Hi Dakkanauts

So, Ive Always wanted to do a cobra themed army since I'm an 80's kid and loved me some GI-joe back in the day. So..stupidly I've decided to start an IG army based on Cobra. Not all the miniatures are gonna be actual cobra characters (I have a Raging hereos general who fits no where in the Canon. But I'm gonna try to catch all the troop types and some of the iconic characters and color schemes that do exist. Ill have a cobra commander...a Destro....Major Blood.

First up I have a bunch of Steel legion. Well there's a under used grop of cobra solderc called the iron Grenadiers that worked for Destro.

So this is my attempt to recreate them

I am of course missing the sergeant cause I ran out. That will be rectified soon

The Last one is the IG with the girl who will be my CC. Madame Cobra(or some other terrible name)

Thoughts, Comments, Criticisms...let em come.

COBRAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

Ive actually put in an order for some mad robot stuff to get my sergeant but also cause they have all the parts I need to make a Destro and the body of Cobra commander

However the real find is is this

Found on shape ways. Those heads on regular guardsman with the right paint jobs.....perfection

I hope....

Some advice needed.

While I wait for parts to arrive I can paint my Leman Russ. I want to paint it to look like a Hiss.....but a Hiss is just a straight black tank with the cobra symbols and the 788 on the side.

Any thoughts on how I might paint a Leman Russ to be definitely cobra? Or do i just stick with the actual design and paint my tank black with the red markings

Thanks

I'd recommend doing something to the Russ to make it look more modern. Cobra always had a very hi tech look, whereas the Russ looks like it rolled out of the trenches of WW1. One of many uncompleted projects that I'm working on is a light tank styled after the look of a H.I.S.S., I'll see if I can get a few photos together and post them up.

I would use a Chimera body sitting high on Leman Russ treads with the Russ weapons mounted on it.

That would get closer to the H.I.S.S. Tank look but 40k style.

Cobra HISS:

FW grot tank treads, you can use 3/4 excluding the flat one;
https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/Grot-Tanks

IG taurox body with front truck like shave off; Taurox driver. Taurox gunner and chair in mini turret.

Marine Storm Talon or Nephilim Jetfighter cockpit.

Because I have like.....300 IG proxies from Raging heroes. I'm gonna paint these girls up as Crimson Guard.

The helmets are...close enough, The paint scheme will sell the rest of it

There is are 28mm/32mm HISS tank available via 3D printing somewhere - I've seen several copies in various threads. I would genuinely dump my entire 40K collection if someone released a proper 80's edition of GI Joe in 28/32mm.

I'll look it up when I get a chance.

I think you've captured the look really well. I love black and red color schemes, so I'm biased, but I think it all looks awesome.

One thing just occurred to me though: you could evoke the 80's comic book art style even more if you pushed the contrast higher, especially on the black parts. In the illustration you shared in your OP as well as the paint scheme for the TGitG miniatures you posted, the black areas are highlighted with a very blue-ish grey. That would be a good way to make them really pop.

That's a really good idea. Any recommendations on which GW paint might match the highlight color?

I don't know GW paints very well but I assume that the Space Wolves schemes have a suitably blue/grey. Maybe Russ Grey or Fenrisian Grey.

Hunting with the 13th

I came across this Cobra-themed army at a tourney a couple of year ago, which you may find inspirational. It had all of the characters (Destro, Major Blood, Baroness, Storm Shadow, Cobra Commander, Serpentor, etc), as well as many of the classic units.
Spoiler:

I only wish that I had snapped more photos of it.

Update 1/22

I purchased a bunch of cobra viper heads from Shapeways, They arrived and then I promptly throw them away cause i thought ht box was empty and I'm stupid. So, waiting for a new box to show.

However all my other pieces parts came in. I bought some German helmets from maximini and an going to add face masks to them. While they are great they look too small on a normal guardsman miniatures. So I'm looking at bodies from other companies. I got a load of stuff from Mad Robot miniatures and so Decided to make Destro.

His Iron Grenadiers look gives him a gold helmet, but the silver is too iconic

This is the Result

(I suck at photos..sorry)

I love how the design came out, but in looking again. the head is tooo Big. Like size of his torso Big....So I'm looking for slightly smaller bald heads out there

Thoughts Dakka?

Destro's head is fine.

The cartoon had the tendency to draw him like he had metallic skin and not a metal helmet.
