I saw the CNN article when the news broke. Sounds like basically an ambush. It's a shame that it happened and that the suspect wasn't able to get some kind of help before this incident took place.

What I read was that the deputies were actually talking to the man through a locked bedroom door to end the stand-off. He then fired through the door with a high powered rifle. Other than that, I heard the guy had emotional issues, ran to be sheriff as a LIbertarian, lost, and was generally not right in the head.

It sounds to me like the cops were doing the right things and trying to de-escalate the situation. Not much to talk about there.

We could talk about the usual "High Powered Rifle Gun thread" but why bother wasting our time. We all know how it is going to end. We could also talk about mental illness and gun violence, but we all know how it is going to end.

Therefore, I will some up any further discussion with this....

My condolensces for the families of the deputies and wish those injured a swift and painless recovery.

It's depressing, but people want to read about that. A shooting like this is obviously more newsworthy, but it seems lots of people only care when they can use it to push a narrative.

A young man has been killed. Several other people are wounded. Mo matter how you look at it, this is a tragedy. I'd rather have seen the suspect being taken alive, then getting answers might've been easier, but with the situation as it was that may well have been impossible.

I hope the survivors recover and are able to move on with their lives, and that the family and friends of the deputy who was killed get the support they need in their time of grief.

Strange, isn't it? When police don't act like complete monsters, and actually serve the public instead of unnecessarily killing individuals, seizing their assets through civil forfeiture, or generally abusing their authority, then the public is pretty happy with them.

It is almost like people want their police to be civic-minded individuals rather than wannabe Rambos! It's crazy, because wannabe Rambos = FREEDOM! Or something.

There are definitely people around who have done both already. For some people it's more challenging because they feel (either consciously or subconsciously) that they are on a "team," but even then, there are people who have condemned both sides for doing crappy things.

Man. If this world where more than just black or white, and one could recognise theres a problem without that being instantly saw has a political statment and a generalisation of a whole group. Like... theres a problem with police violence... and with muslim radicalisation... but well, probably I'm crazy. Theres only what is wrong and what is right.

Given the context, I think my usual comment of "Clowns to the left of me, joker to the right [Here I am, stuck in the middle with Yoooouuuu...]" when describing current politics may be in somewhat poor taste.

Alternatively, there just isn't much to say about this incident. Wrongful use of force by the police is something that provokes discussion: what level of force is appropriate, how mistakes should be punished, whether or not the police are given too much unofficial immunity to prosecution, whether race is a factor in when wrongful force is used, etc. A random murder doesn't have anything to say about it besides "yep, that was wrong, thoughts and prayers". So what exactly is the point of making a thread about this incident? Aside from is value as an ideological argument, advancing a narrative about the police being victims and force being justified?
