They don't seem to be in the codex, and I did not spot them being mentioned in the BRB - yet they are in the box. Do they have any function in this edition?

Codex: Soyuzki - A fluffy guidebook to my Astra Militarum subfaction. Now version 0.6!
Another way would be to simply slide the landraider sideways like a big slowed hovercraft full of eels. -pismakron

Not in codex, not in game. Just something you can put if you like look unless you play game where they matter. Alternatively maybe use that as count-as augur array.

Yeah, use them to model an augur array. Lots of upgrades got canned and we need to be... Creative.

Thanks, all - making sure I didn't miss some mission rule somewhere or something.

Dear GW: Please discard useless crap from the box set and give us back the damn accessories sprue.

Now they're the same as storage crates, tow ropes, extra spikes etc etc. Just something to add a bit more detail to your model

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

AM yeah they need help.

Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!

Martel - "Custodes are terrible in 8th. Good luck with them. They take all the problems of marines and multiply them."

"Lol, classic martel. 'I know it was strong enough to podium in the biggest tournament in the world but I refuse to acknowledge space marines are good because I can't win with them and it can't possibly be ME'."

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough.

This got me thinking. If I remembered rightly the spotlight is mounted on a sabre weapons battery base.

To the bookshelf, grab FW, Forces of the AM Index and sure enough there is an entry under the sabre weapons battery to give it a 'Defence Searchlight'. It adds 1 to hit rolls against one specified enemy unit within 48", line of sight applies.

So yes, they have a use just on a very specific FW model.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

That is a much bigger searchlight and it replaces the weapon.

I am sure it would be very easy to slap some rules legal weapons on, if you were inclined.

No, the rules say that the light replaces the weapon.

Any model may replace its twin heavy bolter with a twin lascannon, twin autocannon, a twin heavystubber or a defence searchlight.

Searchlights are count as mastercrafted lasguns.
Duh.

Is mastercrafted even a thing anymore?

I think they're a bit large and "busy" for the turret, so I'm kinda glad I can pass on them without missing something somewhere. In light of that Defense Searchlight, I might convert a few into those, or something. Likely just a future terrain bit!

All my tanks are kitted out with searchlights and smoke launchers, because they came with them by default last edition.

Yeah, that's what I almost did (last played in 4e). Smokes I'll keep though there aren't many places that look "smart" for those, I noticed. Searchlights were different from what I remember them looking like (though better than those 3e "spikey cones").
