds of weapons that you might find in a game of Battletech. As someone who'se played the game quite a bit I'd say that there are 5 weapon types: Machine gun, Armor Piercing Machine Gun (feels quite different form MG in play, think AutoCannon), Missile, Cannon, Laser. There are also twin-linked lasers, but those feel more like a slight upgrade and not a separate weapon type whereas the difference between MG and AP MG is quite profound.

If you're used to HG then you may find Mech Attack a bit too simplistic, but I encourage you to play through it at least once and see how the writers choices for abstraction deliver a very fast-playing and (IMHO) very enjoyable game.

I will add also that the game as written is quite solid and can likely support all manner of house rules or additional classifications of weapons and units, it's just a matter of sacrificing some of the fast-play nature of the game.
