so since my first introduction i now have
1# imperial guard starter set with 3 sentinels and a Valkyrie + 10 extra guard
2# orks from aob with some extra orks
3#nurgle half of no know fear
4# first strike starter
5# 5 terminators and a dreadnought
ATM i am still having trouble deciding an army i still prefer guard models but for a new player it seems to be very expensive to build a viable army with that in mind can ii use my terms and dreadnought with the guard and primais from first strike as one army 2 divisions ?

also how are death guard for a new player im not a huge fan of the corrupted look but as i have a fair start on them are they good for 500-1000pt games for someone new

If you really LIKE guard, go with Imperial guard. it is kinda expensive due to the high model count etc. but going with something you love is more apt to be finished.

from what you HAVE, you've got the makings of a decent death guard army. that's a 7 man plague magine squad, 16 pox walkers, a Dreadnought (that you could use as a helbrute) and termiantors which would be used for blight lord termies.

You can indeed use any units together that share a common keyword, that is: Imperium. This means you can use Space Marines and Imperial Guard together. I have no idea if it will work well but it's completely legal.

Tip: if you really want to go with Imperial Guard, get the Baneblade-box (with a total of 8 variant tanks) and build the one that you like the most. I know what you're thinking: it looks expensive. However, in reality, it's pretty cheap moneywise if you want to build a 2000 point army. 400 to 500 points worth of other IG models costs more in money than a single super heavy tank. Not to mention, super heavy tanks are excellent on the table.

I wouldn't bother expanding your ork collection until the codex comes out in 2018

My advice is to stick to what is cheapest at first. Your first army will probably not be optimized or beautifully painted, so you might as well just get your feet wet with something that doesn't sting the wallet that much. That means anything you can get from starter sets, start collecting boxes or the odd deal. You could build up a decent size Death Guard or Primaris marine army fairly cheaply right now with a couple of the starter set armies and supplement them with the new Easy to Build kits.

Primaris marines would be very easy to get started with because they will not only be cheap and easy to build and paint, but they don't really have many options so you're relieved of the burden of trying to min/max your list. No conversions, no kitbashing, no fussing, just building the models as they come. Such an army would only be suitable for casual games, but that is a nice way to get going, anyway.

Death Guard would be a more well-rounded choice which you could easily expand on and customize later on, but they will be a bit harder to paint, and if you don't really like their aesthetic that's already one strike against them.

Dont listen to this dude, orks are deffinately getting a pirate ship in the next codex. You should build it now.

your mind

All of this could be used as a chaos army. corrupted imp guard. even the orks as yes cultists. use it as such and trade what you aren't in love with when you get the chance.
personally i hate primaris marines but someone out there will want to trade them for either more death guard stuff or for imp guard, especially unused tanks. go with the flow and you will win.

I disagree about starting with the cheap stuff. In the long run, that’s just cash sunk into stuff you are not going to want in the future. So while you might be spending less now, you end up wasting more when you do eventually get around to collecting the army you want. It’s an expensive hobby, but a deal is only worth it if you want the thing they are selling.

Embrace the army you want to play. It sounds like that is guard. Look for the deals that apply to your army. Second hand a/o 3rd party stuff can also help bring the cost down. You might have to start with lower point games, but as your collection slowly grows over time, you will get there.

You can use all the imperial stuff in the same detachment. The downside of that is you loose the chapter/regiment rules. You can field multiple detachments in the same army, and if each one is “pure” they can take advantage of their specific faction rules. Your marines could be buffed up to a small ally force with minimal effort.

If you have models you don’t want, you might be able to find someone to swap with/sell them to. Or use them to practice painting a/o cut apart for basing material.

Welcome to the hobby, and Dakka.

Thanks for all the answers I think I will keep going with guard my biggest concern is the couple
Of 500pt games I’ve played I got completely shredded by space wolves but I will keep collecting guard and space marines and might try and trade the others for more guard stuff I only play casual so making a comp list isn’t a big deal just want to have games last more the. The 5 turns it takes wolves to charge my men/vehicles and kill them in cc

Guard won't tend to do so well in small points games because other armies tend to have a bit of everything in all their choices, whereas guard units are very specialized. The space wolves player has assault, mobility and shooting, so he probably got to choose where and how to engage your small force.

Thanks again for all the advice this is a big help, i think i might buy another know no fear set keeping both pprimais and deathguard from it if i have worked out battlescribe correctly that will givee apprx 1000 pt army of each and will look to trade the orks and someo ther models for more guard. because i can use guards and marines then even if its not effective at least i can try some larger games. does anyone know why they sell 3 reivers in a set but battle scribe says you need a min of 5

The best thing to do is read about the various armies and sub-factions to see which grab your attention and fire the imagination. Give that one a go and see if you can enjoy playing it.
